I was going to say "Don't give up, he might return!" Very glad to hear he made it back safely:) And no, not dumb at all to be upset. I had a cat disappear for a couple days over Easter long ago...I think I cried every day, then he showed up! You never can tell with cats.

So I was working monday for 4 hours in the morning to cover for an RN coming in late. I saw there was a new admit from the weekend, last name matched the last name of the landowner I asked permission from to turkey hunt on their land. I thought huh, wonder if any coincidence....nah. Well the medication nurse comes out while I'm flipping through charts quick before I did my assessments and said "Mr. ____________ was talking about you, did you turkey hunt on his property?" I said "oh my gosh, it must be him!" lol. When I had gone up to get permission, I talked to the wife and told her I was working over on this rehab floor. Sure enough it was the husband...what do ya know! And what is really cool is I go in to meet him, do a quick assessment and he tells me I can go ahead and hunt whatever up there, anytime! I told him well thanks, I really appreciated turkey hunting up there and he's like no, anytime, and he was going to tell his sons so they know I could be up there.. I told him well I'll let him know if I go up there hunting and he said no, don't bother, whenever I want, just go up and hunt!:1eye: I now have a nice spot to hunt...will probably take advantage during late gun season/late archery, fall turkey, spring turkey:camera:. It's one of those spots where the turkeys and deer when they disappear from the usual land I hunt, I think they go up there to hang out. Anyway just wanted to share! It pays to always do your best and treat everyone equally, because a certain SOMEONE is always watching from above...and I believe I just got rewarded:1eye:

Congrats guys! I pittled out...never got my 3 entered...my teams never do well anyway, lol. Keep that star polished!

Work...that's my excuse,lol

Maybe if you had asked a moderator in the first place if your post advertising the turkey hunting was ok or not, you wouldn't be in this predicament...
-
Wow! I didn't know you were working on that in PA Kat...I heard stuff about it on the radio time to time...
-
Yeah, if he sticks around for next spring, he'll be a whopper. Yeah I'm going to see if TruGlo will fix it, I swear something is not right within the scope, something looks nocked off...maybe it happened when I fell or some other time, I dunno.

Ditto! I had to do it this spring...I will not let an animal suffer if I can help it....it's not right to the animal.

Hold on a minute, let me get...:eat: It's a matter of opinion and a matter of what the state regulations are...IMO. For example some think it's unethical to shoot a turkey off the roost. In NY it's not illegal and I did it way bacl when I first started turkey hunting, only because I was absolutely positive of making a clean kill...to me it's ethical, but to someone else it may be unethical. Baiting, well some states can do it, some states can't. IMO if someone wants to bait where it's legal, they can. I won't even if I could, I think it takes away from the "real hunt" I want to experience. What I really think is unethical is what our neighbors do during gun season - surround a field with all their guys, push deer out of a block of woods, empty their guns on deer running full out...I found 3 dead deer this year on neighboring property, most likely is my guess from them. Now that is just unethical to the deer and unsafe when there are other people hunting.

Great show, just watched it today!

Thanks guys...it's a bummer but hopefully he bred alot of those hens and there will be plenty of poults running around! Going to check up back tonight, if nothing, then that's the season for me. Glad tp have put a tag on a jake though. Dunno if I'll use a Red Dot next year or go back to the open sights....

Turkeygirl replied to mallard_drake85's topic in Hunting Equipment
Very nice photos!! Yes, it is so hard to wait to go check a trail cam...especially when it gets to be September/October,lol -
Way to go Christina! Congrats! I know you will likely do well! You finish up earlier than the kids do here in my area...Alot of schools don't let out until mid June!

Well I feel slightly better just finding out my TruGlo Red Dot was totally messed up...found it shooting low and to the left...Not sure what happened. Tried to get it sighted back in but whenevr I moved out to 30 yards, I had no pattern, and at 25 I kept moving left and right. Andy looked at it said my dot was floating. I looked at it to then thought something looks off kilter within the scope itself!! Like a ring or something crooked! I took the red dot off and shot with the fiber optic sights on there and all my shots were dead turkeys...5 times better than what I was getting trying to re-sight the TruGlo.... I'm going to try contacting TruGlo at some point...

Totally blew it...finally had it all come together...and blew it! Last night watched the gobbler with now 5 hens feeding in the field by the old gravel pit. They did not roost until 9pm and roosted in some trees right by the field so I knew they'd fly down in the field in the AM. Got up early and walked in, put my hen and jake decoys out in the field...There wasn't a good tree where I wanted to sit so ended up tucked in a honeysuckle shrub. Must have been around 5am when a hen talks a little bit and he gives one gobble. Shortly after a hen flies down and is clucking around looking at the decoys. Soon after HE flies down and lands to my right....just as anticipated. Then he makes a straight line right to the decoys. He's starting to puff up and tuck his head in. Well he was out 20-25 yards. If he got to my left any further I wouldn't be able to swing the gun. So I put the red dot on his neck and BOOM! He jumps/flaps into the air and takes off, 2nd shot missed as well. I watch him fly and land down in the woods. My heart sunk. The one hen actually just stood around awhile and eventually all the other hens flew down into the field. I called one in to about 5 yards from me and she hung around a little but then moved out to the other hens. I should have let him just walk right in and should have waited till his head was up and made sure I had the gun shouldered well....The excitement got the better of me, again. After the hens disappeared up the field, I went out to check the shot sight....a few feathers...mostly were dark black, I think breast or back and most of them were the tips shot off...and couple whole ones broken in half....Looked for blood, no blood. Eventually took a peek down in the area about where I thought he flew, just to make sure he wasn't dead in there, didn't see anything. I hope and pray I didn't wound him or not too badly at that. I'm not sure how bad I just messed up my last 1-2 days to hunt but I am so bummed. Guess all I can do now is see if he's back in there tonight or the other ridge... Any suggestions/tips? Anyone experienced similar thing and still get the bird? I'm going to take a shot or two just to make sure my red dot wasn't off somehow.... I can't believe it...just can't believe it....

So while I'm gone, I'll need someone to keep an eye on the place. Since Timmy did such a good job last summer, what do ya all say about having hime back if he'd like to?:1eye: :gunsmilie::pop:

Well in 2 weeks I leave for camp....so maybe things will get interesting again.....I know some can't wait to get rid of me....

Hope you had a wonderful birthday Doe-ee!!!

No hunt this AM, work. Went out tonight after work...no gobble from either spots he's roosted at previously...dunno...maybe just an off night I hope. Will try to go out tomorrow am to the ridge he's been at the most.
-
The hens I swear never leave and I think he waits for them to come back to him, I dunno. Can't go out tomorrow, gotta work but will hopefully roost him tomorrow night and hunt Fri-Sun....hard!
-
So the gobbler was roosted, same spot. I set up on the logging trail just above him where he flew down the other day. Watched him gobble and strut on the branch. What's he do!? Fly down the trail to where I had been set up the other day!:gun1: Grrrr....So if he's back tonight, I'm trying to decide to I set up below now or stick to where I was this AM, thinking that he's playing tricks and going to land up the trail next time around....I did get 4 hens into my jake/hen decoy set up...they may have been his hens but he gobbled from down below and wandered off. I finally scattered the hens and snuck below and hard a hen yelping he gobbled, she cackled and shut up.
