Re: Bill Winke - Take the first good shot I agree with the first good shot and the experience of the shooter will determine that shot. A deer coming in at any angle will sometime or another pose a killing shot. I've taken deer quartering to, quartering away, straight under, and broadside. Practice and studying a deer anatomy will be so beneficial to a hunter. Stan Potts is a good example of taking a good shot, with his 200+ inch deer taken a few years back. He knew it wasn't a great shot to take, but it was a good killing shot for him and his experience to take, which he felt very confident taking. Just my opinion-If the shot comes, I'm taking it.

Re: Chain on treestands Too funny- listening to all the opinions here. I just switched from straps to a chain. I got tired of fighting with getting the strap tight, a T-bolt, and having to work from the same side of the tree all the time. I sold my API last year and got an Ole Man Roost. That was the smartest thing I ever did for a loc-on stand. This stand is so conveinent to hang. The chain slides from one side to the other, so it's not a hassle to decide which side of the tree to climb so you can work the buckle or the racket strape. Just my opinion though- I'm glad I made the switch. Just a note, I've hunted with API loc-on's for 12 years before I switched, so I've got some experience with the strap. My neighbor always told me that straps are for bra's. LMBO

Re: Gold Tip weight system? You can get the Goltip nibbs from Goldtip or a GT dealer. They have screw-in weights with no adapters needed.

Re: Oh the smell I know your pain Tony. I was on a 30 target course last wekend and it was a circuit shoot. I was 5 points over on the 23rd target and had a mental breakdown or in laymen's term- a brain-fart! I ended up shooting six 8's on the last seven targets. It was still a good score coming off that course, but it really stinks to be up like that and walk through a pile of it-stanken up the whole place! LOL Shake it off and come back strong on the next one.

Re: 3-D Target Cards That's to funny this post came up. We were just talking about how no one hardly uses these any more. They are great for a begiiner shooter, but witht he ever changing styles, target animals and manufacturer's. You'd have to have a truck load of cards to keep up. A good set of bino's will suffice just fine. Example- Rhinehart targets have a blue million rings on them. I think it would be hard to determine if it was a road map or a reference card for a target, with all the scorings rings on the card. Good luck and keep practicing.

Your first bowkill...When, where and about....
Straight Shooter replied to ParsonsOutdoors's topic in Bowhunting
Re: Your first bowkill...When, where and about.... It was the fall of 1994 in Selma, Ala. and I was on a one week bow hunt with 9 other guys. I was the only one out of the 10 that hadn't killed a deer with a bow. The first morning at 6:05, a I heard a snap and looked to see a buck standing at 27 yards. I stood and drew. Released the arrow and hit a branch. The arrow went right over his back. I thought I'd poop! LOL To my amazement, the buck started walking towards me and right under my stand. He stopped at 8 yards and I was all ready redrawn waiting on him. My 2115 Easton tipped with a 100 grain Muzzy, piled him up right there, after a shot between the shoudler blades struck home. I tried to do the dance, but my legs were like rubber and had to sit for the next 30 minutes before I could get down. That was my first bow kill and my first buck, I look at that buck everyday now(I got it mounted), it's not a monster 6 pointer. But, it holds some great memories for me. I killed a doe out of the same stand the next morning at 6:05. -
Re: Chipmunks with a bow Amen, brother! Hammer down on those little rodents. We've got them like worms here in the mountains of NC. They'll build a nest in anything around here. My brother had one pile a bunch of dog food in the carborator of his Isuzu, causing it not to run. Pellet guns or bows, it's great practice. Great shot!

Problem with my Little Bitty Goose 3003NCS
Straight Shooter replied to struttinhoyt's topic in Target Archery
Re: Problem with my Little Bitty Goose 3003NCS I've got two of the lil bitty goose's and those screws are a 1/16-32 or a 1/16-38 thread. I'd say your best bet would be to get one from Scott archery or take the release to a hardware store and let one of those guys match it up. You don't want to cross thread it and maybe perminately damage the trigger threads. Good luck. -
Re: let the Bashing begin... Yep, we've received post that Realtree.com is the place to go for good clean fun and info. It's not just in the bowhunting room but all of the Mod's do a great job in here. Someof us longtimers on here have seen everything or anything that could happen on here. We hold tried and true to that great one above us, "Scott Hughes"! LOL Keep up the great work guys!

