If those do not work out, try a military surplus store. I buy my kids BDU pants there, usually for $10-$12.95

Tomorrow will be a loooooooong day at work. This weekend my son will be deer hunting for the first time, can't wait till he gets one! It will be too warm for me, but it doesn't seem to have slowed the deer down yet, I think we will have majot rut activity going on! Good Luck everyone, be safe

1979 - first moring ever on stand, sitting with my dad, had never shot the gun, a 30 30. We were sitting in a stand next to about a 15 acre clear cut, I saw the buck cross the about 200 yards away, to far to shoot. He walked the entire edge of the meadow and popped out on the road about 30 yards from the stand. Little 5 point.

What caliber does everyone use for whitetail deer?
Missed160 replied to just-an-illusion's topic in Deer Hunting
Wow I am amazed, it seems that the 270 is the most popular (I figured it would be 30 06). I shoot the 270 and or a 30 30 -
I live in a suburban neighborhood, last night about 5pm I was driving by an area about 4 miles from the house, which is about a 30 acre open/wooded area. I see deer there pretty often. Being about an hour of light left & the time of year, I pulled over, got my rattling horns out of the truck & went for a walk. I found a cool looking spot on a hill, wind in my face, so I did a quiet sequence, then about 5 munites later a bit louder one. Within a couple minutes a big 9 point, which came in very aggressivly, and stood about 30 yards away looking for the fight, he saw me & bolted. I saw a smaller buck about 100 yards west circling downwind. After the 9 point left, I decided to move back to see the buck which was circling, there were 2 other small bucks behind which came from somewhere behind me.. It was a great hour, I need to go back with a camera, and I added a spot to my shed hunting areas. I want to find the sheds from that 9 point.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like you got off pretty easy with that one! My brother hhad one hang up at a point they couldn't zap it, so he had to pass it.. It took him about 3 days of misery.

The 30 30 will have less kick then the 243. My kids love to shoot the 30 30 marlin, because it is so mild. The only issue I have with them for kids is the safey. Assuming you are looking at a lever action, having to jack a shell in, then hold the hammer & pull the trigger isn't a very safe way to do it..

We live in Minnesota and are interested in going somewhere next year to hunt pigs. What states would be good places to start looking? Do we need a guide? Any info would be greatly appreciated.. Thanka

That is a cool deer! Nice that you kept working to go find him, even though the meat was spoiled, you did the right thing!

The ones I have carried the most are .270 & .06 A bolt. But my new favorite rifle is a Marlin 30 30 which my dad gave me. He never hunted deer much & bought this just to go with us. I put a Bausch & Lomb 1.5 x 6 scope on it & now love to carry it. Shots well enough out to 150 yards.

Do Different Brand of Bullets make a Difference?
Missed160 replied to texastrophies's topic in Rifles & Accessories
"Did the 4 remingtons first, they centered about an inch high, with a sub inch grouping. Then switched over to the Winchester, actually shot 4 rounds, but the first one was pretty much a floater switching over from the rem., anyways they were about 2 inches high and an inch right with a little over 1 1/2 inch grouping. Then switched to the Federals, and shot 4 rounds. Experienced the same floating affect from the first round, then the next three were within 3/4" grouping about an inch high & left." With these results it doesn't look like there is any real difference between the Remington & the "Expensive Federals" - with less then a 1" group and currently shooting 1" high - there is no reason not to shoot the Remingtons. -
I need to shave everyday, I can't use an electric because it gives me a resh. BUT, I am able to use disposables, the cheap disposable don't work, but the Gillette 3 blade work & are less expensive..

Are you shooting 100 gr or 125gr?

I wear a cabelas 200 gram thinsulate parka. I wore is in Manitoba last year at -0 temps, layered beneath it, and was never cold..

Primo's True Double - The reeds are spaced apart about 1/16 in, takes some getting used too, but great raspy sound.
-
In Manitoba last year I shot a 140gr BTSP in my .270. This is an interlock bullet, very accurate. The buck didn't even twitch, shot at 130 yards quartering to me. When I was dropping the deer off at the butcher I found the bullet lodged in the hide behind the opposite shoulder..
