    Anyone raise turtles?

Re: Anyone raise turtles? Make sure they have an area in the tank they can get out of the water and dry out. Turtles need to sun or algae grows on them and makes them sick. In a pinch, they like raw hamburger.

  3. Re: Canada - passport question Made this trip a couple times without the passport. My own past experience is Driver's Lisense and Birth Certificate serves you well to get you into Canada. Hunting and bringing a gun is usually more of a headache for the airline than the country. (Think extra baggage charge and extra inspection time) I do need to add. I have been asked at least once to produce a Social Security card in addition to DL and BC by an irritated customs agent. They can make their own rules on a bad day. And no repercussions for them if it's a bad rule. Get the picture. Passports are always easier. But no guarantee either. But sometimes even if you do everything right. Your going to have a bad day at customs. Unfortunately, the truth is sometimes it just happens.
  4. This is the puppy I rescued that had taken refuge under Annabelle's barn. Three previous attempts by others to catch him had failed. He wasn't supposed to be there, the afternoon I got there. Why I was able to catch him when other able bodied folks couldn't, just means it was meant to be. He came right to me. He had been eating worms and grubs, for over a week for sure. I found the holes he had dug. He was so skinny his hip bones looked like Football goal posts. His backbone stuck out like a stegasaraus. Vet said he tested positive for every parasite in the area. He had more worms than a bait store. I could hear coyotes howling near the barn. If they had caught him, he'd be dead. A sick 5 month old puppy has no chance against a bunch of territorial coyotes. The pup wasn't supposed to be there anymore. It had been a week since he was first sited. Amazingly, he was still there. He survived capture attempts, coyotes, starvation and parasites. I shouldn't have been able to catch him. I did. I contacted a friend (Keith) who had mentioned recently he had been thinking about getting a dog. In fact, he had just missed out on adopting one he wanted at the pound because someone else adopted it first. Apparently there was another dog planned for him. His horoscope that morning said, "Meet with friends tonight for a life changing experience." When something looks that meant to be. It is a gift from God. You are wise not to refuse it. Keith came to look at him that night. I assured him that even though the pup looked pretty hideous right now a couple days of the right food and medicine would make a drastic difference. I don't know if he believed me or not but he decided to pick him up in about a week. I told Keith, this is gonna be one different looking dog when you come back. I've been calling him Willy as first suggested by Keith. But Keith has since changed his mind. Now he's apparently settled on calling him Roscoe. Roscoe's doing great. He gained 1 1/2 pounds in under a week. Looks a whole lot better. Probably got some Shepard in him. Certainly is smart like one. Very happy puppy right now. And absolutely as sweet as he looks. Check out Roscoe's picture. His new Daddy took him home last night. This is going to be one very good looking dog!
  5. Re: the weirdest lobster I have seen [ QUOTE ] we cought this one today in one of our traps and I am thinking on getting it mounted [/ QUOTE ] I seriously doubt the color will be preserved by mounting it. Don't waste a good meal
  6. Re: Got a hunt invite Tomorrow afternoon I was thwarted by a car driving thru the area I was hunting. (Yep they had a right to be there) Oh well maybe I'll get another chance. Still a fun hunt.
  7. Re: Rhino/Nitro, deadly results..... [ QUOTE ] That'll get it done. Just don't let them get too close. [/ QUOTE ] DING! DING! That's an excellent point. If you do find yourself having to take a point blank shot (it happens) aim just above the beard. That noggin moves too much to hit with a softball size pattern The bird I shot this year was close enough the wad punched thru him and my pattern was about the size of a grapefruit. Just above the beard works just fine.
  8. Wish me luck y'all. My buddy nailed his Sat 10 1/4" beard, 17lbs, 3/4" spurs (a nice one). I'm going to the same spot tomorrow. I know there's a least one more in this area. Gonna need your best wishes folks. Gobblers are all gifts from God as far as I'm concerned. Wrestling with the decision to try the bow. 30yds I feel pretty confident. Further than that, I probably shouldn't try.
  9. Re: Sunday Morning, One Turkey, 6 Beards That's an absolutely fabulous trophy gobbler there!!! Multiple beards drive the NWTF score up big time. Each one gets added, that's alot of beard points there. Bird's got some nice hooks too.
  10. Re: Some \"Track Players\" Ready to Hunt............ Nice work Redbeard!! I make my own slates too. But they ain't so purty. BTW carbon arrow shafts make great striker stems

    Wish me Luck!

