Re: PA \"Mini-Round-UP\"????? O.K. Sounds like there's some interest here. Another member PM'ed me needing a firm date to request the day off. How's about Sunday, October 31st?? Reason I suggest this date is that an additional member from out of state will be visiting and this date should suit that schedule. Besides..........any day other than Sunday, during the rut, is kinda a "no-no". Sound cool??

Re: recommendation on a upland small game dog. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] ditto with Aaron, and might i add the Brittany? i had a brit a few years back and she was just as comfortable in the field as she was in the house. a great dog, and they're about the size of a springer. not as durable as the bigger breeds, but they're good setters for sure. [/ QUOTE ] Ah thank you chris forgot tthe brit, i dont have much experiance with them, but i have hunted behind my buddies once on a preserve, pretty good little setter (kinda funny point though ) [/ QUOTE ] yep, funny point, but it's the only spaniel that points, naturally. LMAO............. [/ QUOTE ] I loves them Britts, too..........so I does. I'm not sure about the "funny point" thing, though. I would classify the point of a good Britt to be less "stylish" in the eyes of a purist than say that of a high-tailed setter or a big English or shorthair. But I never had too many roosters tell me my Britt pointed funny. LOL!! I could look past a little "lack of flash" for the virtues of a pile of dead cockbirds. I remember many times when my little girl Britt (with very little pedigree) showed some awfully high-powered setters and pointers (including some of my own) how it was supposed to be done!! A cute story: At one point I was seeking AKC hunter test titles for my Britt. So I would run her at sanctioned tests to accumulate the necessary points. During one test she was running and quartering hard to her left. The wind, which had been from her left, quickly swirled and came from the right. At that moment (still running hard left) she winded a bird set to her right. She slammed into a point with her right paw crossed over her left paw and her head looking right. She was doing her darndest to stay locked and not fall over...........teetering back and forth. The judge and marshal nearly fell off their horses they were laughing so hard. I flushed the bird, the gunner shot it and she stayed upright until I gave the fetch command. If there's one thing I wished I had caught on video but did not........that was it.

Re: Turkey choke/load combo Browning 10 DaHunter........ I shoot a Browning BPS 10 ga. I have not tried the Nitros. I've heard nothing but good about them. They're just a bit rich for my blood. I've found the Winchester Supreme HV chucking 2 oz. of #6 shot is a ferocious load from my BPS. I first used the Browning Invector full choke tube. Then the Browning ported, extended turkey tube. Then 3 different Colonial Arms tube blanks machined to varying constrictions of my specification. Then I got a Comp-N-Choke XXX-Full tube.................. ....................end of my search. The Comp-N-Choke tube, coupled with the Winchester HV's is a horrible thing to do to a turkey. Period. I have taken gobblers at 40 yards that could reasonably pass for being shot at half that distance by looking at the damage to the head/neck. It's one nasty dude. Kicks like a son-of-a................ it's bad. But you should avoid a good bit of that with the Gold.

Here's what I was thinking................ There's several forum members in and around the area of Indiana, PA. I know of another member who should be migrating into the area at the end of the month. Wondered if any of you guys and gals would be interested in hooking up for lunch or dinner??? Somewhere we can eat like pigs and lie like........well.......hunters. There's a couple good grills in town. Seeing as how it'll be smack in the middle of prime hunting time, I thought the last Sunday......the 31st might be good. Indiana is kinda central to Johnstown, Altoona, State College, Pittsburgh, Wheeling and Erie, too. Anybody who can make it would be good-n-welcome. We won't limit this to PA people. Anybody in??

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Last shoot of the year was today. Me & the Mrs. went just for the breakfast. We didn't take bows. She's feeling pretty pregnant, by now and I'm babying a small issue with my right shoulder. I figured it would be a good day to analyze and coach the kids. It's easier to do when I'm not shooting. My boy was not cutting it on the first half, hitting a 75. I think he's having peep troubles. So I started working on his peep alignment and he went on to stick a 102 2nd half. His 177 was still good enough to take handily 1st place in the "Pups" class. My daughter, on the other hand..................... I don't know what she was on, today. But she was smoking something!!!!! Mostly the 10-ring. She stuck a 260!!!! 5 points higher than her previous high mark, set last shoot. She got her first ever trophy.......a 2nd place. She's going to be SERIOUS trouble for the "Cubs" class next year. From what I saw today, I've no doubt she can hit a 300 within the next year if she applies herself.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Well..........last week my wife (who's over 5 months pregnant) handed me my a** on the 3D course. Turns out later, I find my cam was coming apart. So I didn't feel too badly about it. She is a good shooter. But today...........TODAY...........my 11 year old daughter hands me my rump!! This is getting a little outta hand. I mean........be a nice guy. Get the whole family shooting...........and then they do this to you!! Final tally goes: Daughter.... 255 (3rd place Cubs class) Me............. 252 Mrs............ 251 Boy............ 187 (1st place Pups class) Oh am I SO never gonna hear the end of this one!!!!!!!

