Re: Tick repellant Permanone is actually more than just permithrin. It uses an added ingredient that makes it especially deadly to crawlies. If a tick crawls on clothing treated with it he's finished. But if a tick can get to the inside of your clothing that's untreated it will. Tuck your shirt and tape your boot cuffs.

Re: NEED ADVICE......is this a shooter ?? I would guess that's a 170s class deer. Not that you need to take the time to evaluate him. He says "SHOOTER!" all over

Re: Muzzy Zero-Effect The MZE rest is a great rest, if it's put on right. A seemingly insignificant Boo-Boo like crossing the cables above instead of below the rest, makes quite a difference. The instructions actually tell you whether they should cross above or below for your SPECIFIC bow. So make sure you read that. Lots of shop "pros" miss that detail. Making certain they cross in the same area before the rest was installed is no guarantee it's right. I'm sold on the MZE. I have a whisker biscuit on my other bow. And I certainly feel the MZE is a better rest.

Re: Digital Camera [ QUOTE ] The best thing to do is to "google" reviews on digital cameras. That is what I did and found that the Canon is one of the best cameras made. A Canon camera showed up more often at the top than any other brand. I purchased a Canon Powershot S3 with 12x optical zoom and 6 megapixels for $395 shipped. The Canon Powershot S2 is nearly the same camera except for it has 5 megapixels and has a few less options. The S3 is only an upgrade from last years S2. I know you can find the S2 for under $300. If I had a choice for under $300, that is what I would get. Do some research and look at reviews. Most the time they will tell you the good and bad of each camera and you can fit it to your needs. [/ QUOTE ] This is super advice. I'm a major Canon fan. IS stands for image stabilization, and at high zooms or low light, it really makes a HUGE difference. I bought the telephoto adapter for mine and you can see ticks in a deer's ear 80yds away with it I will just add a couple items. 1. Keep your receipt for the ENTIRE length of the warranty. Registering the camera does not guarantee warranty term. The only thing that does that is date of purchase on the receipt. 2. Don't get bit by the Megapixel Bug. Good lenses make good pictures NOT big CCDs It's cheaper to make a camera with a Large MP CCD and substandard optics. With a good lense a 5mp camera takes better pictures than a 7mp camera with a cheasy lense, everytime. So you're way better off to concentrate on lense diameter, optical zoom power and make. About 5MP is a great starting point. 3. Companys that make regular film cameras build better digitals because they KNOW lenses.

Re: Anyone use a G5 sight? Only complaint I've heard about the site is there apparently isn't very much adjustment in it. On some setups that's fine, but on others you may not be able to move the pins where you need to.

Re: Need Advice! on Nocturnal Deer The corn feeder itself can contribute to the deer becoming nocturnal. It essentially becomes a guaranteed midnight snack.

Re: Super Carbon Arrows? I was the head engineer in a composites industry for years before I was medically retired and I can promise you that there will come a day when people ask you "why do you still shoot carbon?" I'd be interested to hear exactly what this guy had. There is better stuff out there to use for arrows than what we consider the "ultimate" now. I assure you

Re: Thinking of completely erasing my computer Defrag is a good suggestion. Spyware scanning is as necessary as Virus scanning. Try some of the online scans available like bitdefender. Keep in mind virus scanners DON'T always automatically clean up bugs. Many viruses plug into Windows system restore and re-infect as soon as you reboot. Be sure to read the removal notes for each virus you find. Nobody's virus/spyware scanner finds them all. Don't believe anyone who tells you theirs will. If you can't fix it. Obviously backup what you have and you can reinstall windows. But first make sure you have all the right disks to do a "CLEAN" install. Just an UPGRADE Windows disk without the original version disk will have you trecking to the nearest software dealer to get a FULL version of Windows.

A friend of mine uses them and really likes them. They sure beat refletching as far as he's concerned. Don't however try these in anything but a drop away or a whisker biscuit.

Re: what weight heads Your Front of Center balance should be almost exactly where you want it with 100gr heads. Unless your shooting feathers then I would back down to the 85gr head. IMO 125's will be way too nose heavy on that little arrow.

