Our season opens Monday here in NY. Gonna try to get out. Making plans for Texas in Early November.

Glad your trip was a success Ross. That is one heck of a amount of birds! Hope you had a nice Benelli or Beretta to ease that recoil. Interesting info about the rattlers. That survival process they have adapted means trouble for humans.

Happy birthday to your son. These are special times. Enjoy them. Happy Anniversary too! I have been running back and forth to deer camp getting the place ready for the season. I am having the trailer leveled and reskirted. The wind has been howling through it for far too long stealing heat. Tomorrow is my son Joes engagement party. We are having a pig roast at Joes future in laws house. Expecting over 100 people! Then back up to camp Sunday because the guys are working, they gonna want to get paid, plus Monday is opening day of bow season here in NYs southern zone.

The democraps are making these conformation hearings a joke.

Thanks William. It is a very rewarding day. Look forward to it each year.

We had another great day at Congers lake Park. The weather was perfect. Over 250 people came to shoot bows at our range. Many women showed interest. Which is great having my future daughter in law there. She is great with kids and women. Sometimes it gets crazy with kids looking to shoot. We had one kid pick up a bow when no one was looking(Mathews Genesis micro) and dry fire it. Of course it came off its cam scared the crap out of the little kid. At that point we had to be a little mean with people management. Not everyone listens about wandering out onto the shooting field. We take over a small baseball field and try to limit access. Even some adults were difficult. Everyone wanted to shoot. This was a totally free day, so people were getting the most out of it. But all in all. It was a rewarding day. When a kid hits the target, let alone a bullseye. The smile is priceless. A few pics of the day.

Volunteering at National Hunting and Fishing day teaching folks how to shoot bows Saturday. Sunday I will be headed up to deer camp to get the place ready for cold weather. Most likely stay there 3 or 4 days. Gonna order 2 cords of wood. Early bear closes on the 23rd this month, our bow season starts Oct 1st. Might take a walk around property. Leaves are dropping in full force. Be safe everyone.

This Saturday is Nat'l Hunting and Fishing day. A nationwide event. Check link to see if there is a event taking place close to you. http://www.nhfday.org/Page/Events.aspx This will be my 8th year(representing NY Bowhunters) handling the archery range with volunteers at our NHFD. Our Countys Sportsmans Federation, started it and is sponsoring the event. Fun filled day where everything is free, except food. Kids get free cane poles all set up with bait. Area stores donate. Taxidermists, fly fishing demos, dog retrieval demos ect. DEC declares a no license needed day at this lake. It is all about exposing others to the outdoors. We spend 6 solid hours of helping people fling sticks, bows/arrows and targets bought with grants from the Friends of the NRA. 50% of the money raised at Friends of the NRA events come back to the county in the form of grants promoting the outdoor sports. I am proud to say I am on that committee also in my county. Last year was our largest event with us drawing over 500 people who could care less about the 40 or so protesters outside the hotel protesting the NRA. Anyway, we do pretty good supporting and promoting gun and hunting rights so dang close to the city. The pic is of my future daughter in law, Sammy at last years NHFD event here in Rockland county. This girl was a vegan when my son met her. Now she kills her own food Hopefully one of these events is close to you.

Sounds like fun. Keep an eye out for arrow heads and meteorites if you walk the Texas desert. I have been out there a few years ago. Iraan, Texas. Crockett county. You are in the middle of nowhere. Lucky if you get any cell service at all. Bring most of what you need. Rides to the stores are far. Hunt safe and safe travels.

I love the Hog one! Pretty cool. Almost a shame to take apart and burn. Norway also has a special way to stack wood to speed dry wet wood for burning. These Norwegians know their wood.

Yes boots would have been cool or even something from the gator you shot. Rifle sling. Even the wife was interested in having something made. Those were my first thoughts too. But you have to start with a tanned hide first. POW! $1000 American right out the gate...Our host expressed interest in it so I gave it to him.

Lets go team 5! Hoping to start my bow season off here in NY, skip on down to Texas in early Nov for the gun opener, then back up to NY for the gun opener. That is the plan as of right now.

Thank you. The skull was shattered from the coup de grace and I left the hide with our host. I kept all the meat. It was 1k to tan a gator hide. I'll pass. Just bought a mini deep fryer online to cook my alligator in. Can't wait to start cooking it.

Thanks Joe. It was a blast. Something I have never done before. Going with experienced people who know the area made all the difference. Yes, I did get to bring some home. We did our own processing and I bought a soft sided cooler from Wally world to take with me. My 1 hour layover turned into 5 at the Philly airport because of the weather. Made it to a freezer just as it was getting squeezable. Have about 12lbs. Been looking up recipes all day. Yeah we ate the first gator we caught. It was soaked in buttermilk over night, covered with fish fry crumbs and deep fried in canola. It looks like chicken, but texture is more like veal. It was incredible! If have a chance to order it someplace...do it. Time for me to buy a deep fryer.

Been putting in for about 5 years as a group and we were selected. What a blast. Out of the Savannah area, Richmond Hill. Along Fort McAllister and close to Ft Stewart. Lies one less 7'4' gator in the swamps. These gators are tough critters getting them is nowhere near like as easy as TV makes you think. For one, no hanging bait on hooks and catching them like fish, like on TV. Not in Georgia anyway. In Louisiana that is OK. IN Georgia You have to snag them and get them as close as possible before you shoot them. No easy task and MANY failed attempts. Luckily the guy who took us out knew many spots for gators and I was able to connect. They wiggle something awful when hooked. I have caught some big fish and know what a fight is like. These Gators fight ferociously. Saw tons of wildlife and even had the possibility to shoot a hog from the boat on land. That did not happen, but I was told to keep eyes on the shore also. The pigs there like crabs and other shellfish at low tides and are not too swift in the mud when you float with the tide. No hogs but a good gator. Had a great time, would love to do it again. $100 for a non resident hunting license and $250 for gator tag. No guide fees was among friends. Headed to Joes house in Orange county. He will drop me off at airport in am before work. It is close to him. Stewart AFB. It is a small airport that is growing commercially... Very close to West Point. So glad I do not have to trek down to city or even Newark NJ to catch a flight. Off to the swamps of Savannah and the Ogeechee river. I feel like a kid :). Worried a bit about my knee. Still wearing a heavy duty brace. But I will not be alone I am assured. I will have help. I better. Bringing nothing but clothes. ? At minimum, get to see friends and travel a bit. A gator would be a plus! Full report when I get home.

Nice pics Ross. Thanks for sharing. Would you call that knife a dirk?
-
Whatever works for deer will usually work for bear also. Shot placement is everything. This year I will be using 165gr woodsman glue on heads with Port orford cedar shafts.
-
I agree very cool footage. Transporting them without drugging them is probably best thing for critter. With them in your hunting area your gut piles will be magnets. Good Luck and be safe.
-
My friend Chad who organized the hunt is a Federal LE agent that works the Atlanta area. We are in good shape there. But I have seen Deliverance...and I KNOW what your talking about Did a little google search on the Ogeechee and they have been pulling some monsters out of that river. A 13' gator was taken a few weeks ago. Don't want nothing that big. Getting excited. Nothing like hunting mammals on land. Full report when I get back.

Wow...How beautiful. One of these days.... Thanks for sharing.

Yup, Congrats are in order. He was at the NYS Fair for the Amateur Wine Awards. The award is definitely purple feet related. Go Joe Go!

Ross...Just got some more info on gator hunt. We will be hunting the Ogeechee river. I know nothing about Georgia and gators. Will be relying heavily on Chad and guy whos boat it is. Gonna do some research on this river today and see where it is. Leaving Sept 5th.
