  1. My part of central Ohio, (Delaware/Licking county), depends on zoning areas. If it's small lots zoned for residential $10,000 on up. Ag land, probably starts around $4,000 if you're lucky.
  2. Most of my garden got washed out. Only crop that did well was my first, 2nd and 4th corn plot. Potatoes did well too as they were mounded. Beans, squash, pumpkins, melons, spinach, peppers, tomatoes, cabbage...got killed by 21 straight days of rain in June/July.
  3. Saw that on facebook Kev. Very nice. I played in my annual scramble a couple weeks ago, and I still haven't hit a hole in one.
  4. I'd try and pattern an IC with different loads. I know my Benelli works best with 6's or 7.5's. I'll go to 8's if the wind is calm. I think, more than anything, you have to be disciplined with a 20 gauge. If I can't see the black of the eye, I don't shoot. I always have to sit away from all my buddies because they shoot 12 gauges. Get yourself a mojo. We have great success with them, and it draws them in close.
  5. I'll have to teach them some ACTUAL accounting or computer technology Martin. I'm not a history teacher.
  6. No, never have. I don't think anyone would want mine, and I'm running out of them to give away. Bad joke, sorry. I've had 8 major surgeries, the last one last September on my liver, and like Ohiobucks said, modern medicine is pretty incredible. I'm pretty sure they can do kidney surgery with minimal cutting these days. My mom had numerous surgeries on her kidneys for stones, and she'd be down for a few months. Now days, you're up and around in no time. Nobody can make the decision for you, but if you're a match, and want to do it, don't let the fear of surgery deter you, it's really not that bad. Pray on it, search your heart and you'll make the right decision.
  7. Happy to help William. 815--I teach on the high school level.
  8. My 21st year of teaching at my current school begins tomorrow. We have a new superintendent, new assistant superintendent, new treasurer, and a new principal. I'm teaching 6 different classes this semester. I have about 5 more classes to take to get my new license teaching special education kids. It was interesting to see all the current special ed. teachers come and talk to me. I'm learning a lot, and excited to get going, but I do miss parts of my life I had 2 years ago or so, namely hunting and getting ready to hunt. I knew I was in for big changes, but a lot of these changes have been tougher than I thought they would be. The good news is, it's a sizeable raise so my savings account for my own hunting land will be growing very soon. I just hope I can buy it before I die. Sorry about the long paragraph, but the return key isn't working again.

    Update

    Very cool. Congrats.
  10. Depends on the circumstances, but I wouldn't unequivocally write him off.
  11. Good post Alan, I agree. Some guys love it so much they want to make money at it, or get famous. That's fine with me if that's what you want, I don't think I could ever do it. I think it would take the fun out of it. Comparing yourself to other hunters is silly to me too. I'll kid around with my buddies and say I'm a better hunter, but I'm not, and who cares if you are or aren't? Is that the point of hunting? I guess for some it is. For me it's seeing if I can fool the deer and sharing the stories with a buddy or two.
  12. When did heavy, thrashing metal guitars become cool in videos? Don't care for that. Odd face paint schemes look weird, but don't necessarily "get my goat." And, for some reason, I don't like when hunters tell me their "hit list" and name "their" deer. It gets old.
  13. I'm 9 months away from my 2nd masters, so unfortunately I won't have much time to hunt again this year. So my goal is to get out as much as I can, and hopefully share it with a buddy or two. Killing a deer will be a bonus, I'm quite sure.
  14. Far as I know there are no scents for the thermacell, just the blue pads that go in there and heat up the repellent. It works, and I've never seen it spook a deer.
  15. Tim's a good guy. Met and talked with him in Wheeling a few years back.
  16. Sorry to hear this Jeramie, my condolences.
  17. Saw a segment on North American Deer Hunter the other day, and Dr. What'shisface says it works. Whatever, I'm not a believer. Just another gimmick in my opinion, one more contraption to drag into the field. Unethical? Others have covered that pretty good, tough to determine what's unethical in some cases, this being one of them. When I get the chance to hunt, I subscribe to the KISS method--bow, stand, camo, fanny pack, watch the wind and set up accordingly.
  18. Totally forgot about attractants. Yes, you have to have attractants like snipe in estrous, in order to be successful. Snipe mineral, snipe food (where legal), dominant snipe spray, gel, lube, wicks, snipe extract, snipe tarsal, snipe grunt/snotrwheeze combo, snipe rattling real and real life authentic bags, sticks, sheds. Gotta have it. Necessary to be successful. Oh, and snipe wipes, don't forget your snipe wipes.
  19. I have zero experience with trapping, so I think I'll move this to the Varmint room. Strut10 knows his stuff though. Good advice there.
  20. Well, at least a nine, assuming he has brows. In my experience, points are developed simultaneously, i.e. if you see a G4 on one side, you'll see at least a nub of a G4 on the other side. Genetic pattern in your area plays a big part though. One buddy I have over in Knox county has deer that all have a weak right side. The last point on the right is always shorter than the left for some reason. Consistent pattern ever since we've been hunting his property.
  21. Pretty sure it is. As I recall the regs state that as long as it pertains to "normal agricultural purposes" it's OK. My buddy plants about 5 acres of sunflower and millet in the summer and mows it off right before dove season. The DNR agent lives two doors down from him and has visited us many times while hunting and he's never had an issue with it. Place I used to hunt in northwest Ohio the property manager planted it all the time, then flooded the fields right before duck season. Again, totally legal.
  22. In my experience, yes. Not much metal exposed to catch wind and plane.
