  2. Re: Price of Lumber these days.................Geez. I don't see how anyone can afford to build a home these days! It's only going to get more expensive, as we are in a global market with China & India buying up all the supplies (thanks to NAFTA & GATT!)
  3. Re: Speer\'s 150 Gr. Mag-Tip For .308 Win.? [ QUOTE ] The Winchester 150gr. Silvertips work real good for deer with my .308 [/ QUOTE ] Thanks! But is that the Old Silvertip or the new one?
  4. Re: new shotgun [ QUOTE ] looking at buying a new shotgun.right now i am shooting a marlin 512 bolt action rifled barrel scope.;nice gun but i want a semi-auto with a rifled barrled.what do you guys like????thanks for the help. [/ QUOTE ] I own a Growning Gold Deer Hunter in 20 gauge which I find to be an excellent & accurate Deer Gun. I have a 2-7 power Leupold VX-1 Shotgun Scope mounted on it. Remington "Buckhammer" sabots & Lightfields, are awesome in it!
  5. Re: cannot believe the new TN regs [ QUOTE ] They have now made it legal in TN to shoot game from a motorized vehicle, so long as it is not able to be licensed for highway usage. They changed the centerfire rifle from a minimum of .24 to now be that ANY centerfire rifle is legal . Just dont understand what whoever is responsible for making these types of changes is thinking . [/ QUOTE ] Sometimes it's hard to figure, who makes up these laws & Regulation for States' DNR's. I was shocked when Indiana passed a ruling making the .410 slug legal for Deer!
  6. Re: Speer\'s 150 Gr. Mag-Tip For .308 Win.? Thanks for the advice Guys.
  7. How do you Guys feel about Speer's 150 grain MagTip's?? Do you think this type bullet is okay for Deer and will it offer enough expansion at .308 velocity (2,700 FPS)?? <Thanks>

  9. Re: Need Suggestions [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Don't shoot what you like, shoot what it likes. It might be 100 grs of loose or pellets or even BP. Though it may like a tad more. Most BP guns don't shoot theri best at a max 150 gr charge, though it does make some feel like they are sending theri best. Bullets are an entirely different puzzle. Buy and try that's my advise. [/ QUOTE ] I hear ya,, my fathers CVA shoots more accurately with 100grns. of powder than the recommended 150grns.... I will be trying a few varieties of sabots to see what matches up the best.... I just wanted a starting point, if there's such a thing.. [/ QUOTE ] A good starting point for a .50 caliber M/L is 80 grains (Volume) + your chosen bullet. My experience is that any charge over 100 grains is just a waste of powder, and your accuracy usually falls off past that point.
  10. Re: Need Suggestions While I don't have the same M/L as you have; I own a T/C Black Diamond in .50 Cal. I've found the most accurate load that is still suitable for Deer is: 90 grains (Volume) of loose "Triple 7" FG behind a T/C Highpressure sabot containing a .452" Hornady XTP 250 grain bullet, fired by a 209 primer. I've never had any luck with pellets charges of powder.

  13. An interesting sight about Winchester : http://www.savewinchester.com/
  14. Re: favorite gun of choice? [ QUOTE ] wats your favorite gun when it comes to whitetails? [/ QUOTE ] Here in Indiana, we are restricted on equipment use for Deer. Therefore my favorite gun is my Browning Gold Deer Hunter in 20 gauge, have a 2-7 power Leupold shotgun scope on it. Now for Ky Deer Hunting I like to use my Ruger M-77MKII in .270 Win. and it has a Redfield wideview 3 to 9 power scope. I use my T/C Black Diamond .50 M/L for both States.
  15. Re: Value [ QUOTE ] What's a Model 88 Winchester lever action in .308 worth. Gun is used but in good condition. The guy won't sell it ....yet lol. [/ QUOTE ] I saw a Winchester M-88 in .308 in the past gunshow in my area. The Winchester was used and it looked to be in excellent shape. The dealer was asking $600.
  16. Re: Accuracy Question For \"AJ\" [ QUOTE ] I take it you can not get consistant groups as the shots are stringing high? It could be a few things. 1. What was your rest? if you were resting the forend on a hard surface, it will make the shot go high. The similar anomaly happens if the rest is too soft, the shot will go low. 2. Is the scope slipping in the rings? I chased that one a while back and it about drove me nuts till I found it. 3. It could be a bedding problem. Like i always say, all bolt action guns need a proper bedding job, be it glass bedding or pillar bedding. 4. Might it be the shooters trigger hand? If you are pulling down with the trigger hand, it will change the action pressure points and cause problems with groups. Place a sandbag under your trigger hand to support it while you shoot. It can make a huge difference. [/ QUOTE ] AJ, I think I found the problem but I will need further testing to be sure. When I returned home, I removed the barreled action from the stock and found a "High" spot near the end of the forearm. I used some sandpaper wrapped around a wooden 1" dowl and removed the high spot to where the barrel is floating from action on toward the muzzle. I'll try shooting a group and see if this procedure will help. The barrel is of significant weight to support floating as the barrel does not "wiggle" in the stock channel. If it does need some support I'll glass bed the barrel & action. When I target shoot, I use a "Harris bypod for front support and a regular sand bag for rear support. Used this method of shooting for years with no problems. Scope mounts & Rings are all tight. Also having some Arthitis in my right had doesn't help much! <Thanks for your suggestions & Help AJ!>
  17. AJ, This morning I took my Remington M-673 guide rifle bolt action, in .308 Win., up to the shooting range and fired it @ 100 yards. I am using 45.0 grs / IMR-4064 / 150 Speer Mag-tips loaded in Remington Brass. Well, I am receiving good accuracy as far as "windage" is concerned but the rifle want to shoot about 3.5" too high. This is the first chance I got around to firing this rifle and I am puzzled as to why it is shooting High even when I adjust the horzontal part of the scope, which is a Leupold 2-7 power scope. Do you think it might be as bedding problem or just the shooter (ME)??? Thanks in advance!

    tinks 69

Re: tinks 69 What is really funny, is some Hunters use things like "Apple scents" and other things that are not present, in the area they hunt. The Deer smell these strange scents and are spooked.
  20. Re: I-----HATE-----DIAL-UP!!!!!! When I first started using a computer & the internet in 1997; I also had Dial-up. Now after I bought my current PC which has windows XP; I switched over to Broadband cable connection. It seems, and most "IT's" will agree, that with the newer PC's, the only way to benifit fully from your more up-to-date PC is to subscribe to Broadband connection. Unfortunately broadban is not available everywhere yet. I for one would give up using the internet if I had to return to S-L-O-W dial-up connection.
  21. Re: Cost $85 to fill up my truck! I just "top off" my gas tank in my RAV-4 each week, actually buying and replacing the gas that I used. Prices, in my area of Indiana, are running about $2.90/Gal!
  22. Re: 45 or 50 I would buy the .50 caliber. You can use sabots of .452" jacketed bullets in it, which is a .45 cal.

  24. Re: Any Morel Mushrooms yet ? I've haven't found many mushrooms since the early 1990's. There are too many Deer, Squirrels, and other critters that get them before I have a chance to hunt them!

    tinks 69

Re: tinks 69 I use "Tink 69" each Deer season and had very good results. What I do is place about 3 oz in a Drip Bag, make a "mock scrape" and place the drip bag about a week before Gun Season. If there are any buck around they come to it.
