  1. Been the same thing in SW Allegany County. seen some deer b4 gun season, but only 4 since the opener. IDK if they are all dead or hiding. quite a bit of yote pressures round here. think that has something to do with it. But discouraging none the less.
  2. Well only 5 days till the NY gun opener. Been seeing some nice bucks and have got a big 6 pt and a very unusual spike picked out;). The spike has about 10 inch tall spikes, looks like a spike elk, he's quite unique. who else has got there boy picked out? post some picks if you got some, sorry I don't yet.
  3. I have a pair of 600 gram Irish Setters for warm weather and when not on stand. For stand/ blind hunting I have 1000 gram Rocky Sport Utility Max. Go to Cabelas.com and read reviews of the boots.
  4. :eek:Not too sure but I don't think he's quite big enough to shoot maybe in another year, maybe a cull buck though because of his oddities.
  5. As far as I know it is leagl, but just to be sure check with your state DNR/DEC officers. Better to be safe than sorry.
  6. They are right. it doesn't matter if you outlaw spotting, they are still gonna do it because aparently they don't care about the law if they are already poaching. Personnaly I enjoy spotting very much. It allows me to see what kind and size deer are in my area without trapesing through their area. So I'm all for spotting.
  7. I feel your anger. Last year on opening day of th NY gun season I had the same problem with better results though. I got in my stand half hour before 1st light and was all settled in for a great hunt. I've scouted this area and found lots of good sign, and nobody else hunts it, until now. About 1/2 hr after light, I see a nice buck walk into the thick cover 200 yrds from my stand. 2 hrs later I hear something behind me so I spin around and see a moron tracking me, or atleast it looked like it anyways. He must have spotted me in my orange vest and tried to sneek below me thinking I haven't noticed him. So he marcks on into the thicket were the buck went. Then I hear something above me and here comes his buddy, running, tripping and making as much noise a one person could possibly make. They meet up stand and talk for a few and decide to walk 10 YARDS from my stand back the they came and out of sight. I'm all pissed off now and start lowering my gun so I can give the a piece of my mind. I just happen to look up and see the nice 6 pt come out of the thicket 40 yrds away. I pulled my gun back up( only lowered it 4 ft) and shot hte buck. When I got down, they were running tword me I think hping to steal my deer but quickly turned away when I turned to them and chambered another round. Needless to say they wasted no time getting out of there. So its not just you, everyone has this problem. Just thought I'd share mine with you.
  8. Well got some bad news. I guess I can add one up to the hit/unrecovered list this year. Shot a 3pt at 35 yrds and he moved as Ireleased and hit him in front of the shoulder. let him lay for 1.5hrs and got the crew together to find him. We found blood bout 80yrds out and 3/4 of the shaft at bout 100yrds. The broadher end (12") was found bout 150yrds from shot location. we had minimal blodd exept for two spots golf ball sized where he must have stopped. Trail lasted 300 yrds and went cold. we searched for 3hours and found nothing. so I got my more experienced neighbor to give a hand. he ended up finding him over half a mile away. he watched him and determined that hafter 6 hrs he was still moving good so hopefuly it was just a pass trough vit no vital hit (good news).
  9. I've been seeing what I believe is some rut activity. Bucks chasing bucks, does , and bucks guarding does. Also I've notice Alot of rubbing and scaping going on here in WNY. It's only my second year hunting, is this usual for this time of year of should I try changing my tactics for the rut.
  10. Mossburg 835 would be a good avaeragely priced gun
  11. going out to try my luck 2nite. been hearing a large pack of yotes around my area. they were actually i n my yard the other nite. hope all goes well its gonna be clear and cold this evening. anyone else been out yet?
  12. Anyone have a Bushnell trail cam? I have a Trail Scout model and it seems to go through ALOT of batteries. I only get on average one week on a set and thats only with bout 30 - 35 photos, no videos. I'm using Duracells and tried Energizer but they were worse. Is this a common problem with these cams or just mine? Would appreciate any input on this because batteries are too cheap anymore.
  13. I bought one last year and it is stamped on the barrel "DO NOT USE SLUGS IN GUN !!!" So I would invest in a slug barrel if I were you. Might cost bout $150 but is worth not having to buy a new gun if it ruins yours.
