  1. unless you live in NY. then getting some selective herbicides are tough to impossible.
  2. jesus Don that's light! can't even barely touch the flint lock trigger i'd think. my savage 12 varminter is probably 2lbs. my browning abolt is adjusted as low as it'll go so probably 3lbs or a little less. my other stuff is a bit heavier. all triggers are stock and not messed with though.
  3. didn't catch your posts that it was thought to be 4.5 yrs old. 150lbs dressed is more consistent with a 2.5 or 3.5 yr old up this way in NY. deer still age the pretty much the same though development wise. looks older than 3.5 yrs old in the trail cam photo. developed front to back all the same. neck filled out and hitting low on the brisket, among other things. 3.5 yr olds are less developed in their rear half than the front half. a little harder to see in better conditioned healthy deer leading into the rut.
  4. Stanislawski releases have triggers with actual sears. they break like greased glass as good as any rifle trigger out there. that said you can most definitely still "punch" them and shoot them horribly. some say to set them up like a hinge style back tension release with the barrel/trigger riding high up on your thumb, away from the pad. rotate it as you normally would a hinge to fire it. everybody seems to think you have to shoot this way and you don't. i tried that with mixed results. you can be consistent but have less control. outdoors in wind and other situations i might have the release break the shot when i didn't want it to. also i could never get used so much rotational movement and it effecting my anchor during the shot. another thing i found was pulling thru too hard or not the same caused shots to vary slightly left to right. i now rely on that awesome trigger that won't let you feel sear movement/creep. trigger barrel sets right in the middle of the thumb pad. release body stays put at my set anchor. i have the travel set pretty close to factory settings. as in just a little bit in case i have to back off the thumb pressure or regroup with something like nerves or say wind gusts. i hold on target with enough back tension to keep the pin settled in floating within a small window. then just apply thumb pressure and ride it out until the shot breaks. if i need to i can increase back tension only a little at the same time to help it fire. i can hold a longer too because i'm not pulling overly hard into the back wall. just enough to get the pin to settle down. problem is you can't have any target panic though. if you think about having to apply pressure to the trigger barrel you're not going to be okay, because you should be focused on aiming. i do this with my index triggers for hunting but it's a lot hard. you definitely feel the sear movement and have to calm the nerves until it goes off. i've caught some roughness in the "sear" on index trigger releases and had it halfway to fire but the trigger stopped moving with the pressure i was putting on it. makes you practically lose your mind as it could go off with a breath but it just hasn't yet. research blank bale shooting even if you don't have target panic will help make the trigger pull effortless and seem almost involuntary. it helps. set things up to work for you, but don't ignore something about your setup you know you should be fixing or think is making you less consistent. hope that makes sense and you can follow what i typed.
  5. those center two incisors to send into a lab and the jawbone full of teeth to look at would be like gold to me. i hope he kept them both.
  6. hey Al there's a lot of rumors and here say surrounding world record bucks. I known i'm splitting hairs a bit but that some more reliable sources i know of aged it at 4.5 yrs old. I know that a very respected whitetail biologist that i've met that actually was a guest at Milo's home. Milo showed him the jawbone and he was pretty set on it being 4.5 yrs old. Makes sense though. at 4.5 yrs old a buck can get pretty close to peak antler growth. hard to say where the aging is coming from and how reliable it is for this TN buck. if it was only 3.5 yrs old that's crazy big even for a world record. research by TX and MS universities has been done concluding that age buck (3.5) is extremely likely to get to at most just shy of 80% of its maximum potential antler growth. to think this buck could've piled on dozens of more inches isn't even something i can wrap my head around.
  7. TRU Ball/Axcel Armortech sight took a lot of the impact. one of the knob edges was ground down i'd guess from contact with the pavement. i didn't touch anything and shot 3 arrows at a vegas face set out to 20 yards. all 3 were Xs and the bow was still dead on. I was fully expecting to find it in pieces on the side of the highway. still blows my mind that i didn't.
  8. i have four finger releases to use a hunting backup with more to hold on to. 3 fingers are good though less surface area you're contacting that you can influence in a bad way. especially with the hook being farther out to give you lots of leverage. i've got two Stan Shoot-off releases with a thumb trigger. same other than ones all blacked out and ones blue with chrome. i've set them up and used them differently but have settled on a certain method that seems to work well.
  9. Seems like Scentlok has a lot of there business. i've seen more media personalities and promotional staff wearing or switching to the Scentlok. They lost a legal fight too. I think they're just trying to keep or keep anyone wearing their stuff. I've had Scentblocker Roadtrips and Protec fleece for a years now and they work well. I saw the sale and still recently purchased Scentlok Cold Blooded parka and pants in Realtree Xtra. No reason other than i liked it better than any Scentblocker stuff i saw and it was on sale too. If you insist there's another reason then i'll tell you Tim Andrus peer pressured me into doing it! haha
  10. Due to the forums being a little slow here's a follow up. I got it set up for outdoor 3D shoots this past summer. It seemed to have a great back wall with draw posts. Also holds real nice and forever with its valley. It let me shoot well enough to win a local championship.
