First I'm sorry I didn't follow up on this after my initial comment. I simply forgot about it.
I understand how people can loyal to a breed but I often question owners why they have pit bulls. And when I ask them, 8 out of 10 times is its a status symbol. Few people get them for what they were actually bred for.
Now you take a breed that is popular for making people "look tough" and it becomes popular like it did 10 years ago. Every mom and pop trailer park hick are going to the ASPCA and getting cheap unmanageable pits for $50. Now they are suddenly pit bull breeders for extra cigarette and beer money. Figure in that rarely does Jon Q. Redneck want to pay for a quality AKC pit breeder so they truck off to the trailer park. Demand for cheap dogs is good and then the inbreeding takes place and the gene pool gets sckewed with dogs that people cannot handle. Strange how most of the dogs at the shelter are pits...funny how that is
I have always been a strong proponent of "no bad dogs just bad owners" but when you have a bad gene pool like what has happened to pits over the years and that tips the the scale the other way.
I have two neighbors with pits and I laugh when they call them babies.
Neighbor #1 left the house for a while with his two pits in the house. Comes home and finds a scene from Helter Skelter. Blood EVERYWHERE. Come to find out, the dogs got into the garbage then started to fight over it. One pit tears the ear off the other creating a bloodbath in the house. They fought in 3 different rooms and cost the owner thousands in vet bills with one having to be put down. Funny, never hear about labs doing something like this.
Neighbor #2 has 3 pits. I go riding past the house on my bike after taking the kids to vacation bible school. The come tearing out of the yard barking and snapping. I hit the afterburners and they gave up. Now I'm worried about my kids on their bikes. I tell the owner about the dogs. "oh don't worry, they are big babies" Yeah maybe for you. Pit bull owners forget to realize that the dog will act differently for them and not for others. Now I have to pack a pistol whenever I ride past the house.
I'm going to wind this down. The breed itself was bred for one thing, guard dog/fighting. And you take a breed like that and skew the gene pool like what has happened over the last 10 years or so and you will be hard pressed to find a pit that isn't a little nuts.
