    call backs

Re: call backs [ QUOTE ] I was in construction for several years and know exactly what you are talking about! I made it very clear to the homeowner that I did NOT do the job originally and would NOT do any repairs on a job that was not done correctly! At first the people really raised cain with me, but I stuck to my policy and never looked back! If you go in and fix other people's screw-ups, those people will continue doing lousy work and you are the one who is going to get a bad name! Let those home-owners suffer in their own doings! It is not worth the hassles they create! I would let them sit there and get good and wet with their cheap and lousy jobs! Better luck next time! [/ QUOTE ] LOL, they dont get much wetter then the worst one I described, the guy actually asked his wife if the cieling was getting closer to him when he was lying on the couch watching tv that night

    Steel Homes?

Re: Steel Homes? New, i suppose youd have to wiegh the odds of a tornado actually being drawn to your house compared to the odds of termites, rotten boards, mold, and other things targeting your wooden home

    call backs

we got hit with about 5 inches of rain last weekend and the next morning my phone started ringing at 7:30 with people whos roofs were leaking wanting me to come back out and fix them. The only problem was they were only callbacks in the sense that Id bid 3 of these roofs and was told I was to high priced and they had found someone else to shingle them Apparently the guys that did these roofs wont return the peoples phone calls and wont come back out and look at them. I dont mind losing jobs to other contractors all that much, it goes with the territory and theres not much you can do about it.But I never seen anything quite like two of these. One they had put he siding on before shingling it.THey went over 3 layers of shingles so when they tore them off there was an 1 1/12 inch gap between the roof and the siding on the dormers. They never put new flashing in, they just stuck a board in the gap and caulked it.Its leaked for 5 years. the second one the guy did put new flashing in but it leaked worse then the other one.He started his flashing way below the valley tin and left a golf ball size hole on both sides of the rof right where all the water runs out of the valley, theres one ceiling down inside. On the other part of the roof he left the antenna wires sticking out of the roof right at the bottom. He actaully cut his shingles back around them leaving a 2 inch pocket that fills up with water and slowly leaks in.That ceilings got mold growing out of it.the same guy put the windows in, he busted all the siding above them and three of them have leaked ever since Theres 2 walls that need replaced. i coulda been a real pain about it, refused to look at them, or jacked the price up on them for fixing it.But I didnt, I went and fixed the problem areas and never said a word about who shingled them. Heres where things get bad, these people actually got mad when I billed them, they thought it was terrible I charged them that much for fixing someone elses screw up.The one lady is actually suing the guy that roofed hers and Im supposed to wait for a lawsuit to collect under 100$ from her I cant understand some people, I did all these repairs, put off a big steel job for an extra week, and charged them very little money for the time involved, and they acted like I was the one that poked holes in thier roofs The one guy even said he was going to get a few other bids to fix all the water damage inside, its an insurance job for crying out loud, its gonna cost him the same deductable no matter who does it.Iguesse I just needed to vent a little, its been a long week and im not sure what people expect anymore, Im broke, and pretty unimpressed with the people ive dealt with all week.should I just quit returning thier calls, charge them more so they quit calling or what .Public relations was never my strong point.

    Steel Homes?

Re: Steel Homes? we put up all steel buildings the last place I worked and winter gets pretty cold up here.i think Jeramie hit this one on the head with furring the walls out.We used a vapor barrier insulation and you could still see the heat loss through the perlons in the winter, the frost would melt off all of them long before the rest of the roof defrosted and Im sure it transfered the cold/ moisture in the same way. Most of ours werent finished on the inside though so it wasnt an issue.

    What a storm

Last night we had several storms come through, the winds were anywhere from 50 to 80+ miles an hour and there were straight line winds south of here strong enough to take out a church and a bunch of farm buildings. No idea how much rain we got but within a half hour of the storm starting the road in front of our house flooded from my curb clear across and up into my neighbors yard, and its still sprinkling rain now Guesse the droughts over anyway. They were closing roads and cars were stranded and in the ditch all over from the amount of rain that came down. The hail missed us but around us they got hail up to an inch in diameter. In a minute my phones gonna start ringng with people having roof leaks they want fixed. Most of them wont believe me when I tell them thier roofs probably wouldnt leak again in a regular rain storm anyway but i suppose Ill climb up and look at em just so they feel better Matter of fact waters dripping in through my laundry room roo as we speak, its hard to get flashing to stand up to that kinda downpour

