...finally connected on my black bear...
Leo replied to aksheephuntress's topic in Big Game & Exotics
Well done Kathleen. Say hi to Terry and the kids from Mary and me! -
Eastern Cape of South Africa? Looks like you had a great time. Congrats!

I use the Lee Hand Priming tool. I think it gives you a little more control over the operation than priming cases with the press. It's also a lot faster. I use the Lee Powder measure as well. It is a big time saver to throw the bulk of the charge but I still weigh and trickle each individual charge after I throw it with the measure. Stick powders in powder measures will vary.

Sure you can. Weatherby makes rifles in 300 Win mag.

Some broadhead tuning had a good chance of bringing those muzzies back to the point of impact you wanted. Just paper tuning and walk back tuning often isn't enough for fixed heads. The fine tuning effects of broadhead tuning will benefit the accuracy of all heads you shoot. The major point of broadhead tuning is optimizing the draw weight of your bow for the spine of the arrow you are using. I'd also suggest if you are using 100gr heads to step up to 125's. That extra 25% head weight will in many cases really improve penetration.

I've had these for quite awhile. I just opened the box today to make sure they hadn't turned green on me. They are fine. I taped the box back shut after I took a peak. This is a full box of 50 original Barnes X bullets in 30cal 180 grn. $25 to your door.

Sure is great you stopped by and gave us an update. Hope everything goes smoothly with the house! The fishing trip is a very tempting thing! Every bit of travel money I've got is going to Africa this year.
-
I've taken stuff with Muzzies, Thunderheads, Montecs, Sidewinders and Stricknines. They all work! Some broadheads fly better in some setups than others. I sold my Montecs this year not because I don't like them. I do like them. They just aren't flying great on the two dozen arrows I just got. I changed arrows and that changed some things. If they were 125gr versus 100gr they would probably do just fine. The one 125gr Striker I have flies very accurately. Right now out of the heads I have the most of, the Stricknines and Slicktricks are flying the most accurately on these new arrows. So those heads are what I'm taking to Africa.

EXACTLY! That's a major point of doing tuning, it makes ALL your arrows fly better. Even if you don't plan on hunting with fixed heads, broadhead tuning will help you fine tune. 1. Paper tune 2. Walk back tune 3. Broadhead tune My bow wasn't shooting real bad before but it is shooting much better now. The effort was worth it.

Thanks Buckee. It has taken me weeks and a lot of shooting to get everything dialed in just right. I've done more broadhead shooting the past couple of weeks than I have in a long long time. Up to now 50 yards was the max I'd shot broadheads at on a range. The only reason I did the 60 yard shoot was to calibrate my sight tape for broadheads. It's been a very productive last couple of weeks. I'm gearing up to be ready for Africa end of August. Gonna need to sell some stuff to be able to hunt an Eland on this trip.

Nope! I'm not getting cocky! I can still miss! Just can't blame the bow now!

I absolutely am tickled Rhino! I am especially pleased that these are two broadhead tipped arrows with different broadheads on them. A Slicktrick fixed head and a Rocket Mechanical.

Did some 60 yard broadhead shooting today. Shooting at this distance was necessary to calibrate my sight tape on my HHA slider sight. This is a 125 gr Slicktrick standard and a 125 gr Rocket Stricknine. I am much more comfortable limiting my shots to 40 yds and under but I wanted the most accurate sight tape selection possible. I also wanted it to be correct for the broadheads I use. I didn't want to change sight tapes just before the hunt, so I've been doing a lot of broadhead practice lately. The Slicktrick fixed heads fly as good as the Rocket Stricknine mechanicals out to 60 yards! I was impressed. I've done a lot of bow tuning to get to this point. I'm very happy with the results!

Here's the results of getting the windage right on the sight after broadhead tuning. I used broadhead tuning to optimize my draw weight for the arrows I'm shooting. 68.5 lbs is the magic number for my setup. More or less draw weight and the broadheads hit left or right of the fieldpoint. I can certainly pull heavier but this is the draw weight my setup shoots the best. This is a 20 yard target with three different heads. Slicktrick 125 standard, Rocket Stricknine 125 and a 125gr field point. Now it's time to calibrate the sight tape.

Slick Trick and Field Point at 33 yards. First thing I did was get the nock point height right. Confirmed it at 20 and 33 yards. Broadheads and fieldpoints were hitting the same elevation. The broadheads were now grouping on the left side of the field points. So I cranked the bow weight adjustment up 1/4 turn per limb. Then the broadheads started grouping on the right side of the field points. So I turned it down an eighth turn each limb and now the slicktricks and field points are hitting in the same spot. Enough for today. Too tired to shoot anymore. It was a good day! First order of business next time I shoot is to confirm that everything is still right. This is Easton's broadhead tuning diagram if anyone is interested. It pretty much tells you everything you need to do. I do recommend you walk back tune to make sure your rest left to right is correct before you do this.

This is a really good technique! I use the aluminum foil method myself. You got a lot more smoke out of much less wood than you would any other way. This way works really really well!

A good friend of mine shot a bunch of PSE bows a while back. He spoke very highly of the Bow Madness. He said it's a very smooth and forgiving bow. I am pretty sure it was the XL he was shooting.
-
Yep I got a 33yard pin. 34,35,36...60! LOL! It's a HHA Optimizer Lite Ultra 5519 Bow Sight model DS-XL5519. It's a "slider" sight (more correctly this one is geared). I'm still setting it up. Once you get the 20 and 60yard settings you put on the right sight tape and you can dial in any range between 20 and 60. I'm working my way back to the 60yd setting. I need it to be as accurate as possible. That's why I'm shooting broadheads for set up. This sight is gonna be setup for hunting. It is the sight shown at the bottom of this page. http://www.hhasports.com/sights/opt_lite_ultra.htm

About the same. I think I've got the bow tuned in right it's just a matter of me practicing more to shoot tighter groups. Right now the bow is shooting better than me.
-
I tape the mechanical shut with electrical tape and always shoot the fixed first. That makes it harder to mess one up.
-
Yeah, I know it's low still adjusting my sights. BTW, this is three different heads at 33 yards. 125 grain Field point, 125 grain Rocket Stricknine and 125 grain Slicktrick Standard. This is the first time I've shot with this new sight at this distance. I am pleased to get three different heads to group this well at 33 yards.

Nope you definitely can't get dursban anymore. If you've got a real serious infestation it's worth calling an exterminator. They have access to the most powerful pesticides.
