Next stop for live hunt....Kansas! starts now
SE_KSBowhunter replied to Tim Andrus's topic in The Realtree Pro Staff Room
The 20-30 mph winds have made the hunting and deer movement difficult, but hopefully with what they witnessed last night the cruising is really kicking in. We've been getting pics of a buck pushing the 160 mark at the stand we call Horseshoe Bend where the river bend makes a horseshoe shape and there is a bean field inside it. He has showed up the past few afternoon/evenings, some in daylight and some right after dark. They are going to try putting the decoy out in the field and hitting the horns to bring him out, they should have a perfect wind for the situation. As often as he has been showing up he has to be bedding close. There are a couple other decent bucks showing up there off and on so lets hope it happens! -

Tim and Rodney made it to the farm. They are getting their gear together and checking one of the cameras. They should be heading to the stand soon so hopefully Ben will be able to keep everyone updated as he has in the past. -

Unfortunately not until this Saturday... I have to work the rest of this week, it's going to drive me crazy! If everything goes well Tim should have a tag on one by then! I am off all week next week to take turns filming and hunting with Rodney once Tim is done. I've managed to stay out of the stand until they get here, but it hasn't been easy! -

Just got off the phone with Rodney. All their gear showed up and they had just got in the rental headed south. They have about a 2-1/2 hour drive to get down to the farm so they will have plenty of time to get in the stand for this evening's hunt. Those pics of the deer are from one stand location where they are hunting tonight, same stand I stuck a 156" last year the week after Tim and Rodney left. -

Savanna Scent Lok??? And here I was thinking that the success in Montana was due to the awesome guy behind the camera... lol Good luck to you and Rodney, will be seing you guys when you get here November 2nd... and hopefully with cooler weather than what we have had the past couple of years. -
One more thing!! on the Montana hunt
SE_KSBowhunter replied to Tim Andrus's topic in The Realtree Pro Staff Room
Had a great time! We had a lot of hard work and a little frustration but it was all worth it in the end. Thanks for letting me tag along. Less than 3 weeks and you will be here on the Neosho River... doesn't sound quite as famous as the Milk River huh? lol See you soon Clint -
I bought my son a Bear Apprentice a few weeks ago, he is 9 as well and pulling 25 lbs. The draw length is adjustable from 15 to 27 inches and 20 to 50 pounds, does not need a bow press to adjust length. Only have to change a set screw in each cam. Comes with sights, whisker biscuit and quiver, quality youth bow and retails around $270.

Thanks Ben! You did an awesome job posting for the hunt... I think you were just as excited as if you were with us in the tree! lol Clint

The wind kind of depends on what the weather is doing. If it is still warm, the wind will typically be from the south to southwest. If it is colder by then, it will typically be from the north to northwest. I only hunt with a bow, your chances of seeing a mature buck are far greater during bow season in my opinion, you just have to get him in range. Our rifle season doesn't open until the first week in December so most of the heavy rutting activity is over by then. The first two to three weeks in November is when I have had the best luck on our farm.
-
Rhino is right, definately a lot of big mature deer in the area. There are a lot of crops in the area scattered with small wood lots and tree lines. Key in on the river bottoms if you have any in your lease. And yes, leave your climbers at home! The weather is pretty unpredictable that time of year, we have hunted during November with 80 degree temps but also had it in the 20's and snowing, seems to change almost instantly from one day to the next. Our ground is in Neosho County, just east of where you will be. Tim has hunted here with me the past few years and is coming back this November.
-
They are the "drainage areas" or ravines that the deer like to use. They also bed down in them to get shade depending on what the rest of the topography in the area is like.
-
Where at in units 11 and 12 will you be hunting exactly? There's several small areas of public hunting. A lot of the public areas around where I am in Neosho county don't seem to get much hunting pressure. The deer will probably still be following their feeding patterns mid October with some of the smaller bucks starting to venture out. If you want I can send you a public hunting area map if you don't already have one. PM me your address, or send me a message on Facebook, we are already friends on there. Keep in touch and I will help any way I can. Clint Womeldorff

Im not from the northwestern part of the state where Norton is located, but from what I know it is mostly open country so a blind would be a huge asset. I have a good friend from there, lots of big bucks around including mulies. Your best bet for getting a good buck is when he is using tree lines and coolies, cruising for does and hitting the food source. You might be able to use a stand in those areas but sometimes finding a good tree is difficult. November is a good time to be here, the rut is just starting usually around that time. As far as the weather goes, its anybody's guess. The past two years that Tim has been here it has been hot during the first week of November. But that can always change almost instantly. Oh, and be ready to deal with wind! One issue you might have is having lots of pheasant hunters walking the fields, I think our pheasant season starts the first weekend, just depends on the area you are hunting out there. If you have an open camo pattern like Max 1 would be best, but a regular pattern should work. Hopefully my rambling helped you a little and welcome to the forums!

