No, I didn't use the arrows specifically made for them. I used an uncut arrow, so the guillotine cleared my sight. Maybe I'll try them. Thanks. --rossman

thanks!!

If the guillotines flew good I would. But I tried them and after 10 to 15 yards they suck!!!! Rather have a good flying arrow that doesn't planer out after 15 yards!!!! This will lead to a greater chance of wounding a bird. If the arrow planes out and drops, it will hit low in the body and wound the bird. I would rather use a wide cut mechanical with a 2 inche cutting diameter. Just my two cents!!! But anyway, thanks for the help.--rossman

Does anyone know where I could find a turkey killzone diagram for Turkeys? Going to hunt with a bow this year but want to confirm where to shoot them. Any websites that offer them, especially if I could print them out to shoot? Thanks dude!!!--rossman

We will be aquiring some land in the next month and I want to put in a large food plot. What would you recommend putting in to give the bucks the best nutrients fo their antlers. There is alot of deer in the area so I don't really need an attractant. But I would like to use some type of attractant for the fall, maybe turnips or a brassica. So, what is the best plot to give the bucks the biggest growing potential? thanks--rossman

Re: Groundblind users I used one for the first time this year. We had a mature buck crossing the top pasture of the hill we hunt. There were no trees to hang a stand so we poped up a blind. But I think it did spook the deer, even after I conceled it in the fence line with weeds and corn stalks. If we put it up earlier, like a month before the season then I believe the deer would have gotten used to it by the bow opener. So, I think ground blinds can be effective but it has to be put up mid summer so the deer can get used to it and so the scent can dissipate. --rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! I don't think it is prejudice to believe it is unethical to hunt inside a fence. In any group there are subgroups and each subgroup does things and thinks differently. When hunting inside a fence there are too many advantages given to man and disadvantages given to the animals. Yeah, a deer could keep circling the hunter but with enough time, that hunter will kill the deer because that deer cannot use his flight response. Now, hunt the same deer without a fence. That deer may not be killed. If your a good enough hunter maybe the deer could be killed. But that deer has the opportunity to live. Fences, help the not so good hunters kill trophy animals. If you or I are not good hunters then we should have less of a chance to kill a trophy animal. Only the good hunters should be able to have a better chance at killing a trophy animal. That's what makes them good. We should try and preserve the trophy status of the animals we kill. If every dude that hunts kills a trophy animal, then there will be no trophy quality anymore. The trophy quality animal will just be that average animal that is killed. And fences will not help!!!!!! --rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] According to P&Y, none of the deer I shot in my first 10 years of bowhunting were fairchase, because I was using a 70# bow. I'm not going to let these clubs dictate to me what is fair, or ethical. [ QUOTE ] kill something from an erected blind inside a darn fence!!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Are you against blinds and treestands too?? I mean, after all, fence or no fence, when using a blind or treestand, the game comes to you, you don't go to them. [/ QUOTE ] You know what I mean!!! If you want me to lay it out "elementarily" for you I will. Bottom line, it is a shame to kill any game animal inside a fence. I don't really know what to say. Now we heven have the moderators changin the subject and making excuses for high fence hunts. It is really a shame!!!!!!!! I guess I'm through!!!!!--Rossman [/ QUOTE ] The moderators and other people are coming up with some very good arguements and obviously you can't give an answer. You keep saying the same thing over and over again and its not really proving your point. I noticed you only pick out things that you can actually say something about off the top of your head. What about the whole point that Buckee brought up about the animals that cannot be let to roam free through North America? Why can't you answer the question about the size of the land? You keep saying "it is a shame to kill any game animal inside a fence", but you are not looking at the type of situtations with high fence hunting in any other way than that is absolutley wrong. [/ QUOTE ] I've answered the question about the size of the land!!! I do not think it is ethical to kill an animal inside an encloseure, no matter what size. That's just me. As for the iosland comment? Last time I checked Deer can swim. Or am I wrong? Water is a natural barrier, a fence is not, of course.... I'm not done. Don't Fret!!!! You'll here more of my genius ideas --rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] I've pursued a world class mule deer (or elk, or whatever) across a mountain all day. I finally catch up to it with 2 minutes of legal shooting time left. The mule deer jumps into a lake and starts to swim across. My only option is to shoot the deer as it's swimming. Guess what - that buck is not eligable for entry into the books because it wasn't "fair chase". Even though I've tracked it across 3 miles of mountainside and 3000 feet of elevation change. Or how about this. I track a monster elk for miles, then finally catch up to him just before dark. He's on the other side of a canyon and struggling through deep snow. If I shoot him in the snow, he's not eligable for the books either. [/ QUOTE ] So, what's wrong with not shooting a muley if it is in the water. He got away, that's the great thing about fair chase!!!! If you were in a fence, that deer would be dead. Looks like you just proved my point!!!! I guess they were OK examples. Do you think you should kill an animal everytime out? I've hunted elk upwards around 13,000 feet and failed. Am I upset that I didn't get anything? Heck no!!! I would rather get nothing while hunting with bloody feet in the wilderness with archery tackle than kill something from an erected blind inside a darn fence!!!!!! But that's me!!!!--rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] Don't get me started on B&C or P&Y standards for "fair chase". Those are the most convoluted set of rules ever thought up. [/ QUOTE ] What's your issue with it? I don't understand? Is it because you can not enter any animal if it is killed inside an enclosure? Please explain!!!!--rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] Most places that many Bulls in one arrea wouldn't have the chance to get that big if they were in the Wild. How many years old are each of those Bulls 4 - 7 ??? Maybe older ? [/ QUOTE ] So, what's your point? There are some old bulls in the wilderness that die from old age before anyone even sees em. But, not many hunters want to put in the work to try and pack in a camp, find one, try and kill it then pack it out. The average hunter hunts less than 500 yards off the road. How it should be is the smarter, hard working hunter should kill better animals because he earned it. Now, you have a "killer" not a hunter that hunts behind a fence and kills a 360 bull. It's just not right!!!!!!!!!!! --rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] Question If these elk are standing on the other side of the fence, looking into the fenced in area, is it ethical and fair chase to shoot them? Be honest now I have a very good reason for asking this, which I'll explain later [/ QUOTE ] As long as I'm not filming the hunt!!! Seriously, for me, I would shoot, because the animal is not confined inside an enclosure. There are many ways to look at it, but what we are discussing is a full fenced in enclosure which the animals can not escape. Plus, under the pope and young and/or boone and crocket any animal shot inside an enclosure will not constutute fair chase and can not be entered. --rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! How could anyone call this hunting? It just makes me sick!!!! It's just plain old killing!!!! Not hunting.... What I would like to know? Is, where the heck is the skill? I don't care if it's a 20acre or 1000 acre enclosure, it's not hunting!!!!! --rossman

