  1. Re: Buckmasters They did that to my dad about 5 years ago.Called him and told him about thier magazine, all the free crap they send with it and some insurance for your guns or something. He was actually interested but wanted to see some more info on the insurance and what all came with the package. They agreed to send him some info on it but instead they sent him a magazine and a bill for over 100$.Couple months later they turned it over to collections.Took quite awhile to get it straightened back out
  2. Re: how fast of winds will you hunt in Ill hunt in most any winds. If its not safe to be in a tree Ill set up on the ground in a protected area.Seems like the deer I see when the winds blowing hard are very jumpy and theres many that dont move at all till it dies down again.
  3. Re: who all goes to there stands without a flashlight I usually dont even bother going in till first light, I figure Ill scare as many deer stumbling around in the dark or waving a flashlight through the woods as I would just walking in carefully at sunrise.Ive even killed deer on the way into my stand using this approach I never would have seen from the stand.
  4. Re: Tennessee youth hunt Sounds like time well spent.Hope she gets a shot at him, good luck to both of you
  5. Re: hunting privelages STOLEN! Legally!! Wally, I dont know your whole story apparently and thats ok.Dont take what Im about to say wrong, Im not failiar with PA game laws so I might be off base here. We have a lot of grey areas in our state game laws here, most states do.By using vauge definitions some laws are often left open to the arresting officer to decide if youve broken the law or not.Baiting laws are often in the grey area. For instance if your story happened here you would indeed be guilty of hunting near bait if one of your stands is within so many feet of a bait pile.It may not sound right but its the hunters responsibility to make sure theres nothing in that radius that could be considered bait.If the bait pile was on the nieghbors property the officer was under no obligation to tell anyone but the nieghbor that it was there.I personaly dont like this law because it leaves a lot of room for error, if you had crossed the property line to look at the area you would have been tresspassing{if you didnt have permission}, but if the nieghbor doesnt let you look you can be guilty of baiting, its a bad situation.I gueese what Im saying is you could be guilty on nothing more then a technicality and not even realize it, it happens more then you might think. If you plan to take this any further then getting your licenses back you better make positively sure that theres no way you could be considered to be hunting illegaly, its a tricky thing sometimes when the laws are vauge and theres more then one property involved.Good Luck.

  7. Re: Seen a black cat/mountain lion. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Tony why is Scheels trying to prove they exist?Guesse Im confused because theyres been several run over, shot, or otherwise documented by the DNR in Iowa in recent years. They were tracking one around here last year I believe and he was spotted several times, the DNR confirmed the tracks were from a cougar, and he finally just moved on to somewhere else or got real good at hiding out after a couple weeks. They had one sitting in trees in peoples yards in Sioux City they had to put down.I wouldnt think there could be much debate left about thier existence in Iowa, just how many there actually are. [/ QUOTE ] Wildlife departments are odd about that sort of thing. I think it may keep hunters from going after them if they deny their existence in the state (or they may believe that anyway). The state of Oklahoma denied them to a degree for years. They cropped up here and there and everyone knew they were around (to some degree). Finally they just put in the regulations that it was illegal to kill one. [/ QUOTE ] I think its more than keeping hunters from going after them. After the first reports of them in an area everbody and thier grandma starts calling reports in of sightings. Most turn out to be something else, yellow labs, coyotes, strange things that you ordinarily wouldnt confuse with a large cat. They just get flooded with reports they dont have the manpower to investigate. Iowas DNR has confirmed there here, held public meetings on thier existance in the state, seen the dead ones and documented tracks and hair samples from others. They even tried to pass a law protecting them which didnt go through.Thats why I dont understand the "prove they exist" part On another note twice in the last year Ive found big cat tracks in a large unsettled public area north of town here.I looked em up and found out theyre bobcat tracks, They arent supposed to be in the area either but theres one running around up there.I didnt report it, I had friends along both times that seen em, but the last thing I needed was a bunch of guys trying to kill the thing where Im trying to deer hunt.Seemed pointless to me to even draw attention to it I guesse

