  6. Beautiful morning to be in the stand but started off a little rough. Light variable winds were my first concern but I figured if I wasn't in the stand I wouldn't see anything anyway. I arrived at my stand at 6am with LST starting at 6:23. I found my pull rope broken so I had to climb with bow in hand which I hate to do. Fortunately this stand is only 10 feet high so that wasn't too much of a problem until I got to the top and noticed a large brannch had fallen from the tree and landed on top on my stand which prevented me from getting on top of my stand. I had to climb back down to put my bow down then back up to clear the large branch. I made so much noise that I had a few deer blowing behind me---figured that ended my hunt. Finally got the large branch clear and went back down to retrieve my bow. Resprayed myself with scent killer since I was sweating and at 6:11 I was set to hunt. In this stand there is no seeing the deer approach--it is so thick they just show up and sure enough at 6:55 I hear a stick break and look over to my left and see a buck stepping into the plot. Large body with ugly rack but mature deer. I slowly stand and wait for the shot. After a minute or two the buck starts walking broadside toward my shooting lane. At 15 yards I stop the buck with a light grunt and and take aim and score with a great double lung shot. The arrow penetrates out the other side but doesn't pass out of the buck. The buck kicks and runs into the nastiest/thickest part of my land. I can only watch him for about 20 yards before he disappears. I get down 10 minutes later to look at point of impact and find good blood. I back out and return 40 minutes later. I start the tracking and within 30 yards I find this: The blood trail is excellent and at about 100 yards thru the thickest cover I find this: It took me an hour to drag him out of this stuff--thru a dry creek bed, over logs, under a fence, and thru briars. Today my legs feel like jello and my lower back and shoulders are killing me but it was well worth it. He won't score great as he doesn't have the length and width. At check in after gutting he weighed 140# which of all the deer I have killed is the largest bodied deer I have shot. todd
  7. Basic 8 with two kickers at the base of the left antler. Arrived at the stand at 6am to find my pull rope for my bow had been broken by a fallen limb. Luckily the stand is only about 10 feet high so I was able to climb the ladder with bow in hand. Hate doing that but didn't have a choice if I wanted to hunt this stand. Get to the top to find a huge branch that had fallen with the last wind storm on top of my stand. Walk back down and put bow on the ground and then climb back up to remove the branch off the stand. Deer blow behind me--figured the morning hunt was history. Finally get the large branch off and to the ground without making too much noise. Climb back down and get the bow--back in the stand. Attach harness to tree and screw in bow holder to tree. I finally get arrow knocked and I'm sweating from all the work. I decide I better respray myself with scent killer as the light wind was variable with one second being in my face and the next on my neck. Finally at 6:20 I'm ready to hunt and LST is 6:25. I'm hunting a little plot I made deep in the woods right at the property line of my property. My longest shot on this stand is 27 yards. The bad part is when a deer shows up you better be ready as you can't see them arriving due to thick cover. At 6:55 the buck shows up to my left. I don't have a shooting lane but fortunately the buck starts walking to my right. He is slowly walking and at 15 yards I give a little "bleat" to stop him and let arrow fly. Shot hits perfect broadside double lung. Buck kicks and takes in the trees. I gave him 40 minutes and followed a beautiful blood trail about 70 yards to find this: todd
  8. Ten pointer down this morning with the bowtech. In the woods dragging him out. Will post pics later today
  9. give them time. It is true that sometimes the deer have to learn to eat them but once they do they will eat them every year after.
  10. I'd be taking that bad boy!! congrats on a great buck todd
  11. congrats on the first deer! todd
  12. I'd have to agree with the others. Finish up that degree. Speech therapy is a great profession that you can always fall back on. Guiding would be fun but I enjoy hunting too much myself to give that up. Good Luck Todd
  13. I planned my wedding and the birth of my two kids so it wouldn't interfere with hunting season!!!