I have a Matthews Outback that is in near perfect condition, I bought it the first year it came out and only used it for one season. It has a vital bow gear "3pin sight", a whisker Biskit rest, and a brand new Baracudda string. 29.5" draw length and a 60-70lbs draw weight. I've kept it for a backup bow, and have a guy who wants to buy it. How much do you guys think it's worth? Thanks--rossman

Re: Appropriate High Fence Thread!!!! [ QUOTE ] Rossman, you brought our pm out in the open, so I will just save time and reply to you here. As long as this remains civil, I see no reason for it not to remain. Just remember, you can not force your views on everyone and I imagine not everyone will have the same view as you, so don't get to upset if you get opinions that don't agree with you. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not upset at all. I know some of the things I write come across as arrogant and/or being upset. That's the problem with writing it, you can't show true feeling. I respect everyones opinion and will never expect to force my views onto others. I'm glad we were able to disceuss this civily. Now, to me any fence that prohibits animals to escape or flee from a hunter is high fence. And to me it is not appropriate to hunt in. In NY, there are 150 acre Elk farm enclosures that people can pay to kill an elk. After hunting big mountains out west, I believe it is a darn shame to put an elk in this situation. It is immoral and unethical. An elk is a magnificent animal that runs miles after being spooked. But in an enclosure, the elk runs into a fence? It's just not right. Other animals like mule deer, rams and goats fall into the same catagory. It's not fair is wrong, "to me". I do get upset hearing that these types of hunts still go on. Were supposed to be hunters. And being a hunter should mean preserving the rights and integrity of the animals we hunt. That means giving them "fair chase" options to get away and live. Hunting is not just killing an animal, it's about respecting the animals we hunt. And giving the animal a chance to get away. Hunting would not be fun or enjoyable if I killed an animal everytime out. Thanks for your comments, and I do respect everyones opinion. This is just mine!!!! --rossman

THe following is a PM I sent to "Texastrophies" after my post had been deleted. Buckee told me to discuss it n an appropriate thread so here it is. I would assume this will not be deleted because it is appropriate!!!! I would like to know all of your thoughts on this topic? Thanks--rossman!!! Here is the PM---- (Start) That's fine and I understand. But, it's weak to use the "if it's legal then it's OK" approach. The law does not dictate morals/ethics, especially in hunting. ANd this approach should not be used. It's basically saying, for example, that if ur in, a state like nevada and prostitution is legal then you support it? Or if you in a radical mideast country that degrades women then you would support it? I'm not saying you do, because I will not put words in your mouth, it would be disrespectful to say the least. ANd I'm sure you don't. Just an example. Laws should not dictate hunting morals or ethics. Especially high fenced crap. It is un-ethical and immoral and I believe Real Tree should not touch it with a finger. There have been many times where Real Tree has supported High Fenced hunting and even had a cover story on Realtree.com advertising for "Pecos Bar-X-Bar Ranch. Which is a high fenced encloseure Elk hunting operation. I sent a PM to the person in charge nad they did take it off. But the damage was done. I think Real Tree and yourself should be more careful in how you deal with High Fence crap. It makes Rea Tree look "Real Bad" they support it in any way, shape or form. Now, I'm done with this topic and will not bash anyone else who posts it. Just be careful in how you deal with these situations!!! Thanks for listening--rossman (END)

Re: Injured deer what to do? [ QUOTE ] Leave it alone. Who are you to play God? And I don't mean this to be demeaning at all. Let nature take its course. If a coydog or two were to get a few meals from this injured deer it might just save the life of a healthy deer. [/ QUOTE ] We as hunters play god every day!!!!! Do what you want. Sometimes calling the DNR causes more harm than good. Sometimes they suck and are incompetant!!! --rossman