  11. i don't think so. i've given or sold really cheap bows i've used in the past that i really liked but it was to get those new to shooting into it all with confidence. my previous 3D and hunting backup bow my cousin now has. i replaced it with a 2016 Elite Victory. thing holds still on target forever. a little long to hunt with but mostly used as a 3D bow. My primary hunting bow is a 2011 PSE Evo that is just as fast and smooth as many new bows. long story short i lost it on the highway and the mail man being a great guy returned it to me. it had minor road rash and no other damage. still to this day shoots as good as any day i've had it. fate has us killing deer together for as long as i can help it.
  12. while back i was going on an out of state muzzleloader hunt. i contacted blackhorn and got a great response back. had illustrated directions for my gun and what to look for that could kill accuracy. basically they said it's particular with what primers it likes. also carefully use a certain drill bit size in your fingers to get build up out of the flash channel to keep it to exact spec. problem is i couldn't find it anywhere. anyone i know that uses it gets awesome results though.
  13. that awesome Todd! my daughter's only 2.5 yrs old. getting her a lifetime license soon because it's very cheap when they're young. a while before she can deer hunt though. youth age to hunt deer with a gun is 14 here in NY.
  14. I've seen "gray in the face" deer that were 2.5 yrs old. I don't hold confidence in every DNR person aging deer either. not saying anyone is wrong. just don't think "gray in the face" is something to bet money on. like william said it would be great if there were more pictures. roman nose is a good physical characteristic for aging as it describes thickness of the neck up toward the head and skull height from the jaw line to the top of the head. fully grown skull or skeletal maturity happens at 4.5+ yrs old and typical at 5.5 yrs old is when the neck fills out all the way to its head, as if it was a barrel you could fit its head down into during peak rut. most people use the term loosely though not truely knowing what it means.
  15. i've got a burris speed bead and it works good for both.
  16. i found it on facebook. Elite Series is western and central NY. can't do it. the PSE is more feasible. state championship is in penn yan which is a far hike for me. also tough to burn the whole weekend and stay somewhere for each shoot.
  17. so regular gun season is over here in NY. took another doe and took a photo but forgot you need yourself in the picture. still some older bucks running around just haven't caught them on the property. this weekend i've got a lot going on but will try to get out. i don't think it makes much difference score wise but sorry for screwing up the chance for doe points. i suppose there's a small chance of taking another doe but freezer pretty stocked and we've met the quota for the farm. it'd have to show up behind the house on another property. hope everyone has had a good season and are ready for Christmas or whatever you celebrate.
  18. I'm on vacation right now. Getting back soon. Took another doe before I left. Have pictures. Passed multiple 2.5 yr old 8pts and smaller. Been after some 3.5+ yr olds with no success. Have a couple weekends when I get home.
  19. Awesome deer and story. Good to see you're getting out there. I haven't shot a buck this year. Way to put some pressure on the rest of us! Lol

    Blood Trails

I've had deer hit in the heart and lungs with everything from a ML to broadheads of all types. sometimes there's no blood at all and sometimes it's like someone emptied a 5 gal bucket along the way. more to tracking than blood. got to watch the deer until it's out of sight. remember where it went. with a bow you've got to spot your own shot on the deer. you've got to look for disturbance in the forest floor duff. sometimes you have to grid search the area in the AM to make sure there's a dead deer based on your feeling it was a good shot. I've seen some major holes in deer that didn't have blood trails. one died within 40 yards from a Rage head, no blood, but it had a several inch long gash a few inches wide in its rib cage from the angle and maybe deflection a little. guy said the head failed and I told him he was full of ****. the deer was there and the head killed it. my biggest buck was center punched through the heart with a 250gr hornady sst ml sabot. it was nice dry and barren soil conditions to show even a drop of blood, yet nothing was found. buck layed dead maybe 30 yards away behind a patch of cedars out of sight. I can hold sub-moa groups with it though so I still use them. same for broadheads. Rage Titaniums have just worked so I'm still using them. even after being discontinued because they were crazy expensive.
  21. took a forced couple weeks off from hunting. carving pumpkins and cut my hand right where the bow grip sits. seems healed enough so i'll be back out there this weekend. hopefully I see a 3.5 yr old or better this time.
  22. awesome Al... good to see all the hard work spent in MO is paying off. Congrats on the nice buck!
  23. guy I know missed too from not aiming in the middle. gave him a low haircut instead. he hit the bait bucket that was legal to have there. now everyone calls him Bucket.