    Honesty pays off

Well the wifes still looking for a nursing job and moneys stretched about the tightest Ive ever seen it this month.Just this morning we had a huge brawl over the checking account and I said some things I shouldnt have. Constructions been very hit and miss this summer with the price of everything going up people are only doing the neccassary repairs on things.Last week i had to hit the guy I was working for up for a 400$ advance on the steel job we were in the middle of.Its a small town and that type things pretty common with the locals so it wasnt a big deal. we finished the job and went back this morning to pick up our ladders and give the guy a bill.I was loading the ladders when he came out and asked what the damage was.I told him 1400$ and told him to take out the 400$ advance Id gotten. He wrote the check, I started talking to him and stuck it in my pocket. He has thousands of dollars worth of building repairs and some remodeling he wants done on his house and we discussed it for awhile and i drove off without giving him the bill.At the bank the lady counted the money out, and I went outside before it dawned on me she had counted out 1400$ He hadnt heard me tell him to take the extra 400$ out and had overpaid me that amount.I have to admitt, after the morning I had financially I seriously considered just pocketing the money. He didnt have the bill to look at, and he would never know he overpaid us at that point.Im stretched to the breaking point and have already had my long distance shut off, and got into a payment agreement with the electric company over some delinquint payments. With a week left in this month Im honestly looking to pick up an extra 500$ just to pay the rest of this months bills off. So anyway, as we were headed back out to give this guy back his 400$ Im thinking i must be nuts.we get there explain it to him about the difference and hand him the money. He pockets it and jokes about it being a good tip, thanks us for bringing it back then takes it back out, gives it to us, and tells us we work to cheap anyway and he will remember this in the future So I got a 400$ bonus on a 1400$ steel job and thousands of dollars worth of future work lined up, Im close to paying the monthly bills, and when I get home the elevator calls and wants a bid on a huge fertilizer shed roof here in town To top it off the wife is right this minute at a job interview, it will be a LPN job to begin with but when an RN position becomes available she will be in the running for it and the place is currently building a medical clinic/assisted living, building they will have to staff. And Walmart finally called back today to get the last information about the incident we had over there and theyll be settling that with us by the end of the week My day took a definate turn for the better as soon as I took that money back, so I guesse honesty does pay

  9. Re: huntings losing its focus Chris, a lotta what you see isnt new hunters, its other hunters trying new seasons out.I know here I bow and muzzleloader hunted for a lotta years and never ran into anyone, they all shotgun hunted. Now you dont see anyone hardly shotgun hunting but the bow and ML seasons are crazy, theres guys everywhere.Their not new hunters, their just taking advantage of the different seasons and the improved technology in todays "primitive" weapons. If youve had a lot of extra tags or changes in the seasons around there it might explain a lot as well.
  10. Re: Wife took her boards [ QUOTE ] Pretty rough week waiting on grades, huh? [/ QUOTE ] I felt my life was in danger on several occasions
  11. Re: Wife took her boards ZooBear, she applied for the weekend package deal down there either at Mercy or Methodist, Ill pass on the info though, thanks Bad part, its 3 hours from here, good part is its about 12$ an hour higher and only 2 weekends a month
  12. Re: Do you like to eat... Yep, I eat a lot of liver and onions.I like the heart to.Gotta admitt though since the desiases like CWD and such started making the rounds Ive quit eating the internal organs outta the deer I shoot and stick to beef liver.
  13. Well, my wife finally got to take her state boards. It was a wild day last week as she was 3 hrs from home, forgot her license and almost didnt get to take them at all because of it, then she got the max number of questions and was so rattled she thought for sure she flunked it.But after a 5 day wait for the results{Its almost inhumane} she passed, shes a licensed RN now in the state of Iowa.
  14. Re: huntings losing its focus [ QUOTE ] The thing is I will not waste my time debating any of the issues because the majority has set ways and the only way they will accept that other people hunt with different rules is that they must do it on their own. (err talk about contradicting a statement [/ QUOTE ] Im sorry Nut, you just lost me there
  15. Re: huntings losing its focus Dont get me wrong i would personally love to go on a guided hunt when my financial situations a little more stable.I see nothing wrong with it either. But between the two scenarios 9 outta 10 times if theres a complaint its about the meat hunter.I was in no way saying that anyone had to like Nugent, he was just an example I was using. I can unfourtanately see a big connection between guided hunts, and people being willing to spend big $$ for big antlers and a loss of hunting land, an increase in people that will only lease thier land to the highest bidder, and the crazy prices states are putting on non resident tags now.IMO moneys gonna be the ruin of this sport at some point if we dont change some of the attitudes were seeing nowdays.
  16. Just read the Ted Nugent post and an exchange going on in there got me to thinking.Instead of further hijacking that post I thought Id start this one. The topic was about baitpiles and Nugent hunting over them.It was pointed out that Nuges family eats nothing but wild game and for him it was no different then going to the store to hunt over these piles. The attitude that this is immorral and unethical is a pretty common viewpoint these days. But lets take a look at a couple scenarios and see why this line of thought makes no sense. You got a guy thats hunting for the meat, his family will eat nothing but what he kills and he doesnt discriminate, he will shoot a buck, doe, even a fawn for meat for the table. He chooses to shoot them using a cornpile and its somehow viewed as a bad thing by many. Second scenario.A guy pays someone between 2 and 20 thousand dollars to hunt someplace. The hunter does very little if any work besides writing the check. The guide scouts the location, hangs the stands, brings the guy in and out all the hunter does is pull the trigger. And lets be honest, he doesnt give a crap about the meat in most cases, he paid that much for a set of antlers. And this commonly accepted and considered totally moral and ethical Sooooo, when did hunting go from being about substanance to being totally focused on inches of antlers and money? Why is it wrong to use your own wits and whatever is available{cornpile for instance} and actually be hunting for the sake of the hunt but its totally accepted nowdays to pay big bucks for big antlers and nobody thinks nothing of it.Seriously, im baffled by this line of logic.
  17. Re: Realtree.com cover story, suports H.F. Operation! Rossman, my bad, I was replying to a post on another forum and picked up 35,000 over there [ QUOTE ] How the heck would elk get in. they can't unless there is a big hole!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Thats my point, how do they keep a huntable population of record class elk in such a small enclosure without outside elk being able to get in somewhere?I wasnt even arguing with you when I asked that, more like thinking out loud
  18. Re: Realtree.com cover story, suports H.F. Operation! [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I just read the artical and gotta go with the last post, about any place that runs livestock has a fence around it, cattle dont know property lines.13,000 acres is big enough for about any deer or elk out there to avoid humans if thier spooked.I think you may be overreacting a little about the fence. [/ QUOTE ] I have never seen an 8 foot chain link fence built for livestock!!!! Last I checked cows can't jump more than about 1 foot, and farmers are still using barbed wire with electricity!!!!! Come on guys!!!!!! The fence was no accident. It was built to prevent the elk form leaving the property!!!!!! --rossman [/ QUOTE ] i also know that deer and elk are very, very hard on regular fences.Matter of fact one of the biggest gripes the cattle farmers around here have about deer isnt the fact they eat thier crops, its that they knock the fences down constantly. In a hunting/livestock operation that size Im gonna guesse that an 8 ft chain link fence would probably save a small fortune over having to repair a regular fence the wildlife could damage.Personally on 35,000 acres of ground Id hate to start looking for the spot the cows are getting out. One other things got me curious, if you know for a fact theres an 8 ft tall fence all the way around the property how do elk get in?Really, if there shooting so many bulls a year and no fresh stuffs getting into the property Id think theyd have a pretty sickly inbred bunch of elk running around.Even 35,000 acres cant have that many wild free ranging elk on it.You did ask questions like this before you freaked and demnded your money back right?

