  1. I was at my local Dick's Sporting Goods store today and noticed 12 gauge Remington Copper Solids were 7 bucks a box. That was half price. I do not shoot them, and do not know if it was just a local sale, but I figured I'd pass this info on. If you shoot these you might want to call your local Dick's store.
  2. That was cool. You gotta love a humble hero like that. God bless them all!
  3. Max shot with my 12 gauge would be no more than 100 yards, give or take a few. As to where you should be sighted in, I'm assuming you mean something like, should I be 2" high at 50 yards, etc...? There really is no way to answer this effectively. It depends on what ammo you are using and your set up. I shoot Lightfields and when sighted in 2" high at 50 yards they are about zeroed at 100 yards. If I were you I would re-mount the scope and start from scratch. I shoot a 3 shot group from 25 yards, then 50, then 100. At least this way you will know how the loads you are using work in your gun. I would not go by what people say or what is printed on a box of ammo as gospel. Use that info as a guide then go to the range. Good luck.
  4. How about something in the Savage line? Locally you can get a Savage for 300 on up.
  5. And I didn't hunt this weekend!! I had all last week off and I think I took the wrong week off. Maybe I can squeeze one more vacation day this week before the gun opener.

    deer decoy

Last year I bought the Primos Scarface decoy. First day we used it was during the "chase" phase of the rut and a spike came right in to it. The spike was fixated on the decoy and looked like he wanted to fight it. My son shot the spike (we never found it though). This year the first day I used it was ealier in the rut and a six point saw it at about 60 yards. He almost came out of his skin, snorted and bounded away. He then turned back and looked at it again, snorted once more, and took off. I was using the decoy as a buck, which is a smallish 8 point rack. Today I used it as a doe, but nothing saw it to react. The way I see it is deer have personalities just like people and these personalities change during different times of the year. Decoying simply is hit or miss, but is also a lot of fun. Good luck. And yes, I think deer will come into a target just as fast as a decoy if conditions are right. Question is, what are the right conditions for that deer? A friend of mine told me he had a small buck come up and sniff his Montana decoy, which is very thin. I guess the deer wasn't too concerned with a deer that is paper thin.
  7. Gut shot. Hopefully you can find him in the morning. A lung shot deer shouldn't walk away slowly and shouldn't go 200 yards. Like others have said, could be liver also. Did you find any hair on the ground?
  8. Went out yesterday and weather wise it was a beautiful day. In total I saw a crotch horn, a spike, a six and two eights, plus a bunch of does . One of the eights was what I consider to be a real trophy. Anyways, I watched the two eights spar a little, kind of pushing each other a little. Definitely showed me it was a little early rut wise where I was. The smaller eight made it to within 98 yards of me and I watched him rip up a tamarack tree and make a scrape. After seeing the eights I went and got my Scar Face decoy. I set that up and a little after 5 pm the six point came by. 1.5 year old and that decoy scared the crap out of him. He snorted twice and took off. Funny, last year a spike came right up to it. I know decoying is a hit or miss thing. Hoping to get out some more this weekend.

    Swamp People

It is a good show. That's crazy hunting. What caliber rifles are they using?
  10. The landowner is a jerk, plain and simple. I can clearly understand not wanting people hunting on your own land, but this is nonsense. I have learned the hard way that it is senseless to argue with the senseless. You probably will never get this guy to give in one bit. Pass the word around to everyone what a jerk this guy is. Someday, sometime he will need someone's help. Karma is a you know what. He's probably got an acre of weed growin in there! I have a neighbor like this. He's a jerk just to be a jerk.
  11. 240 grain Sierra jacketed hollow center with a Harvester sabot. Basically a pistol bullet. I've shot one doe. Took two shots as the first was a little off the mark.
  12. Good luck, I wish you the best. Unfortunately money is what drives the decisions in society, be it a business or a politician. If you ever need answers to something just follow the money.
  13. My son and I have owned three Diamonds so far. Quality is very good. I had a 2007 Liberty which I replaced with a 2008 Liberty only because I wanted the 60 pound limbs and a friend wanted to buy my 2007 (70 pound). The Liberty is very smooth and as quiet a bow as I have seen. Not a speed burner, which is not a big deal to me. I always wanted the Black Ice but it was a little too pricey. I have no opinion on the Ice Man as I haven't shot it. One thing I will tell you is that I have sent emails to Diamond and never got replies back. I have been told that Bow tech customer service isn't the best out there. I think that you can find a good bow no matter what the brand. Shoot a bunch of them. Good luck.
  14. Congrats on your buck! He is awesome.
  15. Wow nice buck. He's a 10 pointer to me!
  16. Heading out Sunday morning with the Scar Face decoy. It worked last year. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
  17. Thanks. Western NY ha? I always see deer when I'm out that way. Good luck to you also! What county do you hunt?
  18. Yes. That's what they are designed to shoot through. You can shoot them through a rifled choke tube but the fully rifled barrel is the way to go. My set up is a remington 870 12 gauge with a hastings rifled barrel and a 2-7x33 Leupold scope. At 50 yards I can shoot a 3 shot group where they are all in one ragged hole. Thats good enough for me. Keep in mind they are heavy and they pound you.
  19. I watched it. Words can't describe how I felt. I remember when the story broke. It was sickening. Now to actually see it. Even if it never came out that it was a tame bear, after the shot it would have obvious to any hunter who had ever witnessed a wild bear react to an arrow impact that this bear was not wild. I attribute things done like this to people with absolute out of control egos. They are also people that simply are not willing to do what it takes to take an animal legally. They are not willing to put in the time to practice, scout, drive, sleep in tents, whatever... Troy, I hope someday you read these posts. You are a joke and you lost alot of fans and hopefully money. If I was the judge, you would have lost your liberty too.

    I had a first

The only thing that would have made it o.k. is if you found the guy lying at the bottom of your stand after he fell trying to sabotage it. Kidding aside, I have heard of stands being stolen, but never this. I guess it shouldn't suprise us as people do the craziest, worst things imaginable to one another. Glad you caught it Joe. Another thing to think of.
  21. Well the posts so far kind of summed up what I was going to say. I own a 740 in .308. I like the gun. I shoot Remington Core lokt 150 grain pointed soft points out of it. I do not get MOA. I bet I could get close if I tried different loads and practiced more. MOA is not important to me as I use it for deer hunting, not any type of competition. One thing I noticed on mine is I had to use a medium height scope ring as the shorter rings interfered with the rear rifled sight. I have a Leupold Vari X II 3 - 9 x 40 scope. I think you will enjoy shooting yours as the sentimental value is there. Mine was high school graduation gift from my parents. It was over 30 years old when I acquired it. I hope to bag my first deer with it this season as I have rarely used it due to rifle restrictions where I hunt. Good luck with it.
  22. Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and bought them. I guess I'll know how well I like them very soon.
  23. Nice. Looked like a high hit but I see it was quite an angle. Looks like a perfect shot.
  24. I've been shooting the Lightfields since 1998 and like them. They are heavy.
  25. Thanks. It's fairly warm here this week. Hoping to get back in the woods Friday.
