  1. Oh yeah, and do you put nocks on those things? Shoot with a release? Is it ok to leave it strung up for a week or more at a time, or should you take the string off every time? Questions, questions, questions........

    Stick Bows

OK, i'm still pretty new, and i see we dont have a traditional bow forum, so instead of pestering JimPic with a zillion questions (which i'm sure he doesnt mind) i thought i would post here for all to read. Here's what i'm wondering. I got this beautiful hand made longbow, 68", 60lb draw, that i've had for years and never really hunted with it much, and i won in an archery jamboree. Jim is helping me out with a string (lost the old one). What speeds do these bows reach? What are sensible ranges to ethically take shots? What arrows/broadheads do most traditional hunters use? I got a new bow this year, took 2 does and an 8pt in the first few weeks with it...but that stick keeps calling me..... I'm making it a mission to take my first deer with it this year.
  3. Man, you had a great year! I just cant help it, i got to go the last weekend at least once. Dont know if i'll take my bow or 45-70, or if my girls want to try to kill one this year. I'm with you on the birds. I cant wait till march to hear some gobbles. I just hope out of all the countless hens i saw this year they'll drag in a few gobblers. In the meantime it's running rabbits, and hopefully with some rain to put the creek up a bit i'll pull out a few blues out of my favorite hole. But this is one of the best times in the year to do some scouting. 2 Bucks in the 140's.......WOW! Congrats again!!
  4. Dude, that's a horse!! what did he weigh? Wish we grew 'em down here like that.
  5. Just two more days to hunt for a lot of us. I personally haven't been seeing much of anything lately. Seems like I can't pay a deer to step into a food plot last few evenings I've been. Any of you guys pulling a rabbit out of your hat over the next couple of days? I'm thinking of just trying something....anything different. I had a great year, just last few weeks have been disappointing. Oh well, I always look forward to getting the dogs to chase some bunnies in Feb, about as fun as deer hunting.
  6. Double-A you are waaaaaay above my head. And yeah, i can see my wife stuffing sausage out on the carport with me...... I'm the redneck, not her.....lol
  7. I shot 2213s for years and years. didnt make the switch till last year when i got a new bow. Nothing wrong with aluminum, but carbons take bending better. I did shoot 2 deer this year though that the arrow broke as it passed through the deer. Rarely had that with alum arrows, they were more likely to bend on pass-through than break, but probably just coincidence. I may change my mind on the subject after a few more seasons. If you like your alum, then keep 'em
  8. Wait did I hear deer balogna? Do tell.....my heart skipped a beat.... Is that like the summer sausage variety?
  9. You dont need that much Sam16. A good sharp knife, a cutting board, and a grinder will take you a long long ways. I kill about 5-6 a year on avg and usually i take about 3 to process and do the others myself. It's nice to get someone else to do your smoked sausage unless you got more time than i got to stuff and smoke. It does save you a lot of money. Actually, just deboning saves a lot. I killed a buck this year that weighed 165, we ate one backstrap at the camp for supper, then deboned the entire deer. My bill was just over a hundred bucks for one half ground burger, one quarter smoked saus, and one quarter jalepeno and cheese saus. Now, i promise you if i'd left the bone in, i'd paid over 150 bucks, cuz your paying for bone in weight when you take it to process, and you'd be amazed how much weight in bone they are going to throw out. So yes, you can save a big chunk over the years without even buying a grinder, but pick one up and i think you'll find it easy and satisfying if you have a little time.
  10. Hey Michael!!! Thanks for some great shows. I heard you were in my backyard this year over at Mckenna ranch here in MS, do any good?
  11. OK, just kinda alongside this conversation i did a google search on mr hamilton and found some posts on bowsite.com. i of course had to register (is there a forum on the net to support ppl that are in too many forums?)....anywho...i sent a PM to a guy that i think owns one, and maybe he can shed some light on this situation as well. Apparently Mr. hamilton made at least a few of these. I won't put down my compound, but it's a shame that i never even killed a doe in all these years with such a beautiful bow.
  12. OK, here's what i got: 68" Scorpion 58# at 28" N1071 by M.R. Hamilton I aint got a clue where to start. I won it as a grand prize at the Miss bowhunter's jamboree years ago. I didnt hunt with it but one season, a few years later, and somehow i lost the string. I contacted Ms bowhunters assn, and they dont remember anything about it, probably was about 14 years ago. Thanks for the help. john
  13. I have shot muzzy for years, and i dont have any regrets, i just always had reservations on mechanicals. But looking at so many rage kill pics, i think i wanna try em out next year.
  14. When i bought my 2000 Z71 in 03 it was 20k and payments about 450 a month. It was spotless, and never had been in 4WD. Now that i have it it's covered in mud and seals leaking because of places i put it into. I'll never pay that much again for a truck. I always buy used cars, but next truck will be more used than that one, hahah.... Let someone else get more depreciation off of it, cuz in a couple of years it will look just like any other one out there, esp if you use it like i do.
  15. If you're just a casual varmint hunter, try a mouth call. Lots of people have called in animals with them, and i have a couple in my bag i keep just in case the situation calls for it. Me and daddy were turkey hunting years ago when a pack started howling and the birds shut up. He took his mouth call and stuck it way back in his mouth and let loose like a rabbit. Five minutes later one dog was on the ground and another had a load of 4 shot in his butt.
  16. And stick with the .243.... you'll need it to bring down dogs at long range, they're tougher than they look. I shot one years ago trotting at about 175 yards and picked up pieces of brisket and bone for 100 yards. I later saw the coyote bow hunting next season missing a front leg, and saw her once more in gun season. A .22 mag is a bit light for anything but a close head shot IMHO
  17. Fast flight and dacron?.....that just went over my head. As for lenght, i'll have to measure it, but i'd estimate about 6'. The weight is 58# at 28". Like i mentioned the bow is hand made, very beautiful, i tried to find something on the guy that made it but couldnt.
  18. Down here in MS, we have permits for those 65 and over or if you have a letter from your doc stating a health reason. I personally think they are great and am against requiring permits for their use, but prefer the things be used outside the regular bow season.

    Which side?

I agree, i always like to stay above them. Remember your shots are a bit different for the same yardage at a steep angle, so you may want to take a few practice shots from the stand in the off season.
  20. ps....-what is "coleslaw mix"??....can it be found in every store? Yeah, it's basically the mayo, pickle relish, onion mixture you just spoon into shredded cabbage. Not nearly as good as homemade.
  21. I dont think anything good would come of it. Come up with a way to slide the mesh aside to take your shot.
  22. I gotta go to a hog killin to get that image out of my head!!
  23. Thank you! you can just pm me if you want or post it here for others to benefit if they need a string made.
  24. Who makes custom strings? I got a beautiful custom longbow i won years ago and lost the string. The guy i used to know that made them now has health problems. I have no idea where to even start.
  25. That is neat. My dad had a spinal cord injury and lost a lot of strength afterward. He put a draw-loc on his bow, and felt really self-conscious about using it, and quit bowhunting altogether. I think this year, i'm getting him a razor edge from diamond, because of a huge draw weight adjustment. But this may work also. Anything that helps those with challenges enjoy the sport is A+ in my book.