Re: Wish me Luck! Good luck. Let's see a Nebraska bird
  14. Re: 2 Live Hen Questions (Poll) [ QUOTE ] Maybe it's that my hearing sucks but here at home I hear far more hens do nothing more than softly cluck on the roost prior to fly down rather than tree yelp. It's rare to hear the classic cackle of a hen flying down or up to the roost here too. The vast majority of them just cut. [/ QUOTE ] Do what the birds do where you hunt They don't get the Outdoor Channel

    Mouth calls

Re: Mouth calls [ QUOTE ] You know, I had a heck of a problem with mouth calls and thought it was me and how I was using them until I bought a set of the Lohman's Woodsman Pack (3). They were really easy to learn to use and they seem to work well for me. I called in 2 tom's last year for my brother in law and myself. They were going nuts, and I was shearly amazed that they were that interested. I would suggest maybe just trying a different kind or brand of mouth call. You might be suprised. [/ QUOTE ] There are three ways to purr with a mouth call. Vibrating you uvela (kinda like a Germanic "G" noise) Fluttering you tongue (hard but can be done) Fluttering your lips like a horse snort (make sure you lick your lips before you do it, wet lips work better) Adding a little natural voice too your calls can really step it up a notch. You can still make noise with your voice box even if you are not moving your lips or tongue.
  17. Re: Gotta be thankful I got this one The seasons young. God will decide how the rest of it goes
  18. Re: Gotta be thankful I got this one [ QUOTE ] Congrats! Is it just me or is there 2 birds in the top pic? [/ QUOTE ] Yep! There was actually 2 others with the one in the distance. Good eye
  19. Re: an osceola for team 19 Sure see why Osceolas are known for awesome spurs. That's an outstanding set on that one. Old bird. You did great.
  20. Thanks everyone for prayers and well wishes. I needed them. The first few days of turkey hunting this year were extremely eventful. I worked at least nine different Toms. Had some very close calls. Quite a few stories to tell about that. Maybe when I have more energy. Even though I can't chase gobblers anymore and have to stay committed to a blind the whole hunt. I'm pretty wore out right now. In short, this longbeard finally got within range. In fact, real real close, only 15 yards. Gotta before picture Pattern from my shotgun at that range is about the size of a softball. So I literally had to shoot with rifle like accuracy. Also I had to aim for the area just above the beard instead of the head/neck region at that range. Aiming for the head at that range almost guarantees a miss because the head moves back and forth four to five inches with every step. I hit him with all 2 1/4oz of #4 shot, plus the wad clearly went through the bird like a slug. Unfortunately, this shot tore up the beard pretty badly. It shortened what was longer than nine inches to 8 1/2". Still a solid 2yr old with 3/4" spurs and weighed about 17lbs. Not the biggest I've seen this season so far but still a good one.
  21. Re: Anything to dampen the pain?? A simms pad + a mercury recoil reducer in the magazine replacing the plug works great Plus if you add one of those butt stock ammo carriers and keep it full of turkey loads that helps too. Sure my gun's heavy but I can shoot a box of 10 3 1/2" turkey loads wearing only a T-shirt.
  22. Re: What Triggers The Breeding Season???? Tends to happen very close to first day of spring around here.
  23. Re: Walker\'s Game Ear (or similar products) I have the Radians and so far really like them. They did whine at first until I adjusted them right when I put on a headnet. Basically, don't let the net get near the pickup on the units and you're fine. They do work pretty darn good in my opinion.
  24. Got an invite. I'm going. Two days We know there are several decent gobblers in the area. Scouting has revealed their presence. The decoys are ready. Calls chalked and sanded. Blinds are set up. We have a plan Now if it's all going to come together for a successful hunt. That is for God to decide. Wish me luck my friends. I believe we will need it.

    string loops

Re: string loops Eliminates release torque. Arrows don't fall off if you have to let your draw down (this happens all the time with a release under arrow on the bowstring). Not nearly as hard on a release as a metal loop, nor as hard on the bowstring. You also run a very real risk of splitting a nock with a short axle to axle bow if you try attaching the release below the arrow on the bowstring. This can cause dry fires and exploding arrows. In short, YES!
