  1. Had a pretty good opener. roosted some birds the night before but misjudged their distance. when they gobbled in the morning, they were about a half mile away. they were still answering my calls so we decided to close the distance. we covered about 300 yrds and heard them. they were less than 100 yrds out. my brother set up to shoot and i was behind a tree top. there was 8 birds (4 jakes, 4 toms) had 2 jakes at 10 steps. he shot at a tom he guesses was 40 yrds and it ran off. after pacing it out, it was 50 - 55 yrds away. got on another bird bout 11:30 but he went with a hen. all together, best opener i've ever had. looking forward to the rest of the season.
  2. I'd try to get out b4 it gets light, that way you can hear them when they wake up. It should be pretty good this weekend with the nice weather. I heard some birds gobbling last saturday in the cold and snow so the warm should be better. take an owl hoot or crow call with you, you can use them if there are no real one sounding off. Good Luck, like to hear how you make out.
  3. Can I get some tips please? when roosting, should I try to get close or just hang back about 200 - 300 yrds?
  4. Re: Cutco Skinning Knives They are the best knives. I've got a large Navy fighting knife, a big game hunting knife and a folding pocket knife. they are sharper than a razor (sliced my finger pretty good with pocket knife). Bought a gerber but the blade don't hold an edge and the screws come loose. Never buy another from them. Cutco/ Kabar liftime gurentee really sells it for me.
  5. I'm from western ny and there is little to no hunt pressure in my area. what type of calls do I use? I have a primos Lil dog call. is howling good for locating and/ or calling? Would appreciate any help.
  6. Is a .22 win mag good for yotes? If so about how far is the max?
  7. Re: Jakes and Jennies in NY I had a group of 3 jake running around my area, But a couple of hunters called them in and spooked the crap out of them. Rest of the season they became invisible. Couple mature toms but way to many hens down here. Seen a flock of about 30 and one of about 50 running round my area last winter.
  8. Re: Disappointing season I too am from Allegany Co., Clarksville to be exact. There are birds around but I think they got started early because the unusually warm temps in April and ALOT of hens. I'm just looking forward to this fall and spring '07'. Hopefully it will be better.(can't get any worse)
  9. Re: NY-what\'s going on? Turkeygirl, I hunt in the Clarksville area. I think the birds are done and I'll just have to wait til spring 07. The youths in this area had a pretty good season at the end of april.

  11. Re: Game Camera Turkey\'s Nice pics. What kind of camera do you have?
  12. Re: Got one! Nice job. nice bird, Is that the average size of a bird in Jersey
  13. Re: western ny turkeys? Yeah, with the nice weather comming I can atleast get out there and try.
  14. Re: NY-what\'s going on? Here in Allegany county thing have been mostly quiet. Like turkeygirl, it's been really crappy weather so I haven't been out. Last time I was out I seen some hens in a field and had a gobbler bout 80 yrds out but still had hens. 3 jakes came in but ended up joining the tom and his ladies. so I'm hoping the long weekend will be a good one. Good luck everyone!!
  15. Re: western ny turkeys? Well, I think the birds are starting to respond. had some going last week. Seen 3 jakes running around together so maybe I can get a crack at them. Better than nothing.
  16. Re: who hasnt killed a turkey yet? Haven't killed one yet. Had 0ne bout 80 yrds over the ridge but had hens. heard 3 jakes gobbling for 15 min but dissapeared, seen them later in the day in a field 2 ridges over.(hunting ends @ noon in NY). Going out this weekend hope to atleast end my 2 yr dry spell witha jake. or end my bro 6yr with one.
  17. Re: western ny turkeys? still haven't heard anymore birds, but found a strut zone and several dusting holes. sounds like a good setup spot and wait for them to come.
