The only positive thing (if you can call it that) is that many times it is a family member/custody dispute in which the child is not physically harmed. Hope that is the case this time as well.

Yeah a lot of days I can't even turn on the news. My wife is an attorney and works for the circuit court, so she sees every felony in her district. Some of the crimes make your heart wrench. I'm all in favor of public stoning for a man that hurts a child.
