Re: Hamsters In 2003, I took my son deer hunting. He had not shot a deer and if he got one it would be his first. My son's class wanted a hamster and since he already had one, the teacher asked us to purchase one for the class which we did. My son was attached to it so the teacher asked us to care for it over the holidays. Sunday morning, my son (9 years old) got his first deer, a 3-point. My brother-in-law was taking us to the processor in his truck. We were on cloud nine. Then we got a frantic call on the cell and it was my wife telling us to come home asap. The class hamster had escaped from its cage and she could not find it. We dropped off the deer and ended my.. er..our hunt early and made the 2 hour trip back. I could not find the critter either and my son was no longer on cloud nine. We bought a new ra...er...hamster for the class which we inherited at the end of the year. Rats...

Re: Antelope Hunt Auction for Norm Sauceman If I may interupt the bidding for a moment... I really have been reluctant to post on this subject for fear of appearing opportunistic. I sometimes am annoyed when people join a forum, and their first post is to plug their organization, but after discussing this with Scott and at his request, I am going to suggest an idea. First, I would like to praise Scott and Steve for this awesome hunt for Norm. Like many of you, I cannot make a bid even though I dream of being able to go on a hunt like this and knowing that my contribution helped another. I’ll keep dreaming. But … there is already something in place where those that want to help Norm can if everyone is willing. This situation is what Hunters Helping Hunters is all about! Hunters taking care of their own. I guess many of the forum members are not clear that HHH, Inc. was set up to offset medical costs so people would not have to sell possessions or give up time in the field because they can no longer afford it. It started with the members of the NAHC forum, who would post about having to drop out as their wife had cancer and the bills were pilling up or they did not have money to buy a headstone after losing a child. Just like this forum, the NAHC forum members rallied to help them by posting a “tin cup” thread and sent money to a particular member who would post a running tally (check number and amount only) and forward the money to the recipient after a certain amount of time had passed. We decided to make this idea open to all hunters by organizing a non-profit corporation thereby making the contribution tax deductible. Here’s the deal. Potential recipients have to request through an application process and there has to be a steady stream of funds incoming to have enough funds to pay the medical bills and/or funeral costs. We do not send funds to the recipients, rather pay the creditor directly. Often, we can negotiate with the creditor to reduce the amount owed if we pay within a certain amount of time thereby saving precious donated dollars for future requests. Everything is confidential so no one has to even know that the recipient received assistance from HHH, Inc., but in this case, we know Norm’s situation. HHH, Inc is ready and willing. If this is not the avenue for assisting Norm, that is ok. You RT forum members are keeping up the image of hunters being generous which makes me proud to be involved with RT. I just did not want to appear opportunistic. I also did not want to miss an opportunity because of a lack of awareness of what is already in place to help each other. So, I offer the assistance of HHH, Inc. (if Norm is willing) and trust the RT forum members will come through for Norm (or for any RT forum member) no matter what avenue of assistance is utilized. Please excuse the interruption in the bidding and God bless each one of you for caring so much. Thank you

Re: Show yourself! Here is me, my son, his 2nd deer and his cousin. I haven't shot a deer in 2 year...I'm not complaining! "...but here is me and the ex-wife"... J.B. that's too funny.

