What changes are you going to make for next bow season?
stcif replied to RangerClay's topic in Bowhunting
Changes - scout more and continue to learn shooting back tension. I think it is the way to go. -
I agree. This was the windiest opener I can remember. The deer moved for the first couple hours of light however and Tyler and I saw 22 deer total. Tyler also drew on what he described as a bigger 8 pointer than he shot last year. He didn't shoot as it was facing him. Tyler then, minutes later, drew back 3 times on the same 1 1/2 year old 8 pointer but after his encounter with the big one he didn't want the smaller one. We quit hunting by 11:00 a.m. I'm hoping to see the big guy today! Despite the wind, it was a great day.

Carbon Express Heritage 250's. 11 GPI, total arrow weight is about 437.

I bought my TC Venture in .308 for well under $500.00 this year. I shot it for the first time last week. Shot accurately enough, but the bolt works hard.

I started shooting feathers on my arrows a couple years ago for a few reasons. First off I learned how to fletch and make my own arrows instead of paying someone else. I also was able to customize them for best arrow flight, strength, etc... In doing this I learned that shooting certain feathers at "compound" speeds creates more noise than shooting Blazers and smaller type synthetic vanes. Feathers, especially something like a 4 or 5 inch "shield" design, "grab" a lot of air, therefore making noise. That is also why a large feather with stabilize an arrow quite well, especially when using larger broadheads. I started using Razyr feathers last year but didn't get good arrow flight. I didn't have enough time to straigten out the issues I was having. Overall, experimenting with different feather cuts can help you find one that is more quiet than others. I think feathers are the way to go and a lot of fun to work with. The feathers I have used make a noticeable noise more so than when I use Blazers. If you are cutting your own arrows using something like the Little Chopper, you can adjust it to cut a smaller height.

I see you are father away from our shoots than I thought. I don't know anybody who shoots out of your club. Good luck though.

I'm not quite sure I believe this story, but it certainly is funny. I shake my head when people ask how we could shoot such a defenseless animal.

Unfortunately it all boils down to money and protecting your investments to make more money. Boring. I think they should pick the all pros, take a picture, and end it. Then again, money can't be made that way.

Congrats on your buck!

Smith and Wesson M&P revolver .357 magnum.

Very nice. I'm still working on mine and would love to have a wood stove like that.

The last few riflescopes I have purchased have been Leupold's and Nikons. Last year though I bought a Pentax Gameseeker for my son's Marlin 30-30 and it appears to be quite a scope for the money. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this scope. I know you get what you pay for and all that, but maybe this scope is an exception to the rule. I am now looking for a scope for my new TC Venture .308. I can get the Gameseeker 3-15x50 for probably less than $150.00.

I'm jealous. I really wanted that same gun and caliber. I "settled" for a TC Venture in .308. I do not think I will be sorry though.

I struck out big this year. Did you get that big boy or what? He's got a cool rack. -
Would you use that scope for waterfowling also? A friend of mine bought a scope made by Barska. Not that one though and he likes it.

I do not know the answer to your question but have you considered having the receiver drilled and tapped for a Weaver style base? If it is the same receiver as an 870 maybe that would be an option for you. It is a solid set up.

Not grouping well?

I saw one of your posts from not too long ago and that along with many other accolades made me choose this gun. Can you tell me what scope you are using? That's a nice group with the Barnes bullet! I know I am going to try the Hornady Superformance 150 grain and Federal Premium with 165 grain Sierra Game Kings, among others. I plan on shooting a bunch of different loads until I can get it shooting the best I can. I want it to be decent 250 to 300 yards or so.

Passed up a bunch of does so far in hopes of getting an 8 I saw last Monday. I also passed on a coyote thinking I would ruin the chance at that buck. Oh well. Maybe I'm being too fusy! -
I don't know anything about that stuff but I would say deer should eat what grows naturally, along with whatever crops they can steal.

The way I have done it is I take chalk and draw a thick line across the tire tread. Drive it around the block. Check to see if the chalk is gone. Inflate until you get it so that the chalk wore off. If it is over inflated the chalk will stay along the edge. I do not think you should go by what is on the vehicle as when the vehicle was made, how do they know what kind of tire you are going to put on? This was how I used to run my old pick up with 35's on them. It allowed the tires to wear even and last the longest possible.

I shoot an 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge. I have a Weaver style base mounted to the receiver. It is solid and doesn't shift or move like some of the "saddle" type mounts do that fit an 870. I use a Leupold 2-7x33 shotgun scope with the heavy reticle. I have done a lot of work on this shotgun to make it as accurate as possible. I have a hastings rilfed barrel which I had "pinned" to the receiver to cut down on vibration and harmonics. I did this work after reading a lot of Dave Henderson's stuff (Shotgunning for deer). I broke a Simmons and Bushnell scope on this gun as the recoil simply destroyed them. No problems with the Leupold and shooting Lighfields it is more accurate than the rifle I currently own. I am not bashing brands and it can be tough spending 250 bucks on a scope. I personally don't see the benefit of a big objective lens on a shotgun scope. I know it would let more light in but your eye can only accept so much light (I believe it is 5 mm exit pupil diameter - no expert here but I have some stuff by G. david Tubb that explains this.) Anyways, good luck. As for going synthetic, I like the looks of wood better.

Nice doe!