    POACHERS

Re: POACHERS I can see a far worse case scenario then the landowner shooting a poacher. Here we have a law that if you have a wounded animal that crosses the property line you can go after them if you do it without a weapon.Suppose the landowner shot a guy that was trying to recover a legally shot deer instead of a poacher. It just sets a bad precedent not to impose some sort of punishment on him, Im not saying the poachers were in the right but what the landowner did could have far greater consequences. If people start taking the law into thier own hands it makes the sport a lot more dangerous for everyone.
  10. Re: Sunday Hunting I think theres a bigger picture to look at then the religous one.The arguent seems to come down to to 2 sides, the hunters perspective and the landowners perspective.A lot of landowners that let people in as Strut pointed out have people on there property 6 days a week already, and a lot of them being farmers are very busy in the fall.Sunday for them might be the only day they have out of the fields to spend with thier family, friends or whatever.Id imagine having people driving in and out, shooting guns and knocking on the door would be quite disruptfull to them. On the other hand a lot of hunters also work 5 or 6 days a week and only have one or two days to hunt.If they dont own property or have access to public ground as many dont they rely on the good nature of these landowners to let them in. Personally I think its something that could be worked out between the landowner and hunter without having it mandated by the state. In a lot of cases these guys own land thats not connected to the house and can be accessed without bothering them.If they dont want you hunting Sundays for religous, personal reasons then a hunter should be able to respect that.If a hunters a dedicated chuch going man he will be in church regardless of this law.
  11. Re: How did I ever survive being a kid? The more I think about it the more positive I become that these games should be for kids only, if I tried playing STQ now Id likely wind up hospitalized.Maybe they should just make it illegal for adults to play
  12. Re: The Ditches Say, The Rut Is On. Ive noticed it as well, seems like theres certain spots around here that only hold deer when theyre getting ready to start rutting and I seen a dead buck in one such location 2 days ago, dead 6 pointer laying right on the city limits outside of town.Wont be long now.
  13. Re: How did I ever survive being a kid? [ QUOTE ] yep i remember playing dodgeball in like 3rd grade we used to use the big rubber balls [/ QUOTE ] I remember those, they hurt but it was incentive not to get hit with one Smeer the queer was always fun, we got the ball taken away once in awhile but it mostly for calling people queers and had little to do with the fact there were 12 guys trying to kill the one with the ball. Sadly if you think this lawsuit crazy era is bad wait till these kids grow up and have kids of thier own.The more sheltered they are now the worse its gonna get in the future, nobody can touch anyone, nobody gets thier feelings hurt, no dicipline.Theres gonna be a lot of sissies growing up that think they can get by with whatever they want, dont believe me, ask thier lawyers
  14. Re: Five Year Gun Control Plan Anyone who votes for someone based on party lines is a fool IMO.I looked the other day at the NRAs report cards for the state I live in, there were many democrats that ranked higher than republicans as far as supporting gun rights.Do your homework on both individuals and vote accordingly, dont believe every websight you read that has a scare tactic aimed at getting you to vote for the party of thier choice.JMPO, take it for what its worth.
  15. Re: Costco Bans Guns I read the story, and the letter Costco sent to him.I gotta say I cant see where Costco did anything wrong and it seems like they handled the incident professionaly and respectfully.Even the letter was very polite and included the fact they were a private club, not a public place. They returned his money, offered to refund his dues, Im not sure what more the guy wants, nobody made him walk around the store with his gun hanging out.

