I'm going with 100gr Slick Tricks for elk this year, dont have any experience with the heads you mentioned though.
-
I've shot several expandables over the past several years but the problem with all expandable heads is durability. With the slightest bending of the blades they no longer function correctly, that is if they dont break. It's like a one shot deal, which i've chosen heads mostly on cutting dia. so the blades were long and thin. But the heads i've shot are the 100 gr Vortex 2 blades- very simple head, large 2 1/2 inch cutting diameter. Seen the most deer die from this head, a real killer but .027 blades means you seldom are able to use the same blades but replacements are reasonable. Spitfire- 100gr 3 blade. . . . a little more durable as far as blades are concerned but just didnt like the snap-lock design of the blades. Some heads didnt seem to function well right out of the pack. A real pain to take apart and assemble. But, watched 3 deer die to these heads last year and all in sight. . . . good penetration into bone as well. Rocket Hammerheads- 100gr 3 blade This is the head the Primos boys were using on their videos. A 2 inch hole is pretty nasty with 3 blades cutting, great flying head but the blades are not for shootin' 2 animals. They always were severely bent and often broken upon retrieval. This year i'm moving to the 100gr Slick Tricks to give fixed heads a try, it's been sometime since i've shot fixed blades and since a trip for elk was on the calendar i opted to got with penetration this year.

I shoot an SBE for ducks and couldnt ask for a better shooting and functioning gun, and it's seen the elements. All my buddies that shoot Benelli say the same thing, you are the first i've ever heard to be truly unsatisfied. If you're using the gun exclusively for turkeys. . . . why not equip it with adjustable sights so you can move the poi where you want it?

Let me explain what we've got. . . My buddys' dad farms around 500 ac and has for years and usually plants all cotton. The farm is split into 2 large pieces, one of which we hunt (about 200ac). This year due to the drought, he only planted the half we dont hunt and about 150 ac worth of fields are limed and fertilized ready for planting on our half but he's not going to plant his crops b/c by the time we got some consistent rain it was too late. So we've got some huge fields ready for seed, we've got 22 acres in browntop for the birds already. So we're looking for an annual that is relatively inexpensive for the deer so we can make use of all the fertilized land we've got available. We've already got about 10 acres we always plant that we have imperial chickory and clover in. So, what is an annual that will pull more deer on the property with minimal cost since we're wanting to cover as much area as possible since we've got it available. Although we know planting all 150ac is not reasonable. Appreciate the input.

I got Charter Communications in Athens Ga and Charter Communications in Cedartown Ga and both carry the Outdoor Channel.
-
and i bet those will help ya get a few to heaven as well, nice plots.
-
We're finally getting some rain in Ga. . . . . . . the 15 acres of browntop milllet for the birds has come up strong and is looking good.
-
Thats incredible!!
-
I'd stick to the trick . . . . looks like it worked.
-
That gonna be a trip. . . .leave room for the ladies to sunbathe in early teal season.
-
Thats not a duck blind. . . . . thats an island. Cant wait to see the progress.
-
I'm in the same boat. . . . first trip, hopefully not my last. We'll be due west of Denver a couple hours from what i understand in 131 i believe, hopefully where the elk are.
-
I agree it does look a little funny b/c its different, but if it proves to give better arrow flight then i dont mind lookin' a little funny. I'm sure it'll be the talk with the guys at the local pro shop if you stop by to shoot.
-
Cant give you any feedback, only that i'm going to give them a try in a couple weeks. . . . been waiting on the bucknasty strings and cables to arrive and got the message today that it's here. . . . so hopefully by next weekend we'll have some fobs and can see what i think.

Just the luck of the draw sometime i guess. . . . . had fun guys.

Congrats Tom Takers and thanks a ton for the hard work put in to make this whole thing work out again this year!! It's been a blast as always! Cant wait til next year!!! -
Never heard of anything close to this type of behavior with a lab. . . . all labs i've encountered have all been extremely friendly animals that were excellent with kids and were more than willing to accept any affection. My guess would be something medically wrong with the dog.

Thats why i practice that shot as much as any other. . . . . but definately props to him for not taking a ahot he was uncomfortable with.
-
cutter, is this a first trip for you? we'll be close.

The rain has waited us out and the dove field may not make it out of the bag b/c we've still not had enough rain in that part of the state to settle the dust. But. . . . we have gotten several good showers on the corn fields across the county so they're looking good! I'm hoping the combine leaves plenty for the geese!!

Shane, how's that pup of yours coming along?
-
I'll be there at the tail of August and head of September after public land elk with a bow.

Ah man. . . picking a single best is impossible!! I've had another great year and was able to create new friendships with all credit going to gobbling turkeys. How would i choose between . . . . another incredible DIY osceola showdown in the Glades. Gobbling birds around every public land cypress head and like always the 'one of a kind' terrian. End result - feathers ruffled! Finally connecting with archery equipment and the introduction of Scrappy to the turkey world! And of course the trip to OK where i got my first taste of Rios and made a friendship with a fellow RT forum member, huntinguide. Hope to share many more hunts! Was also able to round the season out with poncho exposing 2 more Ga easterns to lead poison and myself adding one more to the collection thanks to the scattergun.
