Re: hunting scrapes
I usually do not hunt scrapes because a buck can scent check his scrapes without having to stand right over them. He can scent check them dependind on the wind and if he gets a whiff of you, he's gone. When I do hunt a promising scrape area, I usually hunt a distance away, dependind on the wind, so I can see if a buck comes by the scrape or around it to scent check. But once the rut kicks in forget the scrapes and look for the areas that hold the does.
For your question Crispy, the scrapes you see are most likely territorial scrapes and most of the time they are not refreshened, but if you hit a scrape during the pre-rut and it rains, you can bet he will be around to take the leaves off and refreshen that scrape after it rains.