Re: 6 elk today!! [broadhead experement] Hammer down and Git R Done, Sureshot! I'd love to have the oppertunity you've got on the elk. My question is, why not video tape the culling of the elk? It would be some great footage to watch and learn from the hits and actions of the elk.

Re: Bow tune up I wouldn't worry to much about the bow itself. Do like these guys have said, make sure your string is in good shape. Being a year old, I would think it is still in good shape. Just make sure your getting good arrow flight, this is a tell tell sign something has moved or loosened up. Check all bolts and screws, make sure they're snug and tight. Number one, keep practicing! Good luck on your hunt in Texas, give us an update when you get back.

Re: Pope and Young Club In that case, "Yes", I am a member and I know about the dues going up this year. Excuse me if I didn't say I was member, it took me 9 years of bowhunting to get into the books. I do how ever plan on staying a member of the P&Y club, even if I don't take any more record animals.
-
Re: Groundhog problem Sounds like some great bowhunting practice to me. Put down the gun and use a bow from the terrace. If it's only about 30 yards to the holes, that's perfect.
-
Re: Pope and Young Club I got in with my 132 gross, 129 2/8 net, 10 point I got in 2003. Yes, it's not just for big bucks only as stated. It's any of the 28 big game animals of North America. Also, you can't just pay your dues and join. It's a club you got to make by taking a record book animal, P&Y or B&C club. Then pay your dues to stay a member. The regular member is one who take 3 different big game species, and the senior member is someone tkaing 5 big game species.

Re: ??????????? Bowhunters???????? I'm ready for it to open today! LOL I'll be hunting here in NC, Take a trip for a week to Ohio, and trying to line up a hunt in Indiana.

Re: treestand heights.... 20 feet minimum, unless it's not possible in the area and tree I'm hunting in.

Re: which is better? Very well said PA! I was rattling things around my brain as I was reading the prior post, of the same things you just stated.

Most new bow strings have a twist of at least 5 in them to start out with. You may need to twist it more after you shoot it. The string will stretch and make yor nock point move up, so plan on adjusting it a couple of times before everything settles in.

Re: Pin yardage for 3-D? My pins are set from 20 to 50 yards. Even in IBO tourneys, your not shooting over 50 yards max. If your a field shooter, you'll need a movable or pins set out to 80 yards at least. If you shot enough and learn how to play the pin gap, it can be even more beneficial than a slide bar with one pin.

Re: When you are shooting 3-D or Indoor.... I'm shooting 3" vanes on my Goldtips for 3-D touorney's

Re: ATTENTION...All Brand Bashers.... If it's got "Who shoots?" , "VS." or "Which is better", in the topic. It's going to be a bashing session. It gets quit aggrevateing to hear grown men whining on who's is better, bigger, and faster. It really doesn't matter as long as the one who owns it or is going to buy, is happy with what they've got. No one is an idiot, moron, or anything less if you don't own what someone else has got. For now on, if it starts to get the slightest bit out of hand, consider the post gone. This is fair enough warning for everyone, we are all sportsman and outdoor enthusiest. Let's try acting like it.

Re: new pics of my 9 point!!!! Beautiful buck, Muff! Congrats on a great harvest. One tip, don't push the issue on the crossbow vs. compound. A subject like that can get ugly in here very quick. I agree with the others, if it's a legal means of harvesting an animal, then by all regards, USE IT. It just won't qualify for P&Y, is the only difference in taking it with a bow or crossbow. Once again, Congratulations!

Re: 7mm08 I guess I'm a man shooting a womans caliber. LOL I've hunted with a 7mm-.08 for years now. It's absolutely a great round for deer. If you know anyone who reloads, they can get the right pwoder in there and cut down on the recoil. I'm shooting hot loads and it still doesn't have alot of recoil. You can drop down to a 120 grain bullet and get a good shooting gun.
