Ok guys, most of you know me well enough to realize I love bow hunting. Yesterday morning I climbed in a stand I only hunt when the rut is cranking up. This was to start my roller coaster day.
At 5:30 am the coyotes were singing to me, about 6:15 daylight broke to a beautiful day once again reminding me there is a creator and he does good work. At 7 am I did a little doe bleating and was sure I heard a deer walking but I could not tell where, about 5 minutes went past and I look to my left and there is a shooter making a scrape at 35 yards.
Hear we go boy you need to make this happen, I started auto pilot made a small bleat with the grunt tube and prepaired for the shot. The buck came across the thicket to give me a broadside shot at 25 yards. I was shooting from the sitting position because I could not stand without spooking him. When I released I saw that impact was 5 inches back from where I wanted it. NOOOOOO Don't gut shoot him. I saw a good large spot of blood on his side as he ran up the mountain, I watched to see if the did the ol gut shot slow walk, which he never did, I was really hoping I got liver.
Now for the hard part, I backed out quiet, went home and took the girls to school and went to the office. About 10 I went in and asked the owner if he had plans or if he wanted to help me look for a stud I just shot. We discussed the shot and he made me feel better about the way the deer ran out of there.
We gave him till 1 and circled around in the direction he was headed, I know when the travel that area they use a logging road that runs on the upper bench so we headed there to start working back to where I last saw him. This allowed us to glass down onto the bench and maybe come from a direction he wouldn't expect just in case his head was still up. Aprox 50 yard into the stalk my boss spotted him piled up on the road, he died quick and running 30 yards after I lost sight of him. Here he is , the largest Pa whitetail I have ever had the oppertunity to take.
18 3/4 inside, 21 outside, dressed at 141 lbs, quick guess on the score puts him at 122 to 125 and by far my best archery buck.
