Finally got around to giving the old girl a complete makeover. Started life as a standard 5.5" no frills shooter. Gave the frame and slide a coat of Brownells Coyote tan Alumahyde II. Added all new springs. The grips, rear sight / rail and the barrel are from Tactical Solutions. There may well be a can in the future for this one. hangunnr

My brother who's about an hour west of Detroit sent me these pix today. He's had them as regular visitors to his bird feeder. I like the last pic of the little one checking out what's in the feeder. hangunnr

I've never even once heard anyone lament the purchase of Dillon gear. I've heard a double handful squealing that they should've bought Dillon in the first palce after burning cash on lesser equipment. I'll do load development on the single stage Forster, then when I find what I want it's the Dillon for production. As far as precision..... I just sold my Dillon 1050 to the Captain of the US Palma rifle team so he could speed up his production. I'd say that's a pretty good venue to prove the capabilities of a progressive press. hangunnr

Thanks for the comments. I'm happy with how it turned out. A room warming party eh... Sounds good to me... I'm going to christen this bench with a box of 470 Capstick. Then I've got a pile of 308 projectiles here to try new loads in my newly restocked 308 Win. ....but this is a story for another day..... hangunnr -

Well Doc, you were right, it did need additional shelving. Came up with this... You can now see how the presses will be mounted. I have another of the strong mounts coming for the 550. As you can see I also added a trac light on the ceiling. I'll add another pic when fully completed. hangunnr -

It's hard to tell in the pix but there is a 1/4" lip on the front and end and a 1" in back. That should keep everything on top. I'll have a Dillon 550 and a Forster Co-Ax mounted inside but I'll do my sizing/trimming of the bottleneck stuff out in the garage. Easier to contain the mess that way. I'll have to make up a weighted stand for the powder measure as the Co-Ax won't work with it. I had previously used a Lyman O frame press with the powder measure but that press is going to be relagated to sizing/trimming only now. I'm still debating on putting a couple shelves across the back. Probably will, just haven't gotten there yet. hangunnr -

The bamboo flooring is some nice stuff. I've kicked around the idea of doing a couple more rooms. hangunnr -

The way I'll have the presses mounted will negate having to sit under the bench. The swing of the press arm will stop you from sitting too close anyway. There will be a bar stool or draftsman style chair which should put me at the right height. We'll see..... hangunnr -
I've been dying to get back to reloading. I haven't set down and loaded a single round of centerfire metallic ammo since last summer. Since I moved I haven't had a place to set the presses up until this last month. Got the room painted and a new solid bamboo floor put down and now the base cabinets. Hopefully I can get the top done this week and the presses set next week. The top is going to be 3/4" plywood covered with the same bamboo I used on the floor all trimmed with white oak. Having storage space don't suck.... Finished the top and trim today... All in all I'm pleased with how it turned out. hangunnr

Took a buddy out on his first turkey hunt yesterday. He got drawn for a state gamelands hunt but didn't have any experience whatsoever so I volunteered to go along to call. He ended up using my SX2 aswell. We went out to a known spot on state property but couldn't raise a bird. Heard one gobbling in the distance so off we went after him. Closed the distance to about 75yds and got set. The tom answered all my calls but wouldn't budge. I then deceided to try a move on him...big mistake on my part. As soon as I moved I found out there was a second silent bird and it busted me big time. I felt terrible for blowing the hunt. My buddy however was excited as he's never heard one gobble that close to him. We packed up and pulled out... Threw all the gear in the truck and headed out to my farm to set the blind up. Hadn't been in the blind 20 min and a hen came right out in front of us. She passed within 8ft. A little while later we saw a tom cross a field but with the 20-30mph winds, calling to him wasn't gonna work. Put in 5 more uneventful hours with nothing seen. Right at 6pm a tom crested the hill headed straight for us. After he closed to within 40yds a hen came over the hill from where he had emerged. He spun around and headed towards her. I told Howard it's now or never so he let a load of 6's fly. Smashed the bird to the ground. Paced it off at 47 paces. This bird weighed 26lbs with a 10" beard and spurs measuring 1" and 1-1/8". A corker for a first bird. hangunnr

Got set up in the blind at about 5:15 this morning. Could see hens roosted about 150yds in front of us as soon as light permitted. Birds were gobbling all around us but the Toms were very call shy for some reason. We had hens and a couple jakes within 6ft of the blind most of the morning. At 9:15 this tom came strolling by. I stopped him with a putt and leveled him with a load of Win Extended Range 6's spit from my SX2. Range was ~32yds. This was my heaviest bird weighing in at 25# with a 10.25" beard. The spurs were 17 and 18mm. hangunnr

Caught up with a buck I was chasing last year. He put on a few more points than the screwed up 6 point rack he had been sporting. Last year he was a strange looking nontypical which I had guessed to be a 3yr old but as it turns out he was only 2 at the time. 9 points 160lbs dressed 3.5yrs old hangunnr

The new Rugers are out there but getting sucked up pretty quickly. I've had mine now for a couple weeks. A buddy originally picked it up but couldn't get it to shoot with any factory load he tried so he wanted out, he sold it for a substantial loss... I've run a couple hundred rounds through it and have found it likes the lighter weight bullets the best. So far the 200gr XTP is the best going, running a skosh under 2" at 100yds. Accuracy falls off to around 4" with the 240gr projectiles. I've not bothered with any of the 300gr as I don't think the 20 twisted barrel will handle them. Fit, finish and trigger are typical Ruger craptacular, but it should hunt within it's chamberings limitations. hangunnr

Why you wear safety glasses when shooting.

When I get the chance I'm gonna section the case to see what the inside looks like. hangunnr -
Got out last weekend for some informal long range steel plate shooting with a couple rifles. Ran several hundred rounds through my DPMS LR308 with little fanfare until this round was fired. On the shot I got a face full of powder, brass residue and hot gas. The follower in the magazine was pushed down and lodged sideways and the floorplate was set askew. In all the years I've been fudging around the shooting sports I've never seen a case failure like this one. The brass let go in what should of been the thickest part. The general consensus is that there was a flaw in the metalurgy of the brass. What's odd is that this is the second loading I've done of this case. Just goes to show that **it happens so it's better to have and not need safety glasses than to need and not have them. The visible erosion on the rim is pretty interesting. The inside of the floor plate of the magazine is speclkeled with brass particles. hangunnr

Kirk, I sholud have bought this rifle from you when you had it listed in the Classified forum. I kinda kicked myself when I passed on it then. When it came back up in this auction I wasn't gonna let it go again. PM on it's way... hangunnr