Re: I\'m wanting to buy a camera and need help... [ QUOTE ] I just bought my wife a Canon Powershot S3 IS today for her B-Day. I ordered it online for $395. By looking at all the reviews, this camera came up as one of the top end cameras for the price. When it gets in I will take it to the field and take some pics. I will let you know how it performs. [/ QUOTE ] That's a great deal on that camera! Go ahead and plan on buying a 1GB card. You probably won't fill one up with pictures. But the camera takes great video shorts and those take quite a bit more space on the card.

Re: What DPI actually is. Bill, I'm sorry if you took this post as a personal attack. I had a lot of confusion about this issue my self. I thought I clued into the fact that I was not alone. So I'm hoping to clear it up for everyone. That being stated, here's a real example of what I'm hoping will finally clear it all up. This picture is 72DPI 504x469 pixels This one is 180DPI 504x469 pixels Both look the same on everyones screen regardless of their computer screen resolution. Both files are also exactly the same size. If you decide to print them both the same physical size they will look exactly the same. There will be no difference in print resolution. This is because both pictures are the same pixel x pixel size and have undergone exactly the same level of JPG compression. Please feel free to save copies of these photos to your hard drive and examine their properties. This is no computer geek trick, this just illustrates what DPI really is. What DPI is not is something that affects how something looks on a computer screen, how it prints or how big a file the photo is. With two real examples I hope this makes sense to everyone.
-
Re: What DPI actually is. Depends on what you consider "SIZE" to mean. A 7x7 inch photo at 96DPI will be sharper than a 7x7 photo at 72DPI. This is certainly true. But the 7x7 photo at 96DPI will need to have a pixel size of 672x672 versus the 7x7 photo at 72DPI having only 504x504 pixels. Your computer cannot add the detail from 504 to 672 pixels. Increasing a 72 DPI 504x504 photo to 96DPI simply shrinks it's inch size to 5.25 x 5.25. The photo is still 504x504 pixels. Your file size will remain exactly the same. DPI is only valuable if you are resizing photos on an inch x inch basis. DPI and inchxinch sizes are merely attributes of a digital file and have no bearing whatsoever on the file size. Contrary to what quite a few believe, your DPI value won't make a difference in how your photos print out. That's controlled by the PPI setting of your print and the actual pixel x pixel size of your photo. PPI and DPI are different and that's another source of confusion. Bottomline, a 7x7 photo at 72x72dpi is 504x504pixels.

The problems in the latest photo contest underlined this subject isn't exactly understood by quite a few people. I count myself among those folks. So I did a bunch of research and actually got a program myself that would edit DPI. I downloaded infraview from the link posted on the "problem with contest" thread. Thank you ruttinbuc What DPI is: 1. DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. DPI times the inch size of the photo yields the number of pixels. So a photo that is sized to 7"x7" at 72x72 DPI will be 504x504 pixels. 2. DPI is an attribute tag. Like the date of modification. What DPI is NOT 1. DPI does not affect file size. The exact same 504x504 pixel photo can be set to 96DPI. As long as you use the same parent photo (see Note) to make the 72 and 96 DPI versions, the file size will NOT change. But the inch size of the photo will change from 7"x7" to 5.25"x5.25" 2. DPI has nothing to do with screen resolution. Whatever your desktop size is set to the photo will show up on the screen in full pixel by pixel size. Unless the pixel x pixel size of the photo is LARGER than your desktop size. Then whatever viewing software or browser you are using will rescale the photo appropriately. 3. DPI also doesn't affect print size of the photo. Printing software programs will fit the pixels into whatever size paper you select. The more pixels the better the printed points per inch and higher the quality of the photo. NOTE: JPG format is a compression format that gets applied to the PHOTO when you save it. The amount of compression is dependent on the Quality settings of your photo software. Most of the time your DPI changes to whatever the default is for that software. But it is the JPG quality settings that change the file size NOT the DPI value. This is why you should use the same Parent Photo to make two different DPI photos. Otherwise it is possible to recompress a already compressed photo. I hope this has been helpful and not too repetitive for some. I just felt pretty confused about this before and thought I'd share with those who may have been in the same boat.

