good luck ya'll. My season was over on sunday. Still might be able to get out and shoot one or two river bottom whitetail does with my bow if i ever get the time to sight it in. But most likely im done hunting until next October. Lets kill some more monsters guys! -
come on back out here and hunt then!
-
Mine was too! Tell him congrats!
-
Scoring him here?

I agree with letting her go at her own pace bud. My girlfriend went hunting with me last year but couldnt shoot her own since she hadnt taken hunter's safety. After hunting season, She took hunters safety over spring break and passed with flying colors. I took her out shooting gophers and she was a dead eye! I took her out one day this last summer and let her shoot the "deer" rifles. She wanted my 270 after the first shot she took so i had to buy her one for her own! Before shooting my 270 she had only ever shot a 22. I started her off after shooting a 22 with my 204. She wanted that one too. She then shot the 30-30 and didnt like it since it didnt have a scope or a recoil pad. She shot the 270 and was hooked after that! I bought her warm camo clothes for her birthday and her and I both kept outfitting her over the summer. She got more and more excited every day and wouldnt ever stop telling me she was goin to kill a bigger buck than me! 2nd day of general season up here she took her first buck with a perfect 100 yard shot!

Oh dont worry. The Griz choked in the Championship game last year against the Richmond Spiders. Got our butts kicked. Hopefully they wont again this year!

my girlfriend had never shot any rifle larger than a 22lr. She wanted to shoot my 270 since she was goin to start hunting with me this year. After the first shot i saw her crack a smile and after that she wanted mine! So i got an awesome deal on a Ruger Hawkeye all weather 270 and the rest is history. She is a dead eye with the sucker. Killed her first buck this year with perfectly placed shot. She never developed a flinch and loves to shoot it. I honestly think she would make me go broke buying her ammo if she could go out and shoot every day! She shoots 130 gr Federal Fusions out of hers and i shoot the same out of mine and have had awesome luck with them. I say get a 270, possibly get some reduced recoil loads just to start her off and ya'll will never look back! 270 is the way to go for deer! Good luck!

just thought i would rub it in but. Just pokin fun!

How bout them SDSU Jackrabbits today huh!? All I have to say is my U of M Griz had some Jackrabbit for lunch today! lol. Had to poke some fun at ya bud. That was the best game I have ever seen. SDSU was beating us horribly the whole game. At the start of the 4th quarter SDSU was up 48-27! Griz came back to win it 61-48! I couldnt believe it. We have been playing like crap as least the 1st half of every game and we always come back and win. They need to start playin hard and getting on top from the get go or tehy will get their butts kicked soon! Chalk up another win for the 12-0 U of M GRIZ!!!!!!!!!! I dont know which school you go to but i figured i would rub it in since you were from S. Dakota!

After 4 days of hunting my butt off, I finally filled my Deer A tag. Monday morning started out looking for a doe for my girlfriend. We saw a nice little 4x4 but not big enough to shoot on my first day of my trip. Monday evening led to nothing. Tuesday morning I walked a big irrigation ditch and jumped a few does and little fork horn. My dad shot a doe and we drug her to the truck. As we were loading her up, I looked just south and a buck came out of no where walking down the hill. I got my bipod folded out and laid down prone. Dad ranged him at 492 yards and I put the bottom hash mark of my Burris Ballisticplex cross hair behind his shoulder. As I pulled the trigger he took a step and I hit him a little far back. We loaded his deer up and waited about 45 mins. When we got down to where he was standing, we found a blood trail about 20 yards long and then it was like someone turned off the faucet. No blood after that and he made it into a jungle of a thicket that was huge. We walked every inch of the brush and never found him. I was sicker than i have ever been. Sad and mad at myself, we headed home. Yesterday morning we went up to the mountains to look for a mule deer buck and only saw 3 does. the wind was blowing about 80mph and kept everything holed up. Yesterday evening I went and sat in a large straw bale stack and had some other hunters park 200 yards from me on the road and eliminate my chances of any deer coming into my stubble field. I watched my buddy shoot his buck about a mile away through my binos. Since he shot his buck last night, he brought my dad and I out to where i shot my buck last year and he shot his last night. We set up on the hill and glassed down into the fields. The heavy 5x5 he had been seeing came out in the field and was chasin a doe. I cut across the bottom and got to the edge of the field. I couldnt see him cuz he bedded down and I didnt know it. After looking for him about 20 mins, he got up and followed a doe goin from my right to left. He was about 320 yards out and I wanted to take a closer shot. I crawled down into the ditch and cut him off. He came walking out into the other field by himself and fed his way to me. I had set up my shooting sticks and was watching him through the scope. He spotted me but the only shot i had was straight on. I pulled the trigger and he bucked and ran about 40 yards and died. After gutting him, I took out his heart, lungs, and liver. A 130 gr Federal Fusion out of a 270 did its job! My dad and our friend watched the whole thing through the spotting scope! Our friend is the taxiderist that did the Euro mount for my girlfriends buck that she took off this property earlier this year. He is doing a shoulder mount for me on this one! Here is the pics! The buck on the right is the buck my friend took yesterday evening. His scored 142". Mine is on the left. Look at that MASS!

Finally got my buck this morning after losing a buck tuesday morning. About a 100 yard shot and he only ran 40 yards. 10 points. Super mass and height but not real wide. In the second pic, mine is on the left and the guy i went hunting with this morning shot the buck on the right. His scored 142" gross. -

thats what i like to see! Hunting around Choteau has been really hard the last couple days. They arent rutting real hard and the wind has been blowing like crazy.
-
we got some like that of a grizzly bear only 10 yards from my tree stand last year. She ended up coming out of the brush with two cubs about 50 yards from me one evening. pretty cool though!
-
It all just depends on where you hit them and which in turn determines how the bullet will expand. If you happen to thread one right between the ribs on both sides it might not open up as much as one that hits bone first. I have shot coyotes and foxes with my 22-250 and 204 and if no bone is hit normal damage is done that doesnt destroy a pelt. Now when i hit bone first, that is a whole different story usually resulting in a whole the size of a softball up to the size of a football.
-
LOL. I was thinkin that the flies already found you if got deer tails in the mail!
-
WOW little dude! Congrats on the big buck! Especially for your first one. I also shot a really nice buck for my first one which was 10 years ago! It was a 6x7 mulie buck! I bet you are hooked for life now!
-
Congrats! Both AWESOME bulls for public land DIY. Where abouts did you hunt in MT? Bob Marshall?
-
I cant believe you just tortured me with blue bell ice cream.....I havent had any in a long time. Its a special treat for us since we moved up to montana because we dont have it up here. My god father brings it to us in coolers filled with dry ice. So we dont get it very often.

I am taking tuesday off work and skipping classes monday and tuesday. Heading to my home town of Choteau sunday evening after work and I wil be able to hunt Monday through Thursday. Hopefully i can lay a big boy down in those 4 days. I cant wait to get out of here and have a little break from work and school. Congrats to everyone that has taken a deer and good luck to those who havent. -
I havent had to pay for anything except for parking passes and books since my freshman year. My sophmore year i got pell grants (free money) that were $1600 each semester and my tuition was only $1500 per semester. So i was actually getting paid to go to school kinda. This last year and a half have also been covered by pell grants and other grants so i havent had to pay anything. Gotten lucky so far. Not looking forward to paying for grad school though....yuck
