  1. This will be my daughters first year deer hunting. If she gets a buck with a decent rack (6 pointer or better) I'll have it mounted for her ($350.00) is what my local guy charges. He's doing a crappie she caught this past spring that will run about $120.00. I've got a turkey being done that will run me about $500.00 If I get a nice buck this year (130 inches or better) I'll have it mounted. Spring 2010 I'll be trying my luck in Idaho again for my first bear. If I get one I'll have a rug made for about $700.00. So I guess the economy hasn't kept me away from the taxi. I have cut out other things though.
  2. Just thought I'd let you know that I finished sighting in my 20 guage with Winchester Super X rifled slugs. I'm very happy with them. I was placing the shots within a softball at 25, 50, and 70 yards. At 9 dollars for a box of 15 I'm sold! No longer will I be paying 15.00+ for a box of 5 remington copper solid sabot 12 guage shells.
  3. If you lived closer to me I'd say lets meet for coffee and talk hunting! Something I never get tired of. Where to start ????? Sounds like you're going about it the right way. Make sure you take every safety precaution and don't take any shortcuts. I'd suggest that you wait to use a tree stand until you gain a little experience. A ground blind would be a better option. Always be sure of what your shooting and what is past your target in case the bullit passes through. A video demonstrating how to field dress a deer...
  4. The best part about prom is getting ready! (So a lot of the girls tell me anyway). I love clearing shooting lanes, finding the right trees, acquiring new locations, reviewing maps, and more recently getting my friends and kids involved!
  5. Great news! :toot::clap::yes:
  6. He's one I'd love for my 8 year old to take. I'd let him pass unless it was January and I had no venison in the freezer.

    Sad day today

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Even though I'm not really sure if pets make it to heaven I'll be saying they do tomorrow.

    delays-kinda stinks

Glad your family is home safe William. I've been to Ohare several times and it's NOT the place to get bad directions at. Glad Catrina was able to make her connection.

    Sad day today

Yesterday evening after returning from dinner I had a message that our beagle "Dorothy Parker" got loose and was wondering around the neighborhood. Silly thing was a slave to her nose and followed it anywhere. I have a fence and an electric fence under the ground because she would always dig under it. Well I guess the battery in her collar went dead and we didn't know it. The message on our phone (from someone down the street) stated they were going to place her back into our back yard fence. Well when we got home we looked and no Dorothy. I'm sure she just went out again once they left. We looked all over but couldn't find her. This morning on my way to church I spotted her on the side of the road about a mile down the highway. Thank God I was the only one who did. I took the kids to Sunday school and then went back home to tell my wife. She wasn't feeling good and decided to stay home this morning. She was very upset. Anyway, I spent the better part of the day at my dad's place in the country digging a grave. First time I have done that. The youngest kids don't know yet. We're going to tell them Tuesday and have some kind of goodbye ceremony. Too bad I haven't had the money to buy a set of bag pipes yet. Dorothy was a sweet dog, but advanced in years. Her health had started to decline this past year. I don't think she suffered much because based on her injuries I'm pretty sure it was instantaneous.
  10. I had no idea but Luke, if you read this... The "force" isn't the same without you.
  11. I went to shop that had them and tried several on. The tag on my HSS tree stalker says Large/XLarge. It fits a hunter from 150-275 lbs. 36"-52". I'm 6 foot and 200 pounds and it fits me fine with a light jacket as well as heavy coat. I'd suggest a large if trying one on is not possible.
  12. Wow did the Mafia Man get banned for asking this? Guess I'm in for it now! :clown: http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88445
  13. I'll go with 129 inches gross - 125 net.
  14. Non-residents should have or be getting theirs any day. I've had mine for a couple weeks now.
  15. I've been noticing them too Ken. One showed up in my latest blog. The word depression is green and underlined. I didn't do it. When I click the word I go to the old thread where I wrote the story originally. My Colorado vacation Blog has the word "accounting" in green and underlined twice. Click it and one goes to a web site about gettign a career in accounting.
  16. Walking through standing corn in the dark can be a little unnerving for me. Worse if it's a farm I'm not real familiar with. My biggest fear is walking through the woods on public ground during the shotgun season. I'll whistle, humm, talk to myself, and cough hoping there isn't a brush shooting idiot out there with a loaded gun pointed at me.
  17. He should have the other side done as well. I'd suggest ENRON :clown:

    Shooter?

Depends on where and when. Walks until mid-late November. I'd take him during the shotgun season (public land).
  19. You are indeed mistaken. No electronic devices for P&Y. Their club, their rules. To be entered into the Pope & Young Club Records, the animal must meet the minimum scoring requirements, and must be taken in complete compliance with the controlling game laws and the Rules of Fair Chase. The term "Fair Chase" shall not include the taking of animals under the following conditions: 7. By the use of electronic devices for attracting, locating, or pursuing game, or guiding the hunter to such game, or by the use of a bow or arrow to which any electronic device is attached. Looks like that buck is 160 gross with minor deductions. If he gains anything at all I'll bet he'd go B&C.
  20. His net will be close to his gross. I'd say Gross-138, Net-134.
  21. Had one under my stand last season, I just shot it with the camera.
  22. Nice looking deer! Sorry to hear about the predation problem.
  23. Compliance is my middle name (I mean... Compliance is my middle name.)