  14. Need some new arrows and am trying to decide between aluminum or carbon. I am using Easton XX78 Super Slams now. Looking at the Carbon Express with Front of Center design or Beman or maybe stay with Easton but in carbon. Would like alittle input on what you guys like and would recommend. Also would I have to switch anything on my bow to use carbons?
  15. This guy heard the bird gobbling and drove his truck ou there because he is lazy. He's the only person that hunts up there that can't walk through the field. And the turkey was in the woods when he dicided to use his truck as a blind, he didn't find the bird near his truck when he walked out of the woods because he was never in the woods.
  16. Here's a story for you all to enjoy. Went out this morn and wasn't having any luck. Then about 6am a bird starts hammering hard out in the middle of the field across the road from me. So I get up and walk to the top of the fiel I'm in and see a bird full strut working his was to the top of the hill in the middle of his field. So I cut down through the tree line to see if there is anything else in the field to see why he's gobblin so hard. i get through the pines and stop and look around only to see a red Ford ranger halfway up in the field on the opposite side the tom, and the bird is strutting his way to the rise in the middle of the field. Then I look closer at the truck and see the guy set up behind it using it as a blind. Are you freakin kidding me? No I'm not this is all true. Here's where it gets good. As I'm watching the bird work through the field he gets to the rise and comes out of strut like someone popped him like a balloon. He stands straight up @ 80 yrds as to say " what the ****", and tuns around and walks off. He works up around the front of the truck @ 100 yrds and inspects the truck and then walks off into the woods. I didn't stick around to talk to the guy to hear his excuses cause all I would have said is " really you don't know why? "
  17. Looking into purchasing a 2 person treestand so i can take my wife and nephew hunting. Anybody have one that they would recomend buying or not buying?
  18. With only 3 days left here in NY, the birds are finally gobbling but not coming in to to calling. Been after a bird for 2 days now and heard 2 more on the same hill as him this morn. Looked at some arial photos and talked to someone about the new area I've been hunting and found out where he's hanging out. Hopefully I can get it all together and not to late so i can at least fill one tag this season. How's everyone else doing at the tail end of the '08' season??
  19. temps supposed to get into the 70's Wed. through the weekend. Hope this will enourage the birds to start getting vocal. At the least I'll be able to get out and hunt them, the constant rains have prevented that from happening.
  20. South West Allegany County. About 10 minutuse from the PA border.
  21. How many of you have ever been obsessed with a big tom? What make themso addictive? i find that when I actually work a bird and he's responding to my calls, i just can't stop hunting him. i go after that bird every chance I get no matter if he gobbles or not. I know he's there and that all it takes for me to persue him day in and day out, most times resulting in no bird and me feeling disappointed because I couldn't seal the deal. And when next season comes around, the first place I go is where that bird was last year and then everything starts over. I want to hear your opinions on being obsessed.
  22. Well things are starting to look up here in WNY. Roosted 2 birds last night. I was so excited that I didn't sleep much. Got set up on one of them this morn and boy was he hot. He must have gobbled 100 + times to me and a real hen. Things were going to go extremely well, and then SHE started. A hen finaly woke up and she was smack dab in the middle of us. I was 75 yrds out and she was 40 yrds from him. I had a great set-up along a logging road, the only problem was he wasn't playng along. So I belly crawled 25 yrds closed to a bend in the roadway, made a few calls and then SHE pitched down flying about 200 yrds down the hill. He was still answering my calls from the roost so I thought I still had a chance. But then everything went silent. He pitched off up to a clear cut abot 250 yrds up the hill, opposite the hens direction. And then I heard another hen up at the clear cut and then the first hen wizzes by headed in the same direction. So i decided to bak out and let them have him seeing how there is no way to get to the clear cut without alerting them. It's still early and now I'm obsessed with this bird. We will meet again another day.
  23. Remington 870 magnum & Mossrurg 835
  24. Looking into getting a thermacell bug repeller. Anybody have one and how good do they work?
  25. Well, I the pre season started out great, had 5 different birds located and somewhat patterned. Everything was looking good, right? WRONG!! Starting the second week and all is quiet, litteraly. Haven't heard any birds in the morning or at night roosting. What the heck is going on? I've been in their area because it looks like someone took a bulldozer through the woods with all the leaves torn up. I'm not gonna give up because they may be with hens and their going to nest sometime. It's just weird they just dissapeard like that. Anybody else having these problems? Is it the below freezing temps at night?