Tim's luck with flying is making me nervous... sorry Tim but when we go to Montana, I think I'm going to take a different flight from Denver! lol Sorry buddy, couldn't resist.

Would a ground blind be good for turkey hunting?
SE_KSBowhunter replied to desideriascott's topic in Turkey Hunting
Just like Goinghuntin said, they are extremely helpful with concealment, especially if you are hunting with a bow. I prefer to use Ameristep's hub style blinds. The Brickhouse or they have a new one called the Tom Taker blind, they are reasonably priced and easy to set up/take down. Good luck! -
I use the hub-style blinds from Ameristep. They are easy set-up/take-down and are reasonably priced. I have the Brickhouse, Bone Collector and Intimidator and all 3 work great. We usually have a cameraman in the blind too and there is plenty of room to draw your bow. The Brickhouse and Bone Collector are both under $200 at Cabelas and Bass Pro.

I am heading to Georgia for the turkey season opener to do some filming with Rodney and thought if the guys tag out early I might do a little hunting myself. Does anyone have any info on non-resident regulations and prices? I went to the Georgia DNR website but was getting frustrated so I thought this would be the next best place to check. Thanks for everyone's help!

Has anyone used the G5 Expert rests? I have been looking into them but was just wanting some opinions from people that have used them good and bad.

Looking for a place to go for a rio in kansas?
SE_KSBowhunter replied to jesse8953's topic in Turkey Hunting
The south central part of the state would probably be your best location. The eastern 1/3 of the state is mostly Easterns and the Rios are further to the west. There are even some hybrids of the two species here. I have only hunted the southeast part of the state for turkey so I don't have much knowledge of where good locations are for hunting the south central part. The terrain is quite a bit different from here to there. -
Glad you made it back home safe and sound. We've had some snow here the past couple of days again but nothing like what was out there! Talk to you soon...

It wouldn't hut to put in for a preferance point in 2010 just to help your chances but I don't think you should have any problem getting a tag the way the regs are now. They seem to change them often though so who knows how it will be then. I don't know the Topeka area very well as far as the hunting goes but I know there are several good deer taken in the Northwest/Northcentral part of the state. Let me know if you need more info and I will do what I can to help, it's good that you are wanting to do this with your dad. Better late than never while you have the chance. Good luck!

Thanks everybody! No word on my gear yet... probably have to chalk that one up to an expensive lesson learned. Just another hurdle in life! lol Actually, my stuff getting stolen is a lot smaller problem than what some of the other fellow forum members are having to go through. Loss of life and loved ones are irreplaceable. We are going to make it happen next year Tim! Looking forward to it, you are past due for a Kansas bruiser for sure... I think that Rodney is due too!

It finally happened... the deer that Tim, Rodney and I were after has taken the road to glory this past Friday evening, November 27! We have a little history with this buck, with me seeing him in full velvet in August for the first time and multiple trail camera pictures of him in the following months to come. Rodney affectionately named him "High Right" and he was immediately inducted to our "hit list." Upon arriving in Kansas, this was the first stand set that Tim and Rodney headed to for the first evening hunt, hoping to catch at least a glimpse of him but with no luck. Rodney and I had also hung a new set closer to where we thought High Right had been coming from, hoping to get a shot at him, Rodney wanted to put an arrow in him so bad he could taste it! It seemed that he had all but disappeared until this past week. He showed up for three days straight, all during the evening hours. For those of you that read Tim's post, remember that my bow and computer were stolen from my truck about a week and a half ago. The great guy that Rodney is, he let me borrow his bow. I hunted him on Thanksgiving evening, but he never showed and I was determined to keep hunting this area as long as the wind was right. Finally, everything came together Friday evening. There was a small buck that always seemed to be with High Right in all of the trail pics. At 4:45 he came out, but no High Right. Another small buck came out and they sparred for a bit and a nice 8pt also showed. Suddenly, they all moved on and everything was quiet. A few minutes later i saw a deer heading my way and I grabbed my binos for a better look. It was High Right! I grabbed the bow and had just ranged the trail that he was walking on... 30 yards exactly. He came into the opening as I drew back and I waited for him to get completely broadside then grunted. He stopped and turned his head my direction as I let the arrow go and watched it sink into him right behind the shoulder! He whirled straight away from me and went down 70yds from the stand. I sent Tim and Rodney a text immediately and I told Rodney that I threw a fist in the air and let out a Georgia redneck holler for him. lol http://www.realtree.com/img/2/medium/101_0007.jpg
