Yeah I'm with you Dawg, nothing like a little loin cut up on the grill off a 40 pounder!
-
Happy birthday Steve!!! I hope you're doing a lot better too!
-
Don't guess I've ever been to one. Sure don't have one when I lived at Starkville. May have to check one out next time I get out and about.
-
And don't get the $50 wally world special lock-on. Very flimsy. I welded more supports to mine to salvage it. Sometimes you get a great deal, sometimes you get what you pay for. It's pretty hard to beat this for bowhunting" Guide Gear 20' Climbing Stick - 546743, Ladder Tree Stands at Sportsman's Guide Guide Gear Deluxe Fixed Tree Stand - 674535, Hang On Tree Stands at Sportsman's Guide Or go the ladder route: Guide Gear 21' Double - Rail Ladder Tree Stand - 650788, Ladder Tree Stands at Sportsman's Guide Just make sure if you get a ladder like that you ditch the rail or it will make you pay lol (I can tell you from experience).

Nothing wrong with a tall ladder stand for reasons mentioned above. I also prefer a lock-on for bowhunting but I still hunt and kill deer with a bow using ladder stands. No matter what you do, I highly recommend taking a buddy with you to hang your stands, and get yourself a harness to use while doing it and also when hunting. I've only recently started using a harness and feel much more comfortable when I have one on. Only takes a second to go from being a family provider to being paralyzed for life.

Mostly hickory because all I have to do is walk outside and whack a tree down, they are everywhere down here. Never tried cherry, not nearly as common but certainly plenty of it here and there. May have to give it I try. I use hickory green or dry.

lmao Chris! Never seen a squatch or anything else either but I'm keeping my eye out for one, Bobo says they're out there and that's good enough for me. :ninja:

What was your first deer you shot with a bow?
redkneck replied to Ravin R10 man's topic in Bowhunting
Must have been around 1987 I guess. I was about fifteen and hunting a ladder stand about seven feet tall lol. Little doe walked about two feet from the stand, I swear I could have slapped her. I tried to draw but she was less than five get from me so of course she ran at first movement. She stopped at thirty steps and I spine shot her. I was so happy until I got to her and saw her fading spots. I had to cut her throat while she bleated! I was so disgusted, I carried her out one handed over my shoulder, she may have weighed forty pounds. But when I got to the camp my uncle told me to shake it off and that I should be proud of killing one with stick and string. He was right. I only went up from there. -
Can hunt my backyard, and do just a little but mostly it's a 28 mile drive to our camp house.
-
Sweet tg! I'm jealous!
-
Does this guy make you sick or what? And why is it Obama and Zimmerman are basically the same color yet one is considered black and the other white? Unreal.
-
Yeah if you want pet deer just stay there constantly, they'll be like the deer in our camp yard patch. Constant noise and scent and they're ok. Like rhino said your scent won't last long once you're gone.
-
Live traps, foot holds, whatever. You'll be saving feed as well as helping out the turkey population. It's work but you can make an impact.
-
I've never had a problem with them as far as being threatened. I think the worst thing you ever need to worry about is a protective mother if you're threatening her little ones.
-
The only thing I know about wind here is most days it's going to change ten times before you get down esp in the afternoons. You can set your stand with the best wisdom possible but good scent control is the best strategy.

I think with the scoring system we use here which is 5 points for a deer and one point per antler point it puts everyone on an even playing field (or as even as you can get). Puts a 120lb FL ten point on an even level with a 240lb OH stud 10. Not everyone enjoys the same quality or quantity of deer as others. It's all about getting out and enjoying yourself and having a little success in the contest from time to time for bragging rights.
-
Well we get four full months starting 10-1 here, some parts of the state get a little more than that. I can barely stand the heat and humidity in early Oct, surely couldn't take it in Aug/Sept.
-
Yeah, he could have just said "I got engaged" like most folks do in here. I'm just happy it's a woman, he is in WA after all! Haha, good luck to both of you Benji.

If you follow the rules below for photo entries your deer will be considered for the contest. Just take a pic and keep it of you and your deer along with the tag just as the rules state. Leave your team name blank. You won't be penalized just because you guys start deer hunting the day after turkey season ends lol. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENTERING A DEER To submit an entry a participant must include in the 2012-2013 RT Forum Deer Contest - ENTRY thread... your screen name, the number of tines that are 1 inch or longer (main beam counts), your team name. A photo of himself/herself with the deer, Photo must show the entire front half of the deer or more - this is to avoid any possible accusations concerning people entering mounts. NOTE 1: This picture HAS to show both the deer AND THE HUNTER, pics of only the deer will not be counted. Photo must show the entire front half of the deer or more. NOTE 2: Picture of just the caped out head, skull plate, or skull mount will not be counted Photo(s) were all scorable tines can be seen in. If 1 inch tine is questionable supply a photo with a measurement against the tine for verification. A photo of legal tag: This is a MUST, no deer will be entered without a clear picture of the tag. Make sure the picture can be read in the picture. NOTE 1: The tag picture has been the #1 reason for entries not being counted in the contest - DON'T FORGET YOUR TAG PICTURE. FOR PARTICIPANTS IN STATES THAT DO NOT HAVE A TAGGING SYSTEM write the following information down on a piece of paper, your forum name, your team name, date deer was taken, state deer was taken in, print and sign your name - scan or take a picture of that info and supply it instead of the tag picture. ** If you have issues with scanning or posting your photos I would be happy to help you out or post them for you, just send me a PM. - See more at: http://www.realtree.com/forums/announcements-online-contests/109351-2012-2013-realtree-forum-deer-contest-rules.html#sthash.08CCZkDI.dpuf

Just keep posting lol. I'll look and see what's the best time to get it going. I hate to start to early and folks about burnt out with it before season even gets started for most of us but them Florida boys and their 11.5 month deer season always wanna sign up early lol. Won't be much longer.
-
Happy belated birthday Tim! Hope it was a good one!
-
Yeah that's a little better than my front yard! Hope he's doing much better now Leo.
-
You make a good point, but also by that logic I would still be shooting an old bear whitetail hunter because it did work. Nothing wrong with a little change from time to time.
-
I feel your pain bro. My wife got a BMW about three years ago and all I can say is if you own one and don't have wads of cash laying around you better have time to spend on forums and be willing to read a lot lol. But I know you already know that, and just like you ran into, you hit a wall these days esp with software issues where you just can't go any further and have to bite the bullet. We're still on the original battery with this car and when I replace it I'll have to take it in to get the thing registered with the new battery so the charging program will adjust for a new battery. It never ends!

You talking about the mcalester hunt? If so Jeremie did that a year or two ago, I'm sure he'd give you some advice.
