Well, it finally happened! Only took seven years!!!
Got to our hunting area about an hour before sunrise. Dad got settled in his blind, I stayed out along the ridge top. As daylight got stronger the woods came alive with the sounds of gobbles! Not knowing which way to turn I waited a bit and just called every now and then and listened to all the gobbling! I caught a glimpse of a few hunters making their way below me, then some got too close for my liking, time to move.
By now its about 7:30AM, I radio to dad to check in with him. I start heading his way stopping every now and then to call. I get a response! Hoping that I might get my father in between me and the gobbler, but I really don't know where about my dad is! By now, I am crawling on the ground trying to get this bird to commit to us, I hear dad calling now. But afraid to move anymore without bumping this bird! I sit. Every time I call, he gobbles! I purr, he gobbles! I cluck, he gobbles! Finally I shut up, realizing that this bird is not moving any closer to us! It works! But he moved up closer to me! Now I see him walking about below me, strutting like crazy, but out of range for me and my dad! Not sure what this bird was going to do, I purred a few more times, he never gobbled, but started walking towards me.
At 35-40 yards, I dropped the hammer. Aimed my 835 right where I know the Comp-N-Choke XXX Full and Winchester Supreme #6's will hit! He drops flat to the ground! Then a little bit of Eddie Salter flies out of my mouth in one of his calls he makes after shooting a turkey! LOL!!! 17 pounds 3 ounces, 3/4" spurs on both sides, 9 7/8" beard.
