Another question for you guys that have done multi-day hunts far from home. What did you do with the meat? I plan on loading up the truck bed with multiple coolers. Figure if we get something early on I will just leave the meat on ice with the drain open so the water constantly drains out and will keep putting new ice in. Will this work for days at a time before getting home and processing it?

I cant hold out any longer and decided to start a thread of my upcoming adventure with Steve B. After a few years of getting to know everyone on RT, seeing and reading about hunts with Steve B and asking, Steve invited myself to come and do a hunt with him. While talking with him, he said to invite a buddy with me so I would have someone to hunt with incase he could not make it out a day or two while I was there. The first and most important person to come to mind was my Father. He started taking me hunting when I was 3 and did everything in his power to get me in front of deer and have the chance to see them. So, it was an easy choice to invite him to come along. Growing up in North and South Carolina, all we have ever hunted was whitetails so this hunting out West thing is totally new and different for me. Ever since reading Dakotas thread about his hunt for speed goats I knew I wanted to hunt them one day and now is the time. After calling around and getting permission to hunt some places in Wyoming Dad and I applied for our tags, One deer tag and one Antelope tag a piece. Results come back and Dad and I got our deer tag but did not draw a goat tag. Let down.... After many more talks with other forum members and Steve we put in for a left over goat tag and got them. Then realized we will have way better luck in another unit so we applied again and got a second tag for both of us. So, Dad and I both have 1 deer tag and two goats tags. Thats a lot of tags to fill in a week. haha. So, anyhow, finally got the tags squared away and after a couple of "No's" from ranchers we secured a place to hunt and are good to go. This weekend I will be getting everything ready and will have some sleepless nights. I will be leaving Friday morning around 3am to drive to Gillette and meet Dad at the airport around 4:30 pm when his flight arrives. Meet up with Steve and hopefully a Rancher or two to get a game plan for the week. Thinking we will deer hunt the first couple of days and try and get Dad and myself our first muleys and then spend the rest of the time chasing goats. So, there's my long intro to our hunt coming up in 8 days. I will keep this updated with pics and post to kind of keep a journal of our first "out west" 4 legged animal hunt.

Great story and congrats on the goats!

Foiles calls are going for cheap right now.....If you dont care about the name, then I would look at them. I use 5 of their duck calls and 3 goose calls. I have blown everything I have put my hands on and cant make myself get away from the Foiles sound. Price wise, they are high but you can tell a difference between high end and low end calls. With all his crap going on, you can find some smoking deals on them. I carry around 750 bucks around my neck when I hunt and I dont think one bit that I paid too much or that I am crazy for spending that money. Too each their own but there is a huge difference in calls out there.

270 in whatever flavor you like. I love my A-bolt 270 and have killed tons of deer in NC and SC with it. If I was buying a new mid range deer rifle right now, I would get the TC Venture in a 270. I zeroed one in for a guy that had no idea what he was doing and the first 4 shots out of the gun at 100 yards were sub MOA with 3 of the 4 stacking holes. I was amazed. I got the scope sighted in and you could drive tacks with it. I only got to shoot out to 150 yards with the gun and at that range with a 5 shot group it was 1.15" groups. He had a 2x9 on it so I wasnt expecting much past 100. Anyhow, its a dang good shooting gun. Also, can you use any round as long as its in pistol form? If so, look at TC and see what cals they make. I know they have a 308 pistol.....

Nice! edit: There's two, that I know of, in Texas within an hour or two of Corey. I miss one of them

First- if you want him and have the chance to take him do it! Nothing wrong with killing any deer that you want to kill. Second- This is a true statement. On my hunting land I have 3 cameras set up. I have sat on the porch of the cabin over looking my food plot, water holes and feeder and had a 50" bull moose come in at dusk, walk all through the field, lay down to drink and spent 1.5 hours in the field. There was a camera on the field and the trail that he walked in on and walked out of the field on. I have ZERO picutres of him. I have also seen 2 nice 8 pts with my eyes that I have ZERO pictures of. I dont know how animals do it, but they can avoid a camera and not get their pictures taken like they know its there. I know the cameras are set perfectly since I get pics of other deer on them in the middle of the frame and even pics of other moose. But the big ones vanish somehow. I only have one shooter buck on camera this year and he showed up for 4 hours on camera a month ago and havent seen him since.

No luck for me this weekend. I actually flew to Colorado Friday and drove back to here Saturday and Sunday. Going through wyoming and montana I saw a TON of antelope and deer which made me excited for my hunt next week. I might try and get out tomorrow night around the house on some public land for a close to home muley.

A month ago I found a place loaded with deer and a nice herd of Elk. Marked it on the GPs, went back the next weekend to check on all of them since season was coming. That weekend I saw a cougar in the exact spot as the elk, 2 bears and a wolf within a mile radius. Did not see a single deer or elk and havent since then. Cougars will drive the game away BUT I have also experienced cougars not driving game away as well. On one of my hunting partners cam we have pics of deer all week, then a cougar on Sunday and the following week all the same deer showed up. So, who knows what will happen there. I would kill that thing if you see him, period.

It's a turtle with really long legs and a small shell. You can even see its wide turtle tail!

When does your deer season open? Do you have a cougar season? When does it open? Did DNR tell you to kill them?

Goodluck buddy. Acorns all the way.

There is a lot of stuff in that store that I would still pay money for soaking wet.

Yeah, I'm hoping I can get it done in Wyoming. My first priority is getting Dad on a deer and then me. We also have two antelope tags each as well, so hopefully we can get everything filled in the 8 days there. The heat killed me this weekend. Last weekend is was high of mid to upper 60s and lows in the mid 30s. This past weekend the highs with in the upper 90s and lows in the 60s. It was horrible and shut the deer down.

I do have one more weekend to hunt this early season, but I will be out of town this weekend and cant make it up to the hunting land during the week with work. So, my early season for him is done. Which sucks, but then again, maybe the late season with the snow and rut happening will bring him in or one of his brothers.

Those brows are sweet! I want to see you holding that rack!

September Velvet in IL, mature or not quite?
92xj replied to layin on the smackdown's topic in Photography & Video
Its a great looking deer buddy. The width looks greater when he's running away because he has his ears pegged back listening towards you. The width is better guessed while hes looking at you. Either way, he's a monster in my book and looks to be very mature with great mass and tines. Get him! -
Cool deal Steve. Keep posted up those videos and pictures. Very enjoyable! Miss you 'round these parts.

If time allows, I'm going to try and run out to some public land tomorrow afternoon or wednesday and try and tag a muley. If not, my next deer hunting will be in Wyoming with Steve B. the first of October for 8 days.
