  2. Re: Elk Hunters - throw everything you got at me [ QUOTE ] Thanks rifleman, I will print that out. I bought a pair of boots at Cabelas Sunday but just not sure. I haven't really wore them yet but I am concerned that I wont have a good enough pair of shoes. What do you guys recommend for a pack. I looked at some but they were about 179 bucks for a frame pack. [/ QUOTE ] I have a badlands pack but I can't recommend spending that much money for the once in a lifetimers. Just get yourself a fleece day pack. There is no need for a frame pack.
  3. Re: First time elk hunter Here is a link to some good info that should help you start out. http://members.tripod.com/~elkhunter2/index.html
  4. Re: How many members from SD? Just down the road from you buddy
  5. Re: Want to buy some hogs. There is a fella from Tallulah (sp) LA that live traps them on a levee that runs from there all te way to Arkansas. I have bought a few from him for a buddy of mine that lives south of I 10. If your interested let me know and I'll put you in touch with him.
  6. Re: First time elk hunter It all depends on what your expectations are. I'd narrow your questions down some and start picking our brains.

  8. Re: Elk Ivory for sale My wife has a neclace and earings made out of some of mine. I still have about half a coffee can full. I really am not in the market but let me say that those ivorys are beautiful. Here are a few links to what the finished products look like.http://www.elkjewelry.net/ http://www.blueskyjewelry.com/ http://www.elkivoryjewelry.com/homepage.htm http://www.elkjewelry.net/
  9. Re: NFAA in SD no I didn't shoot at it, but I was there for a day. I forgot to see who all was going to be coming. I ask because the event was held in my home town. Scott and Bruce at Dakota Archery have been selling my all my hunting and fishing gear for almost 20 years now. I'm not saying I like or dislike them but they are local and good at what they do. Maybe next year we can plan a get together around that time and have a BBQ at my place or something. Did you like the course? How does it compare to others? That is where I get in most of my bow practice. Knobby where did you travel to Yankton from?
  10. I just purchased a new Ruger M77 and had a jewell trigger put in. What I'm wondering is I noticed the barrel is not the longer barrel like Browning uses. I have shot this round enough to know it preforms it's best with a longer barrel and a slow burning powder. Will this 24 inch barrel effect the preformance by not burning all the powder? If ho how much difference will it make?
  11. Re: Elk Hunters - throw everything you got at me I hunt most years during the rifle season between Walden and Steamboat Sprgs. Take along some good binocs and a spotting scope if you have one. Remember you never know what the weather will do. Here is a packing list I have used for years on my elk and deer hunts in the rockies.
  12. Re: How many have gotten a TRUE robin hood? I have 6 from my days of shooting indoor 300 tournaments. They were accidents as well though. I have them all yet. In my defence though those 2512 eastons make a bigger target.
  13. Did anyone attend the NFAA shoot in Yankton SD?
  14. Re: How hours do you work on the job 12 hrs a day 6am to 6pm for 14 days then I get 14 days off, Have been repeating this rotation for about 6 years now. I work on an offshore rig for Transocen. I would like to "catch out" of a new port sometime though. It seems like the last 2 years we have been either leaving from Morgan City La, or Cameron La. Anyway enough about that. 14, 12 hr days at a time.
  15. Re: Why Arent We Making Our Own Oil? We can blame the bleeding heart liberal democrats for alot of things, but even I have to say that tey are not effecting this one. On the rigzone website they are recruiting workers to be stationed on both land rigs and off shore in Alaska. There are also becoming quite a few offshore platforms off the coast of california. I believe the last time I heard Georgia was the only state with out an oil well. I worked as a mudhand for a few years right out of high school and just cant imagine the way the operationg expences have changed in a oil field. I worked for baker and Hughes and or daily expences were like a million and a half a day back in the mid 90's. I bet that has almost doubled now days. All we can do is support all the drilling operations we can and conserve as much fuel as we can and hope for the best.
  16. Re: How many deer have you harvested with your bow? I have 14 whitetails, 6 stinkey speed goats, 3 muleys, and a blonde colored manitoba black bear all with the bow.
  17. Re: Deadline for 2006 elk contest sign-up Thanks Dakota
  18. Re: 2006 elk contest sign-up Rifleman25 (Brian) Colorado 2ND season bull and cow tag rifle
  19. Re: 2006 elk contest? I'm holding a bull and a cow tag right now. I'd be up for it
  20. Re: Elk hunting. [ QUOTE ] I'll be w/ rifleman, stevebeilgard and gobblerdad in Wyoming starting on Sept. 14- at least the 18th by gillette. Is that unit 94, Brian? I can't wait to give that bull a dirt nap! No you won't be in 94 Dakota. You'll be near Gillette. I have a different season anyway. Mine is in oct yours is in sept. I can't wait to see you and that new rifle in action though. Dakota [/ QUOTE ]
  21. Re: SD Realtree forum get-together Dakota I'm still up for it. If nothing else you and your dad could just come down and hunt at my place if nobody else is interested.
  22. Re: Tag\'s keep going up 55 for a double tag buck and doe here 45 for just a buck and 15 for just a skin head. I really don't mind. I'd like to see the price of tags go up more yet. I figure if the prices keep going up the less tags people will buy and I can actually improve my odds of drawing. I have better luck drawing out of state than I do right here at home.
  23. Re: The Nuge on Deer Hunting lol
  24. Re: A good bipod? I have hunted Wyoming colorado and utah all my life and can honestly say the shorter version of Stoney points shooting stix has replaced my harris bipods. If you feel you need to have something connected to the gun a company from Montana has a product called the snipe pod. Might be woth a look. I can tell you they are lighter than a bipod but I'll only carry stix onto my mountains anymore.
  25. Re: Elk hunting. [ QUOTE ] Rifleman, You are correct I am with Diamond-J-Outfitters. I hope you guys have a good year and good luck. Last year we seen a bunch of elk and the deer are starting to come back, also seen alot of moose. Talk to you soon, [/ QUOTE ] I have noticed the last few years that the populations of both deer and elk seem to be growing, at least in our area. I'm a bit nervous though about the point system the state implimented. I think some of the known good units like 94 elk and 101 deer will become about impossible to draw with out max points now. I used to get turned down about 1 year out of 4 now it might take me 4-6 years to even draw anymore in the regular drawing. Atleast we have the land owner option yet.
