  1. Re: Fourwheelers and deer? As long as you or anyone else don't chase the deer with the ATV's. I have been riding right past deer on my trails. They have become like crows feeding on roadkill on the side of the road. The know the cars won't veer of the road. The deer know the ATV's are'nt coming off the trails. Turkey are different. They spook with the slightest sounds. In my exp. Oh yeah....Stay out of the bedding areas too! Keep those as sancturaries until the last hunts of the seasons.
  2. Re: Changes to NY Why is it when someones disagrees, it is called bickering? You'll never hear from this hunter that the early season is hard. I tried to make a difference in the coming seasons. I contacted MANY hunters, by standing outside sport shops and handing out DEC meeting info about the changes. I made phone calls and e mails topeople to try and get as many hunters as possible involved with the decision making process. SOO many people could not even be bothered. These same people probobly don't even vote. Not everyone is gonna be made happy with changes. One thing we are all united on is the love of hunting whitetail. When we get to do it, depends on our personal schedule. YES....ABSOLUTLEY I would've loved to see the early archery in the so zone start at oct 1st. That didn't happen. I was suprised. If the objective of DEC is to take more deer and have more hunters involved, that wouldv'e been a good way to do it. I might have even given up a few days of late bow for it to start on oct 1st. The ONLY issue I had was the insertion of a muzzle season right smack in the heat of the rut. Remember, DEC wanted to put a 6 day muzz season in the last week of october. I don't know about where you hunt, but, all the rutting and fighting and big time deer activity is in full stream where I hunt at that time of the year. So to have guns going off for a week, then back to bow would be useless to anyone going out there with a bow, unless it is a bow only area. Then it don't matter. The guns will never go off there. One of the great things about these BB's to me, is the vast difference of hunters. We are all united in hunting, but do things just a bit different. That what makes us all individuals. I welcome a different opinion than mine, I enjoy exchanging ideas and exploring the betterment of our sport AND getting involved to make a difference. Don't wait for the next guy...it'll never happen. So to put all this in context... opinions are like bungholes...everyones got 'em
  3. Re: Are coyotes becoming more aggressive? Yes, I agree that yotes have their place in the chain. But when it comes to the detriment of other animals, I'd say the yote is low on the list of animals that concern us. Deer is more important to this state than predators( economy and recreation). Since last deer season, I have found 3 deer carcasses, yote killed, on my land. Thats just on my land. I know they were yote killed , because they were healthy deer. Last deer season I saw ONLY 2 does and about 5 yotes! My buddy shot 2 of 'em, rolled both, and they got up and RAN away! Hit 'em with a 25-06 too! Tough dogs. In the southern zone of NY, we are overun with yotes here. There should be a 2 year , year round season to bring the yote pop back into check. With not many people hunting them, their population explodes. I am pretty hard pressed to see small game on my land. But about EVERY 100yds or so, I can show you coyote scat. I think they are beautiful majestic animals, who are truely a trophy if you get one. But the So.Zone of NYS is in trouble if they don't get the yote pop back into check. I have seen NO fawns, rabbits and very few squirrels. What did they go to Miami? No...don't wipe out yotes, but drastically reduce their population for a year or 2. They'll recover.Yotes are extremely resilient.
  4. Re: how many people use field dressing gloves? I always use latex gloves to field dress deer or any game for that matter. And yes, the gut pile does help ya stay warm
  5. Re: Stand Heights When I am out of rope,to pull my bow up, I know I'm where I want to be. Usually about 20'
  6. Re: Changes to NY Not one season, but BOW lost time afield. Who works harder than a bow hunter to harvest game? Muzzleloaders are good for 200yards now! Good luck trying to get a deer with a bow after all the guns have gone off and the woods are flooded with orange. That would only benefit people who hunt in bow ONLY areas. I hunt with all 3 weapons. Bow, rifle and muzzleloader. I have an interest in every season that takes place. DEC asked for opinions about the possible changes, held meetings around the state( I went to 2 of them). Almost all of the opinions voiced, were against the early muzz season. Year round coyote was proposed and shot down, antler restrictions were proposed, and shot down. To me, these are 2 very important things to help the deer herd and the quality of bucks harvested. DEC didn't agree. ALL of the hunters I spoke to DID! Many people do not like change, and what DEC did was fiddle with rules and regs that were untouched since the 50's! Nothing is constant, but change. I'll find a way to adapt...somehow
  7. Re: Changes to NY One thing...in the southern zone, there will be almost NO Doe tags for anyone! To get a doe tag, one must have 3! preference points! YIKES! The catskill region seems to be the hardest hit by the new DMP regs. Region 3 and some of region 4 look to be the hardest hit. I'm happy that DEC did not put the early muzz season in october. BUT....bow hunters lost 4 days of hunting due to the start of the season after columbus day. Bow hunters should be compensated for that. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the october season, I have a few BIG bucks coming into my yard from time to time.