Re: If you could hunt with a pro? Nuge!!!!!! Any time, anywhere for anything. I wouldn't mind taking Michael Waddell out and showing him how to put the smack-down on a pressured Pennsylvania gobbler, either.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. My shooting was HOT today. My range estimation stunk!! Ended up hitting a 259.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Had a good morning! Me, the boy and daughter hooked up with Buckbuster11 at the local 3D. It was my boy's and Buster's first 3D shoot. Had a real good time. Had a real good breakfast, too. Final tally: Me...276 Buster...236 Daughter...188 (she was having clearance issues with her bib overalls. Boy...175

Re: your shotgun ?? Back when I was running my Britt every available minute of the season, I used a Winchester 1400 12 ga. semi with a 22" VR barrel. It was the decided exception to the rule of " short barreled shotguns don't swing". I could not miss with that gun. Then I lost it in "The Big D". Now I use either a Winchester 1200 pump 12 ga. with a 26" tube or a little Stoeger Uplander Special 20 ga. S/S with 24" tubes.

Re: What do you do While on Stand I sit and I look. I'd sure hate to miss anything.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Went to the "home course" this A.M. Shot about average for me at 267 9X. The Mrs. was struggling with something and shot a 219. My buddy Dave hit a 218 (he's been shooting for a week and a half now) and my daughter (age 10) cleaned house in the "cub" category (ages up to 12) with a 193. It was her first shoot ever.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Me & the Mrs. hit a new (for us) shoot this morning. The course did not feel "comfortable" to either of us. The trails were poorly marked and poorly groomed. Most of the course was through a recently timbered mess. The majority of targets were small Rhineharts. Anyhoo..........I really should have stayed home on the front half. But things picked up on the 2nd half and I shot 11 10's and 4 8's back there. I finished with a "blazing" 255 and the Mrs. a 233. Things have been better. The good news is, after we came back in, there were a couple guys shooting at a Rhinehart bighorn ram from the parking lot. It was 58 yards. So, what the heck.......there was a bank behind it.......I won't lose any arrrows. I gave "Kentucky windage" with my 40 yard pin and shot an 8. So I kept shooting and kept pounding the vitals. It ended up that me and the son of the guy that runs the pro-shop I go to got into a contest to see who could shoot the thing in the eye first. We were shooting 3 arrows each. His dad (the shop guy) left me swap in his stabilizer..........a 14" Archery Horizons Shock Extreme for my 7" Neutralizer. The thing weighed over a pound, but GOOD HEAVENS!!!!!! It made everything pull right in and settle down. I had several 3-shot groups in the 3" range!!!!! That just ain't me!! Between the two of us we were putting 90% of our arrows on that ram's head (it was pretty windy and them stabilizers are like a ship's sail in the wind). What a blast we had. Probably shot 100 arrows apiece at the eye. Neither of us hit it. I mean.......we were within 1/32", 1/16", 1/8".......you couldn't put a half a ram's eye anywhere else on the things head without it having 3 holes in it. But we just could not squarely hit the dumb thing. Tell ya what, though.............I'm gonna have me a 50 and 60 yard pin and a better stabilizer real soon!!

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Me and the Mrs. shot a 3D yesterday (her first in almost a year). I started like a house on fire. I 12'ed the first 6 targets (this club scores 10,8,5,0 though). Then I had a wonderful event of "operator error" which caused me to miss my first target ever. Guess it had to happen sometime. Anyhow.........we finished up at 267 for me (291 if 12's counted) and 257 for the Mrs. (267 with 12's). All in all, I was very happy with the way I was shooting. Jus hard to pull yourself up after a zero and I 5'ed a darn 16 yarder from a goofy position. The Mrs. was smokin' for not having flung arrow one since last October.

what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.
Strut10 replied to Modillo's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag. It's a very popular round. I'll give it that. I just always considered it to be a poor choice. If you're going to burn all that powder and take that recoil...........buy a .300 Mag and have a genuine "big gun". If you want a flat shooting deer rifle...........then buy a .270 or .280 or 30-06 and save the noise, recoil and ammo $$. -
Guns you each use for coyote hunting ?

Re: Guns you each use for coyote hunting ? Ruger 77V .220 Swift Browning BPS 10ga. with coarse shot -
Re: Ohio To Set Bounty on Coyote? Heck.........even if it was 10 bucks it would help put more pressure on the rotten things. You's probably be able to sell the pelt as well. Years ago, in PA there was a bounty on fox. You took the hides somewhere to collect the bounty and they paid you and they split the nose of the pelt with a knife so you couldn't try to double-dip on the bounty money with the same fox. But the split nose did not affect the pelt quality, so you could still sell them.

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. The Hackmaster was back at 'er again this morning. Shot a 3-D close the house here. 30 degrees and 20 - 30 mph winds don't stop this idiot from flinging carbon. After 5-ing 3 targets on the first half, I yanked up my muddy bootstraps and hit 11 10's on the back 15. Ended up with a lukewarm 262 overall. I'll take it, I guess. Forgot to take gloves. I couldn't feel the trigger on about the last 8 targets!!

Re: Post your 2004 scores here. Second 3-D of the year. I'm still a 1st rate hacker. But I'm working on it. Shot a (career best) 273 8X including a couple BONEHEADED 8's on an elk and a couple others that shoulda been "gimme's" And as for them there Rock Rascals.......... Oh, well. Had a ball. Can't wait for next Sunday!!
