Take the cattails out, they will take over everything less then 6' deep.

The most important thing to do is to start getting rid of the sunnies, they will stunt everything. I hunted some land with a stocked pond on it, the fisheries guy we talked to said to dig a hole & just start catching sunnies & tossingthem in. he said you really need to work to keep their population at what is should be...

That s actually a green sunfish.

Saturday morning was the last morning of my time period. I had been out a couple other mornings & a couple afternoons & seen gobblers every time. Seems as if I went right, they went left.. So saturday morning I set up on a field edge, as far west as I can go on this farm. I had birds gobbling a bit west of my on the next farm where they usually roost. About 6:30 a bird gobbled south east of me. I am sure that this is the same bird I have seen a couple times, and he always came to the field LATE - I hadn't heard him gobble, or seen him in the field before 10am yet. I had planned to move down there late in the morning & set up for him. When he gobbled I grabbed my decoys & ran down there to see if he was going to come out earlier. I got set up clucked a couple times & he gobbled back from about 150 yards straight south of me. After clucking a few times & getting gobbled at, I could hear him spitting & drumming in the woods. Finally I saw him, full strut about 80 yards south of me, he strutted along a small ridge top & ended up on the field about 90 yards west of me. It took him about 15 minutes to get down to me, full strut the whole way! I shot him at about 30 yards. It is one of my most memorable birds, I am sure it is the one which came into my son a couple weeks ago & locked up at about 50 yards. He is my second heaviest bird 24 lb 6 oz - Spurs 1 1/8, beard - 10 3/4. I will post pictures later..

What is your favorite way to cook Wild Turkey?

My brother is a goose addict & does not like them at all. He hunts saskatchewan twice a year & shoots LOTS & Lots of geese - he swears by BB's. A lot better/tighter pattern..

I have 2 sons, my older boy doesn't enjoy hunting, loves fishing - my younger boy loves hunting, not so much on fishing.. I have continued to enter my older son in our turkey lottery, just in case.. well this year he got drwan for the first times period. I convinced him to just try it.. I scouted a couple farms I have permission to hunt. We went to one, and even before we were set uo there were 4 birds gobbling west of us. We set up on a field edge in set short grass where they like to hang out. Right at sunrise a bird was strutting on a hill top about 150 yards west of us, he finally moved to about 60 yards & stood there & put on a show for about 20 minutes, strutting, gobbling.. Then he just packed up & started walking back up the hill. I told my son, as soon as he goes over the top, we are going to chase him. I grabbed 1 decoy & we snuck up to right below the hill top. I put out the decoy & we set up a quiet as possible. I clucked & he started gobbling again, right over the rise probably 50 yards away. This went on for about 15 minutes, he would NOT come over the hill. Then 3 more younger birds came over the hill, they saw the decoy & one puffed up & started heading for it, as soon as he offered a clear shot I told me son to shoot him. Perfect shot. My sons was jumping up & down in the field. He was so thrilled. Nice bird, 4" beard, 18lbs. After we had moved up the hill & where waiting for the gobbler to come back over we had 3 deer walk down the field edge, all within 10 yards of Ben. He had a great day, I had so much fun spending the day with him & seeing him experience the morning.. I don't think he will ever be a hunting addict, but he wants to turkey hunt again, asked if we could go to South Dakota next spring.

My first ones didn't go so well, I went to an Army dentist in 1984 - He said all 4 should come out. He pulled the top two first, WITHOUT GAS/NOVACINE, nothing!!! I said "Sir, with all due respect, you are not touching me again!" I ended up waiting 25 years to pull the last two. Had them pulled last fall, couple hours of discomfort, nothing major.. Good Luck!

The one thing I would ask for would be to end greed in people.. As I watch the news, it is appearant that god has given the world everything we need to live & enjoy our lives, but many people suffer because of the greed of others.

There is soooooo much to see!!!! I go every few years for a week & don't see everything. Here are my DC TIPS.. 1- The metro is a great, easy way to get around. Very clean & user friendly. Works great for going around the mall, smithsonians & monuments. 2 - Bring good walking shoes! A lot of the stuff is within walking distance, but you will put a few miles on your feet. 3 - Rent a car for a day or two & get out of the city itself. 3 great things to see that are just outside DC are; ARLINGTON Cemetary, Mount Vernon & Monticello. If you want to do someting a bit out side the normal tourist stuff, go to Annapolis Maryland. It is about a 45 minute drive, on Chesepeak Bay. You can go though the Naval training center, lots of cool shops, old trading centers & SEAFOOD, fresh Seafood... You can easily spend 3 days in and around the mall. The monuments are awesone (Jeffersons is my favorite), most of the smthsonian stuff is free. The National Archives is right on the mall itself, you have to go see the Declaration of Independence. Library of Congress is fun, but Time consuming. There is a new mueseum a block off the mall, the Spy museum, about the cold war spying between the US & USSR. Fords Theatre where Lincoln was shot has been closed for re-modeling, but should be open now, along with the house accross the street where he died. The tour or the US MINT is one of the best ones out there. One final tip - Go on line ahead of time & order your tickets, it will save you a LOT of time! I really love DC. I would be glad to help with anything you need, please feel free to contact me.. Reed

I loved Korea when I was stationed there. Awesome people, great food, low prices...

I had posted something on this previously, but I haven't figured out a price yet.. A family friend is selling most of his guns, because of his age. I want to buy one for my son, but can't figure out how much to offer.. He has a H&R .243 semi auto, 2x7 westernfield scope. He said he bought the gun new in about 1973. 2 clips, 1 1/2 boxes ammo. It is in pretty good shape, some signs of use. Also, within about a year of owning it he dropped it & cracked the stock, it was professionally repaired. Any input would help.

THere are a lot of quotes from Tombstone, but I still haven't seen my favorite quote from the movie: "Where's Wyatt?" "He's down by the creek walking on the water"
-
I love the movie quotes! It's cool that some of the movies quoted are some of my favorites - Josie Wales/Jerimiah Johnson/Tombstone. Some other great movies full of great lines: My Cousin Vinny - " Yeah, You Blend" / Dead on Balls Accurate

Awesome Buck - Love the brow tines / love the mass..

Now that the 09 hunting season is done, or winding down for most of us, anyone thinking of any equipment changes for next season? I am switching from feathers to vanes & have purchased some Rocky Mountain Premier broadheads, never liked messing with the rubberbands on Snypers..

-22 in St Paul Mn this morning. If you want to try something cool (no pun intended) - when it is -20 or colder, you can take a cup of boiling water outside, throw the water up in the air & it doesn't jit the ground. It just turns to vapor & goes away..

I have a Springer Spaniel. He is a pheasant machine, but will be 9 yrs old in about 2 weeks. Still hunts very hard, but is pretty sore & worn out for a couple days after a hard hunt. Not sure if I will get another hunting dog, like Tominator said, it's a lot of work to keep a hunting dog good, for a few days of hunting..

A man we used to hunt with is getting up in years & is going to sell most of his guns. He owns the land/cabin where we started deer hunting - one of the guns he is selling is a gun he let me borrow & use to shot my first deer. I would like to buy it for my son who. It is nothing special, but has some sentimental value. It is an H&R 243 Ultra semi auto. He said he bought it new in the mid 70's. Inexpensive Western field 2x7 scope.. Ideas?
