Re: hunt when you are sick? Oh ya ....I'm stupid enough to go out hunting even if my health is failing me. I'm not bragging about it, just saying I'm stupid .....Just ask my wife, she'd be more than happy to confirm this...LOL

On two of the small properties that I hunt on, I have my ground blind about 100 yards from the farm house. Although I don't live there to have the luxury of seeing when the deer are coming by in the mornings and the evenings, It is their pattern to use the fence line as their travel route between feeding on the next 2 farms over and the bush. Too me it is no different than setting up on any other fence line, where there is no barn or house present. The deer that come by there are just as wild as any other. If they were tame deer, then I would have trouble going after them, because it would be too easy . They still manage to give us the slip, whether we are 100 yrds from the barn, 400 yrds from the barn or a mile from the barn. I guess living there may make you a bit more of an opportunist, but isn't opportunity part of hunting. If you saw a nice buck consistantly 500 yrds from the house using a certain travel route and moved in on him. Doesn't that make you a smart hunter and an opportunist ...lol If you were out on the prairies and saw a deer going into a small bunch of trees every day at noon and decided to set up and wait for him. Doesn't that make you an opportunist and a good hunter. Don't mind me, I'm just blabbering

Re: Wild weather here It's still howling winds and raining cats and dogs here. Makes it very difficult to get in a half decent hunt. Bad wether like this kind of takes the fun out of it.

Re: Neck shots I have been shotgun hunting for deer here on Vancouver Island for the past 25 years. We are not allowed to use slugs in our shotgun areas because there is ussually houses close by and slugs travel too far. We use 00 buck or 000 buck shot. Neck shots have always been my favourite with the shotgun. I have set a limit however on when I will take a neck shot. 0 to 20 yrds - go for the neck (just behind the ear or high on the neck) Never go for a head shot. It is too easy for the pellets to graze off of the skull at any given spot. I can't remember ever seeing a deer run with a neck shot from 00 or 000 buck shot at 20 yards or less. Anything over 20 yrds is a behind the shoulder shot. Maximum range using SSG's is 35 yrds. Anything over that and your taking a chance on wounding the animal. If you follow these guidlines while using SSG's on deer, you will have no problem having a deer get away on you ....I guarantee it. Taking a deer in the neck with any other weapon is a smaller target than the lung and heart area and I would not recommend it, even though I have harvested 3 deer, with neck shots at close range with my bow.(Not on purpose though) [ 11-10-2002, 12:47 PM: Message edited by: buckee ]

It's been howling winds and pounding rain here for the last 4 days. My buddy Mcbuck went down to the farm before lunch today to sit for the afternoon until dark. Man...I hope he gets something, because it's miserable out there. I saw 17 deer there last night, along with a nice big mature 6 point.

I do the same thing and clear paths for the deer to walk. You can redirect deer in heavy brush areas, right where you want them to travel. I have also noticed how much they like fresh dug up dirt. They actually seem to play in it. I don't know what the attraction is, but I know they like it. [ 11-09-2002, 10:16 AM: Message edited by: buckee ]

I'll do my best here. If the picture or gif (as the small pics and animations are called) that you want in your signature is in a website, it's fairly easy. 1-Go to a web site that has animated pics (or gifs) 2-find the animated pic you want, and RIGHT CLICK on it. 3-go to the bottom of the square that pops up ....to properties. 4-LEFT CLICK on properties 5-you will see an address for that pic or gif about half way down.....highlight it by HOLDING DOWN YOUR LEFT CLICK AND RUNNING OVER IT. 6-It will all be covered in BLUE 7-Now,take your finger off of the left click when complete address has been covered in blue and RIGHT CLICK ON THE BLUE ADDRESS. 8-A screen will pop up and then LEFT CLICK ON COPY 9-NOW COME BACK INTO THIS SITE AND LEFT CLICK ON "MY PROFILE" AT THE TOP CORNER OF THIS PAGE 10-Another box comes up and you LEFT CLICK ON VIEW/UPDATE PROFILE 11-your profile comes up and you go down to SIGNATURE AND LEFT CLICK ON WHERE YOU WANT IT TO GO IN YOUR SIGNATURE (eg, after your name or under it etc) Just make sure the curser is on the right spot. 12- then type this 14-Now without touching your space bar TYPE ' alt='> 14-Now without touching your space bar TYPE '> AFTER THE PASTED ADDRESS 15-YOUR ALMOST DONE NOW SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE AND LEFT CLICK ON "UPDATE PROFILE" 15-VOILA YOUR DONE This 2 fingered typing is hard man, I hope I don't have to do this again.LOL I had to play with mine quite a bit to get everything in the proper place I hope you get it bud, it sure is worth it once you've figured it out. GOOD LUCK

Re: What would you do? If you got permission to hunt someone elses property besides your own, whether it's next door or down the road a spell, it's your responcibility to get a hunting license.

