Thanks. Yard's full of red oaks, I leave them on the ground till the wife makes me get them up, lol... And the kids are fine now they have a yel female to play with, though she aint nearly as pretty a dog as the choc, they dont mind.
-
Was just browsing my mem card and found these. My choc lab got ran over just before Christmas, causing Santa to have to scramble to find a new one on Christmas eve. We'll miss that big brown dog. You guys think they're twins? heheheee

OK, here's one i killed on christmas day. Almost got the skull clean. Question is, using buckmasters scoring, how do you decide where to take the circumference measurements at?

Beautiful country, never made it up that way.

Great pics, mike.

I figured you did some time down here to be sporting that avitar. And yeah, the ppl i know in the booneville area and north through tishimingo would bust a bear in a second, regrettable as it is. I can email some images of some MS State stuff just in case you couldnt find any.....:D:D
-
Ha! Shooting a bear in this state would land you just shy of life w/o parole. I hope they do well, would be nice to see one once in a blue moon while hunting.
-
Yeah, you can see him here too, at my neighbor's feeder. But the four ppl that i know of that got pics of him havent had one going on a year. Mostly males around here roaming through the state. Here he is again (we think its the same) http://mdwfp.com/Level2/Wildlife/Game/Bear/Articles.asp?article=581

Well I should have clarified a bit. I would LOVE to go to Canada, Alaska, Idaho, WY, CO, etc, etc, and hunt every animal known to man.....BUT...I'm kinda on a more restricted budget, so the sky aint the limit. Was just thinking about a DIY that i could afford to do every couple of years from now on. And yeah, i'd like to take one of every big game animal one day, right now just seeing the beauty of the west, and just hunting something different would be a blast. Daddy went out to CO a few years ago and drew an elk tag but didnt have any luck. I just want to spend some time out there with him, and not break the bank in the process. And btw, flyerla, that bear hunt sounds great, but i gotta plan out a little further in the future, but may PM you later about it. Bet that's gotta be a haul from down here in ms. Dakota, I never thought of SD as an antelope state. Guess i need to get out more. hehehe.... Thanks as always guys.... I'll bump this thread as I do more reading on these draws and units.
-
Thanks, guys, that sounds great. I'll look into that. Anyone have any special area they liked? Or should i just google the public lands in WY?
-
Yeah, the sheds would've been better to find. Who knows how they die, sure cant tell when they're like that.
-
Thanks, TT. By the way guys (idiot here), what's a unit? is that like a zone? Like you pull it up on a map, and has different limits and such for diff parts of the state?

Hey guys, need some input here. I'd like to take a trip with my dad out west. Honestly I have no preference for game, Anything from Elk, Muleys, Antelope, doesnt matter. I just want to enjoy some time hunting out west before he gets too old to want to go. I'd like some opinions as to good places to go, public land, where we'd likely see some great scenery and hopefully some animals. I guess the state's liklihood of us drawing tags is a factor too. I know nothing about that. What's the preference point system?

They are an extremely rare sight down here. I saw my first one last year. They've tried to transplant a few in some areas down south in recent years. Hopefully some redneck wont shoot them. Did I say that out loud?
-
Yeah, i'm keeping it for this year, see if it can redeem itself. I'm going to 3" too. I killed turkeys from the time i was a kid till just about 3 yrs ago with 2 3/4", why i thought i needed a 3.5 i'll never know. Besides, that thing will rattle your teeth.

Yeah, got one

Well said, Tominator....well said

Great pics! Love the bear laying down with the deer and apples. -
Was that the same place your wife's uncle told you about? Maybe he was on something after all
-
Sweeeet pic!!! I didnt see anything close to that caliber this year.

Yep, i just looked at the log. Most i saw was on Dec 12th, Friday afternoon. Had three 8's, one 10pt, 6 does, 3 spikes in one field (a lot for us, and yeah i've hunted them places where you can count 28 deer in a field). I took the biggest bodied 8, scored a bit over 105". The next day i took my girls to another pc of property, and saw 12 deer including a decent 8pt, but couldnt get my nine yr old to calm down enough to make the shot, so we let them walk......

I know to most of you in some states, its no biggie, but down here in MS, this is rare, although several have been sighted in the last couple of years.
-
As always, Rhino never ceases to impress me... My general thoughts, it's overrated. Weather, rut, and approaching fronts do more to move deer than a moon phase. Generally, i dont like hunting as much in full moon phases, and have always thought deer tended to move more during the middle of the day during this time, but i never documented it like Rhino, though we do keep a log of all sightings at the camp, but mainly for ratio, body weight, deer count studies, not hunting methodology. Also, most importantly to me, if you only hunt days that are the best conditions, then you won't hunt very much, at least not in this state where we have Dec-Jan days into the 80's. I hunt every opportunity i can, and have killed some of the biggest bucks on some of the worst days. Just hunt till your wife starts giving you that look, then get the leaves out of the yard, and go again....

"As of 5/6/08, corn is not even a legal choice for baiting a trail cam set anymore if you're pouring it out on the ground. IMHO that part is a little silly. Very few hunters with trail cams know that. It's one of those "read in between the lines" things. " Actually, Rhino, I think you dont have to read between the lines too much. I'm just not taking it to that level. If someone wants to catch me puring out a total of 2 bags a year that stays on the ground less than 36 hours, i guess they can just get the ticket book out. Baiting a trail cam isnt essential, but some locations it really helps.....esp if there isnt actually a "trail" hahaha..
