  1. can't see the pictures here but I already saw them on facebook when RangerClay commented. Congrats again Shaun. it's a nice buck!
  2. congrats on the buck. passed on an 8 pointer earlier this year that was pretty decent. I had the itch so I put my finger BEHIND the trigger to further resist the urge to let an arrow fly. I'm with ya. the struggle is real! lol
  3. lee lakosky told me it took him 7 years to get his first bow buck. his standards were high then but still that's a boat load of patience.
  4. don't get the HDX then. go for the QAD Hunter that's closer to $56 bucks it's close to the same rest. all my bows have QAD rests on them now. I'm not a fan boy of anything. they just simply work.
  5. what's the elite series? is it a western NY thing? I only know of IBO qualifiers and the world's that was here a few years ago.
  6. we've got it so people (family and friends) were practically putting together a waiting list for certain stands. so now you put up your own. if someone wants to hunt out of one then they ask you first. I've gotten to the point where I just setup spots for a climber stand. keeps some spots a little more secretive for the immediate time frame. otherwise people would be hunting it before I got a chance to. all the scouting and work for someone else. I am thinking about buying another one or two though. I don't have any 2 man ladder stands for when the wife wants to go or eventually my daughter.
  7. should've been out with it in the northern zone this past weekend. how's it working for you Joe?
  8. ideal picture is a sharp color, broadsided, head up, no vegetation or stuff in the way to hide any parts of the body. that said you can sit work with less. this picture is a lot less. grey in the face means little. have had older bucks to without significant scars. if he's in an area similar to the Midwest with good soil he could be 2.5 years old. otherwise best guess is 3.5+ yrs old. this is a hard antlered buck, but another no-no is using characteristics to judge a buck while still in velvet with lower testosterone levels.
  9. had some QDM co-op tasks to attend to and had family stuff going on Saturday so I only got out Sunday. Everything that came in close had a small set of antlers so I didn't seal the deal on a doe yet. one deer came in right at last light from some blind calling. looked like an adult doe (1.5+ yrs old). kept looking it over real good within 15 yards around the stand. finally saw it was a runt little buck with a 2.5" spike on just one side. maybe busted both sides idk. to low light to tell. he almost ate a Rage titanium. I'd like to fill some of are quota before breeding starts. maybe this coming weekend. beach vacation set me back a little. haha
  10. some good ones already mentioned. i'm young enough none of it is my time though. some Queen is good but more songs that aren't as popular like One Vision. other older stuff i have on my phone right now is alice cooper, AC DC, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart (only Maggie May), Kiss, Steel Dragon, GunsNRoses, Twisted Sisters, Kansas, George Thurgood, SteppenWolf. ......Sparkle Horse, Joe Walsh, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels, merle haggard, willie nelson, waylon Jennings. ....Jerry Lewis, Spencer Davis Group, and Otis Redding.
  11. certain things you buy there and certain things to don't. for example food plot seed, any minerals/bait, and ground blinds you can get materials to make the same thing or similar stuff like seed cheaper at the local ag store. when I do buy from Cabelas it's free or so heavily discounted I can't get it any cheap even anywhere online. I've walked out with a fully setup scoped CVA Optima muzzleloader or climbing stand without paying a dime.
  12. this holds true for me. more often than not I use points and club offers to buy general hunting stuff from Cabelas. I've bought some stuff from BassPro, Gander, and Dick's Sporting Goods/Field&Stream. By far though Cabelas gets most business. Occasionally ebay, Lancaster archery, and 3Rivers for less run of the mill archery gear but that's about it. I've had the card a while now too. Almost to the point it's a Cabelas black card. Nothing amazing but between the Club Offers, Cabelas sales, and points I make it work quite well. Blows my mind there's no bigger chain in the capital region of NY. If it turns into a bass pro card so be it. I won't be eating any points though if some deadline for change over happens.
  13. just a local summer league. no state championship but had some really good shooters there. basically bowhunting setups only but targets out to some where just under 80 yards for the championship shoot-off. I did well enough to claim the top spot. now just have to find room for the trophy. great practice for bow season and crazy amounts of fun.
  14. only rifle I think I want is a custom job from Remington in Ilion, NY. I feel with the current NY governor and politicians it's harder and harder as a company for them to stay despite the generations of roots that lives and breathes in that old factory. quality seems to have gone down hill but I think there's some spirit left. For how long I don't know. on another note... I took my first buck with a Winchester 94. it was a 30-30 with a side mounted 3-9x30 scope. i'm open to all kinds of deer rifles with varying types of actions. the model 94 though will always have reserved parking in the sole of my hunting bones.
  15. just back from a beach vacation. round out the week days with work. will check the trail cams after work tomorrow and hunt the weekend. should be putting at least a doe down I'd think.
  16. Saw lots of doe. No slam dunk shots though or ones that wouldn't clear field at prime time. Passed a nice 2.5 year old 8 pointer that's fair game on the QDM co-op. He's on track to be big but will make a youth hunter happy this year. Had a ruffed grouse walking around like a boss under the treestand. Poor guy lookin lovin but couldn't find it.
  17. little rainy here this past opening weekend. had some encounters with many doe but nothing that was a slam dunk shot or wouldn't clear a field at prime time. stalked a buck to within range in a hay field using the hilly terrain and the wooded edge. nice 8 pointer with decent tines and spread to its ears. looked it over real good though and it was 2.5 yrs old all day long. meets the minimum for our QDM co-op but next year if it makes it it'll be a very respectable buck. have some youth hunting so it'll provide some opportunity if they so choose. setup up a couple other stand locations for a climber with a mock scrape and another one where a creek bottom feeds into a 10 acre corn field. gotta have options.
  18. I agree with others that it's 3.5 and 125-135" gross. depends on how tight those beams curl in. he should make another big jump in antler next year at 4.5 yrs old, but he might top out. just don't know until they get there. hope you at least get an encounter frank.
  19. not on here much anymore. still doing this trip I see. hope it works out this time. story of how it went once you get back is always good read.
  20. first day out for a few of us tomorrow. Good luck everybody!

    Prep Time!

season kicks off oct 1st here in NY. doing a lot for an 11,000+ acre QDM co-op I help run. I do a whole lot prep for me. I've got some cameras out now though, checked one of my old stand locations that has the #1 hit list buck in the area. have got some others that are ready to go, but based on real time scouting I always throw up a few others to hunt very soon after. definitely forces me to be efficient with my time.
  22. yea you guys are a bunch of fighters health wise that'll probably live forever. it's admirable carting him around. it's good to let them pursue what they want when they're young. you've got years ahead to go on hunting trips or just hunt somewhere.
  23. I forget your reasons for dwindling interest. I know you posted them a while back. Get out there if you can make time for it whenever possible. if bringing a kid that's even better. no big deer in ohio anyway. just going out to have fun.
