I will be heading down to WV for my standard Thanksgiving week. Pop's and I might be heading to Maine, but not looking good for this year. But you just never know with the 2 of us.

I have been looking at Stewart's Archery and Bear Paw. At present I am leaning towards Bear Paw. I have gotten some good reviews from guys that have shoot them against other brands.

Re: Need help on a DO it yourself Moose hunt in Alaska Yes Perry, it is Ron. Dad and I are doing well. I should be seeing my buddy this weekend. Hopefully he has the info at the house. If not I will have him call his guy out of Montana that books for him. How was your season? -
Need help on a DO it yourself Moose hunt in Alaska

Re: Need help on a DO it yourself Moose hunt in Alaska Perry, I will try to get you some information of some people in Alaska that do self-guided hunts from a friend. I am actually looking to do one in the future. The bush pilot will fly you in and out or he has one where he flies you up river and you float the river. I just have to get the info for you. It might take a few days. I will PM you when I get it. -
Re: Black Bear Outfitters? This is where I shot my bear at in 2002. My boar was 325lbs with a unofficial skull of 19 1/8", and not the biggest bear I saw that week. The food and fishing is great there also. http://www.kendawildernesslodge.com/

Police encounter with hunter leads to ............
njbowhntr replied to buckee's topic in Bowhunting
Re: Police encounter with hunter leads to ........ Well I have read the responses on this post. I notice that there are alot of different, but yet the same views at to what they would. Some say they would have dropped the bow, and others say not on their life. Well that is easy for you to say, you were not in the tree. We are all a little tougher when we are not the one in the tree with a gun drawn. And on the other end, none of us were the police officer that walk into a scenerio that is not taught in the police academy or they have ever encountered. Not that police officers learn everything in the academy, but they do learn alot. I am sure that if the same officer was to head out on a call of the same situation it would be handled differently. But, it will only be different once he is positive that the person in the tree only has a bow, and no firearm is present. -
Re: Rifle for Quebec Caribou?? What ever you feel comfortable shooting out to 500 yards. I carry my 7mm STW for everything. I have been on 2 caribou and yet to pull the trigger yet. I missed the migration both times. The closest shot I had was about 600 yards. If I had a solid rest I would have pulled the trigger. But when I hit the deck to shoot prone of a rock, I ended up with my feet higher than my head. My back was all crunched up. Did not feel right, so I did not squeeze off the shot.

Re: How many pope and youngs have you killed I have been archery hunting for 17 years and have yet to shoot a P&Y. I have been getting closer every year due to deer mgnt. Last year I missed by a couple of inches. I have shot a P&Y black bear. I got him in Ontario on Sept 01, 2002. He scores @ 19 1/8". I just have to get in touch with the local scorer some day to have him officially scored.

Re: Switching from Compound to Traditional...... I will start by saying it is the biggest switch you can make. It will be extremely exhilerating, yet very humbling. I made the switch last year in the off season, and got my first buck with it this past season. I will try to answer some of your questions. I do not have any experience with either of those models. I shoot a custom Steve Welte Deathwish. When looking for a bow it is like looking for a compound. You are looking for a bow that fits you comfortably. The main differences are pretty obvious. No cams, which means no let-off. You will have to figure out a solid anchor point, being you do not have the pocket that the cam makes at full draw. As for weight, I use to shoot a 57# compound. I can pull as high as 70#, but 57# worked the best for hunting. My longbow is 52# @ 28inches. That is one thing to remember. When you look at the draw weight of a trad bow, that is the weight at 28inches. You would add or subtract 2.5# for each inch +/- 28 inches. As for sights and accessories. If the bow has mount holes, then mount away. If your bow does not, I would not recommend drilling just for the purpose. If you are going to shoot sights, then a standard rest will be acceptable. If you plan on shooting instinctive, your best bet is to shoot off the shelf. This puts the arrow closer to your point-of-aim, your finger. Arrows. You can shoot any arrow you want. I shoot Carbon Express carbons just for the durablity. Performance. You should expect a big decrease when compared to a compound. You will not have the velocity, which in turn affects your kinetic energy, that you have with a compound. This is going to shorten your "proficient" kill zone to under 30 yards. My "proficient" kill zone is 20 yards, with my compound I have harvested out to 47 yards. I also shoot instinctive. Shooting sequence does change. With the compound you draw into the pocket, anchor string, breathe, aquire target in sights, breathe, aim steady, breathe, and release. With a trad bow, shooting instinctive, you never take your eyes off the single hair you want to hit. You come to full draw, pause for a split second, and release arrow.

Anyone have any experience with any outfitters in Sask for bear? My dad and I are going to book a hunt this winter for the 2008 spring bear season. We have looked at a few outfitters so far, that seem pretty good. Just wondering if anyone has experience with anyone in that region. Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Re: Bohning Blazer I shot them for a season with my Mathews Outback 54# with Beman Max-4 topped with Thunderheads 100gr. The Blazers tighten up my groups, due to tighter flying arrow. I had less walking arrows when shooting broadheads also. I would recommend them to anyone.

Re: My cousin got his first deer! Congrats to Blair on his first deer.

Re: New whitetail rifle a good choice ? The 7mm-08 is an awesome round for deer, and for other animals also. I am getting a gun made up this summer in the round. And if the gun fits, shot it well. If the gun fits well, you will be an even better shot with it.

A big bear & a couple non-magnums..............
njbowhntr replied to Strut10's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Re: A big bear & a couple non-magnums.............. So I guess I have to buy a bigger gun so I can shot animals in the butt to kill them. I am off to the gun shop. I think I will use what I have and wait for a clean vitals shot. But that is just me. -
Re: Finally got my 7-pointer pics Nice buck. Congrats.