    Labeling

Re: Labeling Good post Wtn.Ive pretty much stopped posting in the political room here alltogether because of this very reason, and i see it in a lot of other sites as well.If you have a different opinion then the popular mindset in these places its all but impossible to carry on a intelligent conversation before the labels start flying and your branded as a liberal, homo, racist, pacifist, or any of a million other catch phrases that are rampant in todays world.Drag religion into the mix and it makes the problem much worse.Instead of sharing thoughts, ideas, and opinions people often resort to labeling anyone that has a opinion different from thier own.Its very difficult to find anyone that can stay open minded in the face of partisanship, demoninations, races, political correctness, and differing cultures.Im just as guilty as anyone else in doing this but Im trying to get past it and accept the fact everyones going to view things differently. One belief or opinion doesnt make someone something thier not.
  17. Re: How many Mr. MoM dads do we have here? Ive got the 3 kids about 4 days a week or more while the wifes at work 3 hours away. I get up about 5:30-6:00 and make my coffee, play on the computer awhile then at 7:00 I get the older 2 up, go through thier school bags, get them dressed, comb thier hair, and get em off to school by 8:00.Then I start getting the little one dressed, diaper bag packed, take him to daycare, and goto work.Pick em back up at the babysitters around 5:00, make sure homeworks done, cook em dinner, get them all baths, go over thier homework, make sure everythings packed back up for the next morning, and try to get em to bed before 9:00.Also I am the chauffer for after school activiies, soccer, girl scouts, football, baseball, etc... Its not easy being a single mother
  18. Re: I want to strangle my new drafting manager..... I had a foreman like that one time, great guy till he started going through a divorce, child custody, etc...He couldnt leave his problems at home and became a real pain in the butt, it got so he was endangering people with his actions at work. Finally one day after he put me 60 ft in the air in the basket of a crane to trim a job out in the middle of an ice storm when the windchill was -30 I had enough, I told them I wanted put on another crew, they refused, I quit.People like that arent worth wasting your time on.
  19. Anyone ever seen a coyote crossed with a dog in the wild?. A couple days ago I was in my stand and seen a coyote come out and start hunting mice about 200 yrds from me.Only thing was it was bigger then my lab is and almost black in color.I just about passed it off as a wild dog but then walking out I seen one of her pups from this year hunting in the fenceline by my truck, it looked just like a young coyote but wasnt very scared of anything, it was actually very curious about my truck, theres dried deer blood all the way down the side and on the tailgate and the youngster was circling my truck and stopping repatedly right by the back bumper. It did this for about 10 minutes while I sat about 70 yrds away watching. It finally noticed me sitting there and took off up towards where the older one had been hunting a few minutes earlier. Its the first time Ive seen such a thing and wasnt sure if Id correctly Identified the bigger one, wish Id have been a little closer.
  20. Re: anybody combining corn yet?? Some of the farmers around here started doing corn this week, the rest are hitting the beans pretty hard, by the end of the month there shouldnt be much left.
  21. Re: FYI-Long but It Might Save Someone\'s LIFE! Thats sad.I can almost see why kids think its harmless, like someone else mentioned, people have inhaled helium forever just for a laugh and I personally wouldnt have ever guesses that a can of compressed air was anything but that, just comprssed air.Of course Id have never guessed you could get high from it either, that should be a pretty good clue its not just air.Think Ill have a chat with my kids tonight about playing with it
  22. Re: Lots of \"inactive\" Realtree forum members Illl check into it and see if theres a reason some of those acounts are still available.I know some people dont post but just come in to read the forums but that does seem like a lot of wasted space, never realized there were that many inactive accounts.
  23. Our youth season opened a week ago.Austin, my 11 year old and I started off with high hopes, I knew where 3 huge bucks were at, gained permission for 3 properties, set up stands and blinds and started off focusing on them.3 days ago we learned another youth hunter had shot one of them and the other two had relocated to a 1100 acre slough west of us.The buck the youth shot was the smallest one of the 3, a big 9 pointer with a drop tine and a wieght of 240 lbs according to the scale at the elevator, they had to drag him out with an ATV. Learning the other two werent on the property any longer and the fact that we were leaving this weekend limiting the days he had to hunt we switched gears and moved to a spot with more does. After having two seperate occassions where the does came within range but spotted us and never offered a shot Sunday morning I decided to try something different.I pulled out a grass matt used for waterfowl hunting I had bought last year at Walmart on clearance me and Austin spent the morning turning the 4ft by 4 ft matt into a lightwieght portable blind for hunting the edge of the switchgrass and cornfields we were using. We went out Sunday afternoon, set it up and blended it in with some of the surrounding vegetation{thanks for the inspiration Buckee }It worked almost to well, about 45 minutes before dark we heard branches breaking in the grove to our left.It quieted down again and I honestly thought a person was walking through it making the noise, I was on the verge of telling Austin we were going to have to leave when the grass to my left started rustling. Not 10 ft from us two does stepped out.I tapped Austin on the leg and he nodded that he saw them.Unfoutanately I was between Austin and the deer and he had no shot, being that close I figured we were going to be busted in a few seconds. The big doe lifted her head up and looked over at the blind, then went back to eating, she did that 2 or 3 times over the next couple minutes but apparently it blended in well enough she noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Finally they started moving off away from us and Austin was able to get his gun up on his bipod an get the barrel out the window I had cut in the mat.He aimed and aimed for what seemed like forever but they were facing away from us and offered him not shots. Finally at the top of the hill about 40 yards away they turned broadside and he got his gun on the bigger doe.The sun was setting directly behind them and made seeing very hard, from where we were at it appeared the small doe was in front of the bigger one, he pulled the trigger and the bigger doe wheeled around, ran back towards us and into the grove, the smaller one i didnt pay much attention to as she only ran about 10 yards and stopped to look around.I thought he had missed and was going to tell him that when the doe in front of us tipped over, he shot the wrong doe We decided to give her a few minutes and started getting things packed back up when I noticed movement in front of us.Again, the blind worked so well that the skunk directly on the other side of it about 3 ft from us never knew we were there, which was a very good thing. To make a long story short Austin had to sneak up and put another shot into her to finish her off after the skunk left but he did it quite well and kept his head when dealing with the wounded doe.Tonight were going to have fresh backstraps for supper
  24. Re: Antler restriction poll I like to shoot bigger bucks, sometimes Ill wait two or three years between takig a shot at a buck, its just part of the game.Along the way Ill buy doe tags when available and keep the freezer full using those. Would I like to see antler restrictions imposed on everyone, no chance. Most of the people who Ive had any experience dealing with that favor these type rules dont care about the overall health of the herd, know next to nothing about genetics and are under the misguided assumption that restrictions will turn every buck in the area into a record book buck in a couple years.I hunt the way I do because its my choice, I dont need the government to tell everyone they have to do it my way. Most folks that favor antler retrictions now have shot thier fill of smaller bucks in the past and gotten to the point they are willing to wait for a bigger one through experience and patience gained from killing these smaller bucks. Why should it be mandated to the younger hunters that they cant have the same learning experience the people that push these restrictions so hard already had?Not everyone hunts for the same reasons, and they shouldnt. They shouldnt have to.If you want to chase big bucks chase them, dont expect everyone else to conform to your style of hunting though.
  25. Re: Sportsmen Aren\'t Laughing at New Cartoon Movie [ QUOTE ] Cartoon Movie [/ QUOTE ] That pretty well sums it up right there, its a cartoon, nothing else.Cartoons in this country have been used to poke fun at almost every aspect of life, religion, minorities, politicians, even different races.Hunters seem to be the only ones that get irate at being portrayed in them in a humorous fashion.Ill take my kids to see it, they can distinguish reality from make believe quite well and I am not to worried its going to corrupt them later in life.Matter of fact most kids attention spans and the amount of cartoons they watch it probably wont be remembered by the day after they see it.
