Re: Just dont get it-what happens HMM,that sounds like exactly the same scenario that I've seen this season. I've hunted this spot for like ten years,and have only not seen deer a handfull of times.Well,this season I bowhunted this spot the day before shotgun season,and saw 5 different bucks that were shooters to me,and a couple of little bucks and a handfull of does.Openeing morning comes and it sounds like I'm at the shooting range,but never saw a single deer.These guys put stands up about every 200 yards along the field edge,and shoot anything that moves.This whole group of guys must have tagged out by the second morning because they never came back after that.I hunted this spot hard for 7 days,and never seen a buck,and only seen does twice,and both times I managed to bag one.It is very frustrating knowing how good this spot is until gun season gets here.I sat there 7 mornings and 7 evenings and seen deer twice....I don't know what else could be causing this to happen.

Re: Who is starting to wrap thier seasons up? I've got till mid January.At times I do get sorta burnt out,but by the end of the next week I can't wait to get out there again.

Illinois doesn't allow it either,but I don't see what the big deal is.It would give someone that doesn't regularly get a deer a chance to at least use their tag,but on the other hand I don't want someone else to fill mine,but this is something that could be worked out within your hunting party.

Re: deer processing It is possible if the deer was shot a few times.I have a buddy that complained about the same thing,but he shot the deer 4 times and ruined quite a bit of meat.If that's not the case I would find somewhere else to take it.Generally,if you weigh the animal after it is gutted,you can expect to get about half that weight in meat from the processor.

Re: cleaning and hanging deer No running water where I hunt,so I usually just make sure no junk is in there and drop it off.If I need to I just pour a little water on and wipe the dirt out with a rag.

Re: How far will you shoot at a deer? I'll practice out to 40 yards,but won't shoot at a deer unless he's inside 30.

I didn't see a single deer Sunday morning again.Over the last few years I can count on one hand the times I've hunted this spot and not seen a single deer,and this year I've hunted this spot 8 days, and only seen deer twice!I'm not sure what's going on. I got my doe entered this morning,so that's 5 more points for the team,and I have one weekend of muzzleloader hunting and 5 weeks of bow hunting to try and bag a nice buck,so we'll see what happens.

Re: What\'s on your slugger?? I had the tru-glo sights put on my gun two years ago. My gun is a Winchester 1300 with a rifled barrel and the scope I bought is a Bushnell Sportsman 1.5-4.5 shotgun scope ,in Realtree Hardwoods of course.I think I'll try it again this summer,but I'll probably get it laser bore sighted to start off with this time so I'm in the ballpark when I sight it in.Last time I shot $55 worth of sabots and came home with a cut nose and eyebrow.

Well,my weekend has been pretty crazy so far to say the least.I went up to deer camp for our second shotgun season and hunted in rain all day Thursday without ever seeing a deer.Friday morning we wake up to about a half inch of ice and 4" of snow,but about 40 mph winds and once again-no deer.I get back to camp after the mornings hunt and everybodies trucks are running and they're all loading up to hurry back home because all our houses had power outages so we had to get my generator passed around to and take care of the families.It took about an hour to get all the truck doors open and get the windshields cleaned off.We head out and my grandpa gets his truck stuck in the mud.I hook to it and practically drug it the 3/4 mile to the hard road,all the while having to get out and cut fallen branches out of the lane the whole way.All the ice left branches and limbs EVERYWHERE.It was definately a journey to get back home.We get home and take care of business and I went back up by myself this morning.It was absolutely perfect!Cold,calm,and 4" of snow is hard to beat for hunting,and I had the whole farm to myself!I did see a lot of deer finally, and end up taking another big doe at 8:30,and I'm heading back up tomorrow to try and get a buck with my muzzleloader.

Re: REALLY BAD WEATHER I'm leaving for deer camp tomorrow morning around 4,so I'll beat it,but there will be a lot of hunters that will be driving during the heart of it so everyone be safe.