    Noah's Ark

Re: Noah\'s Ark [ QUOTE ] I strongly feel that this would be awesome if they could use technology to prove that this find is in fact the ark. This is a very intersting topic and to be able to prove once and for all just how high the waters rose would be great. [/ QUOTE ] Funny thing is awhile back when there was a discussion on evolution vs. religion a lot of this is the same technology that the ones rooting for religion were saying wasnt reliable and couldnt be trusted for aging fossils and such.Wonder how much the tune will change if theres anything to this Ark finding and they have to rely on these same methods for aging the wood and such.

    Wasnt meant to be

I was all set to have BBQ ribs yesterday but apparently it wasnt meant to be.I was getting the ribs ready about 9:00 yesterday, started the oven, put the water in the ribs, and the phone rang.My aunt was having a get together cuz her son was coming home and my mom called to remind me.We talked a few minutes and then the wife told me we had to goto the store so we left.About 1:00 we get back home and my wifes putting groceries away. She asks how the ribs are coming and I tell her I havent chacked. She tells me theyd probably cook better in the oven then they are in the sink I never put em in when I got off the phone. I figure 1:00 to 6 or 7:00 will give them time to cook anyway so I put em in and we goto my aunts house.I get home around 5:30 and goto put the BBQ sauce on em.Theres none in the cupboard, and the nearest stores 30 miles round trip from here I say screw it and put the ribs in the fridge, I figure the wife can pick some BBQ sauce up an warm em back up today. I get home tonight and find out two things, my son put his nightcrawlers in the fridge after he got done fishing this weekend. And the youngest one opened the lid and let em out in the fridge My entire pan of ribs was full of nightcrawlers and my wife was freaking out No way her and the daughter were gonna eat them, they wouldnt even finish putting groceries away till I got the fridge cleaned out LMAO, so after all that the dogs got to eat the ribs I spent 2 days cooking

  25. Re: Housebraking a new puppy We kept Josey my lab in a kennel overnight for the first couple months, dogs dont seem to like to potty where they gotta sleep to much.During the day we just made sure someone took her out every hour or so and if no one was home or we had to leave her for a couple hors she went back in the kennel. When she did go on the floor we just put his nose down right above the spot{not in it} and told her NO in a firm voice. Then tapped her on the nose ,not real hard but hard enough to let her know she was in trouble. Then threw her outside.Repeat that about 150 times and your done