Re: ***Blown ear drum, I am miserable**** I know you don't feel this way now. But be very very thankful the infection blew out the eardrum and didn't go the other direction. It's rare, but if an inner ear infection goes into your brain it can most certainly KILL you. Ear infections aren't anything to toy with. Everyone should take them seriously. I blew out both eardrums in my accident 3 yrs ago. Besides my many other injuries I incurred. The diagnosis was I would be completely deaf in one ear and have hardly any hearing ability in the other. Miraculously, both eardrums healed. I can hear normally except for tinnitus (ringing) in my left ear. So keep the faith. It still counts as one of my most painful experiences. When they removed the plug of blood and wax from one ear. Dramamine helps alot with the dizziness and vertigo associated with inner ear problems. Your doctor may have prescribed "Anti-Vert". Same thing as Dramamine.

Re: Broadhead VS Bone? The Cabela's Lazerhead is a pretty close copy to the Rocket Aerohead Sidewinder 3L. The Cabela's heads are substantially cheaper. My guess is probably a little lower grade aluminum is being used in the body to cut costs. Anyhow, I don't see why the Sidewinder 3L should not fly almost exactly the same. Not gonna give any bowhunter any grief about hitting shoulder blades. Especially on exit. Quartering away shots are very lethal. You'll hit the opposite shoulder almost everytime though. Heads breaking up then as the deer runs off with it is to be expected. But the tip busting off on entry would certainly concern me.

Re: Ground Blinds? Ground blinds are way more effective for deer if they have been there awhile. When I first started using them I didn't see the first deer out of one until I finally had one in the same place a couple weeks. On public land, I hate to say it, it's alot more likely to get stolen, if you try that

Re: Bow-Tech? I don't have one but I have heard so many good things about the Bowtech Old Glory that if I was in the market for a new bow I guarantee I would at least test shoot one a couple times.

Re: Logging and bowhunting Treat like a new piece of property you're hunting. Deer routes and habits will change but they usually don't leave. Pre-season scouting, including sitting a stand armed with only a camera is a good idea. Start with stands that have the most visibility and figure out the best bowhunting areas from there.

Re: So Much For KIA! IMO I don't care WHOSE vehicle it is. If the motor has a timing belt instead of a timing chain and you don't change it every 60,000miles you're asking for trouble. BTW, lots of different manufacturers have belts instead of chains in their cars. Timing chains are often good up to 200,000 but don't push it. There are plenty of things that can shorten the life of a chain too. These aren't items you wait to break before you replace them. The expense after one breaks is much higher.

Re: I\'m wanting to buy a camera and need help... I feel like a broken record recommending this camera but it really is that good. Canon Powershot S2 IS has a 12X optical lense and 5mp sensor in it. The image stabilization really helps those long telephoto shots. I got the optional telephoto lense attachment for this camera and snapped this picture at full digital and optical zoom. The deer was at least 70yds away. All I did was resize it for web posting. Since the S3 is now out prices on the S2 are dropping quick. This was a $500 camera you now can find it for under $300. The camera is also bundled with great stitching software for enormous landscape photos and decent image editing software. In addition it's pictbridge capable allowing you to print from the camera hooked to any pictbridge capable printer.

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This! I had the same problem Buckee had because I too use the MGI software. I couldn't find it on there either Buckee My wife's sister's computer has Microsoft Picture It on it. It allows you to manipulate DPI and pixel size. Luckily I was able to make the changes from her computer. The pixel size that software came up with for my photo was 480 x 360. That's probably just a safe size for my uncropped photos. As a suggestion for the future, since inch size and DPI causes so much confusion. And since it's coming to light that some software programs don't directly access DPI or Inch size. A pixel by pixel size limit and a file size limit may be more appropriate for forum photo contests. Good luck everyone, Leo

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This! Sorry Bill, I was thinking I was under the inch requirement and really thought I was OK. But I checked it again and it turns out I was still at 96DPI. I resized it to 72DPI. So now it is less than or equal to both maximums (7" and 72DPI) just to be safe.