Re: KIDS HUNT OF A LIFE TIME, ENTERIES Hey everyone, Here is a heart warming story of one of last years youth winner rewritten by Marshall MacFairlane. Please note that Hunters Helping Kids has become an independent organization separate from QDMA since this article was written. CONGRATULATIONS to Hunters Helping Kids!! Hunters Helping Hunters Inc. Board Member Assists Another Great Charity Hunters Helping Hunters Inc. Board Member Dick Worden not only makes a difference in the lives of the recipients of HHH’s assistance, but he also pitched in to make a difference in the lives of several youths through his involvement with “Kids’ Hunt of a Lifetime” - an event put together by the South Piedmont Branch of QDMA.. Once asked to assist, Dick was very active in recruiting applicants by placing posters in several local sporting goods shops, placing notices on several hunting-related Message Boards, and also e-mailing several announcements to his contacts across the country. These efforts resulted in mailing out 345 applications for entry to the event - a deer hunt on the Fork Farm in Albemarle, NC scheduled for November 12th through the 14th. In the end, there were six youths selected, and Dick’s efforts helped produce three of those youngsters! One hailed from Utah, one was from Pennsylvania, and one came from New York. This year, four more entries sponsored by other groups were also selected to attend the event, resulting in a total of 10 youths having the opportunity to participate. This is a super event, and is the culmination of a ton of effort, heart, and coordination, on the part of the South Piedmont Quality Deer Management Association members. The Fork Farm provided use of their 1200 acre facility for the event. Each participating family was provided a hotel room by the South Piedmont Branch of QDMA. In addition, the SPQDMA crew helped prepare all of the meals. They provided guides, as well as transportation to and from the hotel. Each kid received a Model 710 Savage rifle including scope, a complete camo outfit, and back pack loaded with hunting accessories! On Friday, each of the kids was taken to a range for target practice, and to get familiar with handling their new rifle. On Saturday, each youth was provided a guide and placed in a stand with the intent of harvesting a mature doe - as the Fork Farm practices QDMA. Kids also received archery lessons and a tour of the farm with photo sessions of the entire group. Of the ten youths in attendance, eight of the youths were successful in harvesting a doe - two of which were successful in both the morning and evening hunts! There was an evening banquet that included a fine meal followed by a duck-carving demonstration. Essays submitted by each youth on “The most influential person in their life” were judged, with a plaque being awarded to the young lady from New York. This young lady happened to be one of the kids that Dick sponsored! As if that was not enough, a surprise was in store for all 10 youths…. Each youth was asked to select an unmarked envelope on the table at the banquet. Tucked inside each envelope was a bonus hunt! Donated were: a turkey hunt in South Alabama, a bear/deer hunt in Michigan, a swan hunt in North Carolina, a deer hunt in Texas, a duck hunt in Louisiana, a deer hunt in Mississippi, deer hunt in South Carolina, a duck hunt in Arkansas, a deer hunt in North Carolina mountains and a deer hunt in Kentucky. Drawings for a Savage 710 in 25-06 and a new bow topped of the exciting evening. Dick added a personal touch to the experiences of one of the winners. The young lady from New York lives only 10 miles from Dick. Since Dick was to take part in the event as a sponsor, and would be making the trip from New York to North Carolina anyway - Dick loaded up the family in his motor home and provided transportation to North Carolina. On the weekend prior to the big event, Dick and HHH Inc. member Robert Jones took the young lady from New York hunting on her birthday. She took her first deer, a five-point buck! Dick could not find his own words to express the 14 year-old girl’s joy and excitement, but to quote her own exclamation - “This is way cool!” Followed of course, by lots of hugs and kisses…. Have you ever seen an old man blush?

Re: Very very personal... I gross about $35,200K a year. My wife makes about $10k a year P/T but does not work in the summer so does not get paid during those months so things are kind of thin right now. We are going camping (IN THIS HEAT!) this coming week because we can't afford a couple of days in a hotel and other "fun" stuff. I also lost my butt trying to sell life insurance about 7 years ago and am still smarting from that decision. As for spending money on hunting, I was fortunate to hunt on my Dad's lease for 15 years until about 2 years ago so my costs were minimal compared to what other people pay to hunt around here. I know someone who is paying over $1000 just for a spot on a lease. Since we lost our lease, I can't afford another place so I am dependent on the generosity of others and usually defer the hunting opportunity to my son if possible. But I could easily spend a couple a grand per year if I had the opportunity. My wife and I have really learned to be content with what we have so if I had an increase in salary, I probably could arrange to set aside money for a spot on a good lease me and my son both have an opportunity to take deer. I think everyone has their "hobby" in which they spend more money and time than they should but enjoy the distraction from the world...be it fishing, computers, electronic gadets, music, cars, etc. Sometimes the "gadets" are sold more to catch fishermen (or hunters) than to catch the fish (or insert game animal).

Re: Time for you to act again. ** HUNTER ALERT ** Hey Silvertip, Ron has been in contact with me and I referred him to DHNA as his request does not fall within our assistance guidelines. I really appreciate you referring Ron to us. HHH mainly assists with financial assistance to offset medical and funeral costs so hunters can get back in the field. DHNA expertise is to assist hunters with disabilities find resources to enable them to overcome obstacles that may prevent then from enjoying hunting in the great outdoors. Thanks again for the referral!!! -
Re: Michael\'s 2nd deer Hey Kirk, Good to hear from you.

Re: Michael\'s 2nd deer Michael says thanks for the congrats! Zombie, Who you used to be? you remember that picture? I didn't think I had posted that picture on this BB. He has come a long way from that picture. 6sixpoint, The deer or my son? I am not sure what the deer weighed, but I would say around 70-80 pounds dressed. It was the last weekend of the season, we lost our lease the year before and was invited to this one and he missed an opportunity to get a shot on a good 6point the night before so I let him take this young one. Tastes real good though. I am trying to get Michael to post but he is shy and does not know what to say. Maybe soon.
