Re: How About Caribou Reports So my dad, Paul, the guide, and myself come over a ridge. We decide to take a little rest and do some glassing. Paul is the first one to see the bull off in the distance, about 2 miles away. As I am trying to tell my dad where to look so he can see the bou, it falls over. Then a split second later we heard the muzzle blast. About 15 seconds later 3 guys in orange emerge from the timbers below the bou. So I got to watch Perry (Rut-Nut) harvest is bou. But you should ask him about only having one bullet left to get his bou with.

Re: WV archery season starts Oct 15.... I was supposed to bowhunt WV this year. But due to work, I will not be making the trip. We hunt about 10 miles north of Belington. I will be down there for Thanksgiving week for rifle season though.

Re: How About Caribou Reports I was one of the guys that headed up this past year. It was a very dissappointing hunt. I had a great time with the other huters, but the bou just were not there. We did a fly out, but the closest I got to my bou was @ 900 yards. I set my max at 600 yards. We had 11 hunters, with 3 bou and 1 boo-boo. I have been watching the Quebec caribou migration from Quebec's website, and spoke to some other guys I know that went a week later than I did. The Georgia River heard actually migrated right out of Quebec, very odd. Here is the link to monitor the migration. Scroll to the bottom of the site and you will see the varies dates: http://www.fapaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/faune/caribou/

What's the largest caliber rifle you've shot?
njbowhntr replied to Shaun_300's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Re: What\'s the largest caliber rifle you\'ve shot? .50 off the side of the USS Simpson while I was in the Navy. Now that is a fun gun to shoot. -
Re: Which pistol to buy???? I have a Kimber, the Tact. Pro II. I can not say enough about how well that gun performs. Out of the box I put 14 shots center mass at 25 yards. I have a friend in Ct. that has the TLE, he loves it. Personally I am not a big Springfield fan, but that is just me. But the Para, nice gun also. With all that said, I would go with a Kimber.

At present I shoot Beman ICS Hunters. I am looking at upgrading in the arrow department though. Trying to decide between Beman MFX Max-4 or the Easton Axis. Looking for feedback from anyone who shoots or has shot either arrow. Thank you in advance.

Re: What do you all think of the .270 I own a Remington 700 ADL in .270. I love the gun. We have many guns in our closet, but when it comes to hunting whitetail the .270 is a hot caliber. You can get some decent ranges out to the gun, my max shot with it was 242yards and the deer did not move an inch. I shoot the Remington 140gr Core-Lokt Ultra. With this shell I can shoot consistant 3/4" groups at 100yards, out of a bench. According to the Remington website you are still carrying 1200 ft/lbs at 400 yards, that is plenty to put down a deer. Plus the gun has little to no recoil.

First, second or third week of September. As for outfitters, Jack Hume or Club Chambeaux.

Re: If money was no object....? All I know is that it would be chambered in the 7mm STW. As for parts, well that is a long story within itself. It would defintaly be a Remington 700 Action, Jewell trigger, Hart Barrel, probably a McMillian stock, and I am not really sure how I would put the bolt together off the top of my head. But the work would probably be done by Hart.

Re: Season Open Our season opened on Sept 1st. Have not been out yet though. And tomorrow I am leaving for Quebec for a caribou hunt. So my first hunt will be Sept. 24.

Re: The venerable .30-30 I have a Marlin 336C. You can find it over the shoulder every year in West Virgina and every other year in Maine. But it splits duty with my 7mm, just depends on what stand I am using that day.

Re: essential rifle calibers My list is short, but growing every year. .22 Mag - Remington 587 .243 Win - Remington 700 (waiting to be rebuilt) .270 Win - Remington 700 ADL 7mm STW - Remington BDL SS DM .30-30 - Marlin 336C There is also an assortment of shotguns and pistols. My favorite gun is the 7mm STW with the .30-30 coming in second. Basically it depends on how far my shot that day is going to be as to which gun I carry.

Re: Onatario bear pics from last week Hey Fly, I got my bear in Ontario a few years back. My shot was 8 yards. I did a single lung and heart shot. He travelled @ 50 yards he was hit.

Re: Onatario bear pics from last week Congrats on a nice bear. What was the weight on him?

I presently shoot the Powerbelt 295gr HP backed with 100gr. of Triple 7. I can consistant shoot 3" groups at 100 yards.

Re: Caribou Reports? Well sounds like we are going to be hunting together for the week. Looking forward to meeting up with you.

Well I went on Sunday to the range to do the initial siting in of the 7mm STW. And WOW, was I impressed with the gun, scope, and Remington ammo. I shoot the Remington Core-Lokt 140 gr. It was an indoor range so I was only shooting out to 100yards. But, tomorrow I am heading up to northern Jersey to shoot 200 and 300 yards. Next year I will be reloading for this gun, but for my caribou hunt in 2 weeks I will be shooting factory ammo. I will post some pics this weekend of how well, or poor, the rifle handles the longer ranges.

Re: Caribou Reports? I went last year. Had a great time. Too bad for us the migration was just not there. Out of 12 guys in camp, we got 1. Now the guys that came in on replaced us on Friday, shoot 19 on Saturday. It is just how it works out. But, I will be back up there this year. My hunt is from the Sept. 11-18th. I am actually going on a cancellation hunt with the same outfitter. Due to me not even seeing a bou last year, they gave me price I could not pass up. Updates to follow when I return.