I imagine (and I'm certainly no expert either) that it is because of the sap content in the tree. Liquid is a good conductor. (Just guessing) Height of the tree would play a roll too.

Re: Are most of the bucks just passing through? I think it depends on what time of the year it is and the type of country you are located in, whether the deer are passing through or homesteaders. I think this time of the year, you can safely say that all the deer you see in any one spot are locals or homesteaders. In the winter (depending on your location) the year come from miles away in search of winter grazing. This is even more evident in moutainous regions where the deer will migrate down into the valleys and travel for very long distances to find food. The same deer will slowly migrate back to their stomping grounds come spring. When it comes to a bucks territory, I believe that basically they have 1 square mile or so of territory that they patrol and live in. This varies from place to place and species to species. I know the blacktails around here (in the valley) stay within 1 or 2 square miles of their range all year round, but the high mountain blacktails here, migrate down into the valley in search of winter food. They basically follow the snow line down and then return to the mountains as the snowline receeds. I've always wondered about the numbers of dominant bucks in any given area too. It's hard to say how many are there, since their territories overlap with each other. |-------------| |-------|-| B | | |--|-|------ |---|-------| | | B|-|-B----|B- | | |----|----| | | | |-----------| |------------| As you can see from this poor rendition of a bucks territory it would be possible to see 4 or more dominate bucks within 1 square mile of their territory and yet all within the same square mile at any given time. Don't try this at home....LOL (this is not what I drew before I posted this...LMBO) [ 06-18-2002, 10:33 PM: Message edited by: buckee ]

I envey the possition your in. If my wife and daughter loved hunting and shooting then I would definately try to get them a rifle that would suit their needs. Sounds like a great idea to me. I say go for it and get them something that, like you say, will be a little more forgiving on the shoulders. Your a lucky guy to have this problem.

Re: Will this be a lesson learned? LOL....I imagine they just want to get it done and over with. Keep them going on those fence rows. If I could make a suggestion. ...If it gets real hot, maybe you could bring them some lemon-ade or something. Showing them some kindness in the middle of their restitution to you will blow their minds, believe me. That would play on their minds in the future more than the hard work. It's like heaping hot coals on there head.

Re: Will this be a lesson learned? Now there is a step-dad who knows what he's doing. Those kids will be too tired to think about revenge....lol. The only thing they'll be thinking about is "I'm never going to do something like this again". That is perfect justice and will teach the boys a very valuable lesson for sure.

Sorry to here your daughter got the pox. I'm glad she's feeling better. Yes, it is a shame that parents don't have the brains to keep their kids home from school when they are sick. In todays world with both parents working in most households, and working under the threat of maybe losing your job if you put your family before your work, it's no wonder some folks make the wrong choice and ignore their childs and other childrens needs. I'm not trying to make excuses for any of these parents, I'm just spewing off, because I don't think it's right that both parents are forced to go out and work these days in order to make ends meet.

Yeh...hunting pictures.com has not been working right for a long, long, long time now. I have no idea what their problem is, but they don't seem too interested in fixing it at the present. I wish I knew.

Re: The Best Calls Out There Welcome to the RealTree forums BDnT, I prefer the Woodswise mini-tube for deer hunting. I've tried others and they just don't seem to have what it takes to make these blacktails react. I bought the can and used it last season with no success, but am willing to give it another go this fall. I've got lots of diferent grunt tubes and doe bleat calls, but I'm sticking with the WoodsWise. (Of course, I am hunting blacktails, and they do sound a bit different than whitetail, not much though) But I use my WoodsWise when I go to the interior hunting whitetails and have had great success calling them in as well. You can do a buck grunt, doe in heat, doe bleat or fawn in distress ,all on the same call and it's not a huge cumbersome call, but tucks away nicely down the front of your shirt ,when you want it out of the way. I also have had great success with the WoodsWise friction tube communication call. Does and fawns love it. [ 04-16-2002, 07:01 PM: Message edited by: buckee ]
