Re: Killed another. 8 point!! [ QUOTE ] Congratulations!! Great deer Jeff! That wasn't 9 Mile Swamp where you got that deer was it? [/ QUOTE ] Thanks!!!! Yep, the west side of the nine mile. the east side of mason rd.. In the past we haven't seen many hunters but now were starting to see more, and they do not seem to be ethical or very smart. Archery season is great, barely any bowhunters, but the past two years during the opening weeked, it gets crazy. Not my kind of hunting. I like to practice the "one shot one kill" mentality. I know it does not always work out that way, but I try.. --rossman

THis past saturday was our southern tier opening day for rifle. To make a long story short!!! I sat in our ground blind at the edge of our field. At about 9:30 a.m. I spotted a doe running up the hill being followed by a decent 8 point. Both deer were on the neighbors property and ended up about 90 yards away from another hunter, I knoew was there. So I got my binos up and waited for this guy to kill this deer. He shot once with his 30-06 rem. and missed at about 90 yards. shot again and hit the deer high. The deer ran up towards the road and houses that were about 400 yards away from this hunter. The hunter was out of his blibd and unloading on this deer. Shooting staight towards the road and the houses. I'm thinking, "this idiot going to kill someone". Then the deer turned away from the road and towards me, but still on their property. The idiot reloaded and fired 2 more shots in my direction. Now I'm thinking" this guys going to kill me"!!! The deer got away and ran down towards me, I waited till he was about 70 yards out and shot him on the neck. The deer is now dead. I probably would not have shot this deer due to his small body size and good horn genetics but he was wounded from being unloaded on. It was more like a mercy kill but I am still gratefull. Due to the seriousness of the situation, I only took one photo with my camera phone and got the heck out of there!!!!! I will follow up with more of the story later, got to get some work done!!!! --rossman

Re: help with sights.. I got the G5 5 pin sight, and my pins are set at 25, 40, 50 and 60. It's set up for western yardages. I don't even use the fifth pin. I really like my sight, it's very durable. I heard great things about spot hogg!!!! --rossman

Re: Scent free suits? I have 2 pair, but that was before I turned smart!!!!! It's all bullcrap!!!! The only reason they may help is because when people buy a carbon suit they do all of the other necessary things to controll their scent like, shower in scent free soap, wash their clothes in scent free detergent, use a scent bag to transport their clothing, and use cover scents. The experts say that it takes over 1000 degrees to reactivate carbon. Last time I checked, my dryer doesn't go that high!!!! This is the biggest rip off in the world. I was a sucker but not anymore. I see just as many deer with or without it!!!! --ROSSMAN

Re: Will he score 100 inchs If he's only a six point then no Do you have a side shot. It's hard to tell from a forward shot. Looks like he has four points on his right antler and two on his left. Too many deductions. But it is a good deer, score doesn't mean crap!!! of he is a trophy to you then that's all that matters!!!!! --rossman

Re: Rut Question On state land, everyone and their mother uses scents so, I think the deer get accustomed to it and will get nervous. I personally think that the majority scents on the market are a ripoff anyway. Did the old time hunters like Fred Bear use any scents? Don't think so!!!! I think the only scent worth buying is racoon pee or fox pee to use as a cover scent.... And whenever someone says that they killed a buck because it came into a scent bomb, 9 time out of 10 that buck would have come in anyway!!!!! If you use scents everytime you go out then every deer you kill will be because of the scent. I just use earth scent cover scent and fox or racoon pee to over my tracks... --roossman

Re: Smoked Checked a 10 point!!! Havn't put tape to him yet. I will now and get back to you. When I shot him I knew it was a lethal hit but wasn't too sure how lethal. So, I waited for it to get dark and snuck out of there like a ninja. went home and grabbed a bite to eat and checked the weather. The weather said, "80% chance of precipitation of rain and snow". After I saw that I knew we couldn't wait til morning, because the blood may wash away, and knew it would be a long night. We gave him about 3.5 hours to die and went after him. I was crawling through the merky freezing water on my hands and knees. soaked from head to toe and shivering. I thought I was in the Navy Seal training program!!!! But, we recovered him. Then to top it all off, we got the 4 wheeler stuck in the mud and hung up on stumps for about 30 minutes trying to get it back to the deer. But it was worth every second of it, I love this crap!!!! Also, I think this buck is a good example why managing does are important. We have a terrible doe to buck ratio, I would guess about 20:1 or even maybe 25:1 does to bucks. This deer was very heavy and his horns seem like they should have been bigger for his body size. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great buck, and am really pumped to have the opportunity. But if there wasn't such competition for food, I believe he would have had bigger horns, especially in his mass measurements and tine length. The problem is, the farmers refuse to shoot does, they look at them like their friends. They only shoot bucks and they shoot every buck they see. But it's their land and we all know how hard farmers work so maybe they can do whatever they want. But anyway, now it's time to take some does and do my part to manage the herd. Thanks again!!!--rossman

Never seen one like that at my hunting land!!!! --rossman [/ QUOTE ] Rossman, it was taken in Ellicottville, in Cattaraugus county. No where near montezuma, heck I don't even know where that is. Wigs [/ QUOTE ] The montezuma refuge is in western NY between syracuse and rochester. You drive through it on the thruway. You can see the marsh fromn the road.
