I think when a buck sheds the socket where the antler once was is soft.If the buck were to die before it healed it would be pourous when dried. The locals upstate Pa. tell me when the elk shed some bleed like a stuffed pig from where the antler once was. If the pedicle on the bottom of the shed and the skull fit together tight I'd say it's a match.Who knows!! I found 3 sets off the same buck and all antlers were dropped within 200yds. of each other over those 3 yrs.The forth year I found a big bodied buck that had already shed 20yds from where 2 of the antlers were found.I left the skull hoping the elements and the critters would clean it up.When I went back to get it somebody else already took it. I believe it was the same buck that I had the 3 sets off of.I never found anymore sheds off that buck too.

Re: Matched Sets of Sheds. I've found matched sets side by side and up to a 1/2 mile apart.The mystery of shedhunting,join the club. Good luck finding that other half. Keep searching further out from that first antler and cross your fingers.

Re: Keeping my eye on Urban bucks Sounds like the same situation they have upstate Pa. with the elk.The elk up there feed in the yards on the green grass and many times drop in the yards.

I've got a few areas that produce sheds year after year.Sometimes within yards of where they were found the year before.One buck I found his matched sets back to back years 100yds apart. Now the county is trying to cut back the herds and most my areas are going to pot.

Re: A Good Day!! Thanks guys!! It was a great day,but those bigger sheds still have mates laying. The area I found these sheds in is a big area covering a couple different farms.I'd say a couple square miles.Within that same area there was two smaller areas that produced 13 of the 21 sheds.The remaining finds for the day were scattered all around the place. The 2 smaller areas where the 13 sheds were found could both be searched together in a little over an hour doing a grid pattern search covering everything. I made another trip back covereing those 2 hot areas and found another 5 sheds.Only 1 was a mate to a shed I already found and 2 were matched set off a spike buck. I'm still trying to figure out where those other mates are.

I thought these turned out pretty good.The lamp on the left the legs came off a small 4pt. I shot with the rifle in 2003.The lamp on the right off my bow kill from 2004.
