  1. That is a great buck. Congrats to him.
  2. Traditional archery is addicting, becareful. I picked it up 4 years ago. It brought back the kid in me about archery hunting. Everyone has their own opinion on whether to shoot longbow or recurve. I use to shoot recurves when I was younger, great shooting bows. When I decided to go all traditional I picked up a longbow and never looked back. For me I liked the way it felt in the hand better. That is the big thing with traditional, as with a compound. You really need a bow that fits your hand. Usually the risers are cut different from one bow style to the next. Choicing a draw weight. You want to start light. Most will recommend in the 40-45# range. The lighter the better. This will ensure that when you are first learning to shoot the bow you are keeping with proper form. Form is everything when shooting traditional. If the bow is too heavy for you, then you will not get to full anchor before releasing arrow. This will affect your accuracy in a major way, and make you get discouraged with shooting. As for arrows. A good aluminum or carbon that matches the bow is great. For just learning to shoot you will miss the target from time to time, this happens. And as you know arrows can run you mild to wild. Ask as many questions as you want. I will be happy to help you out in any way. I am not real good at just putting out information, but good at answering questions. You may also want to check out Tradgang.com. Great group of people that just shoot traditional. And very friendly.
  3. Cool looking buck. Congrats
  4. Congrats in a good buck. Where in NJ did you get him?
  5. It usually works out that way, that during gun season they walk close enough for bow shots.

Great deer. Gotta love the traditional equipment.
  8. You could try Gander Mtn. They have replacements and do the gunsmithing. You could also look on Ebay, GunBroker.com, and Gunsamerica.com.
  9. Good luck. I normally head down to Barbour County, WV for the season opener. Friends have a farm down there. Not this year though. My little girl was born last week, Nov. 13th. But I will be out in NJ with the bow, morning hunts and afternoons resting with my baby.
  10. Finally broke the ice for this year and with the new bow. I picked up a new Bear's Paw bow prior to the season starting. What a great shooting bow. But up until now I have not been able to get everything to come together to let the arrow fly at a deer. Well that all changed tonight. Got out in the stand tonight around 2pm, on a cold windy day. But I was dressed for the long haul. The first deer that came in was a small 1.5y/o doe. At first I was going let her walk, but she happen to offer that perfect shot that we all dream of. She stood 12 yards away with a slight quarter away. I watched her for at least a full minute just studying the spot that I wanted the arrow to connect with. When she turned her head again I came to full draw. Never taking my eyes off the spot of fur I picked. I let the arrow fly and saw it connect. A perfect double lung. She went about 50 yards before expiring almost in front of my dad, who was in the bottom of the field.
  11. That is a prime example of knowing your target and beyond. No matter how close or far away your are from a dwelling or such. It is extremely sad. My heart goes out to the family.
  12. Congrats to your son. It is definitely something he will never forget.
  13. Congrats on your first archery harvest. As long as in your mind and heart it is a trophy, then that is all that matters.
  14. 45# is a great starting bow. Like Jim stated about the arrows. Start yourself out with some aluminum's or carbons. I shot the Gold Tip Traditionals with my old bow. They did shoot well, but wanted more weight. Now I am shooting Alaska Bowhunting Grizzly Stiks Alaskan. I like the extra weight of that arrow. Just remember when you first get out there to take your time with strict form on each shot. Does not matter where you are hitting on the target, as long as you keep a strict form. And do not overdue the amount of shots you take. It will fatigue you alot faster than you think. Once you have the form down you can start working on what style of shooting works best for you. Traditional archery hit like crack to a junkie. I can not get enough of it. I stop 4 nights a week on my way home from work to shoot. It is just fun being out there shooting the bow. And taking that first deer is like starting hunting all over again. That uncontrollable shaking in the tree as the deer approaches. Granted I have shoot 2 great bucks and a doe with my trad gear and my heart still jumps out of my chest, even on deer that I do not plan on shooting at.
  15. Congrats. That is going to one good eaten animal. I love Moose meat.
