  1. Jesse.. Thanks for the links. I am poking around Macks right now. Really like this site. Question for yall... can I shoot Hevi Shot through a stock full choke on my 1187 or do I have to buy a Hevi Shot choke?
  2. Well last year I went goose hunting for the first time in my life with a buddy of mine from high school who has always tried to get me to go out with him. I shot my first goose on that hunt and that started what has quickly become another addiction. We all went out on our Sept 1st early goose opener and we hammered 6 geese. Not a whole lot for most but for the swamp where we hunt, adjacent to the Hudson River, it was our best day out. October 8th was early duck season and we were out that day also. We killed one drake mallard all morning but after watching him call to the single and get it to decoy, I fell in love with this whole waterfowl hunting thing. My question to you folks is, what do I need to get to get started with waterfowl? It's mostly going to be Canadian geese and whatever ducks migrate through the swamp. I've been looking at calls and stuff but I just don't have a clue where to start. I already have the semi automatic 12ga covered along with plug and steel shot. That's as far as I've gotten though because I've primarily relied on his equipment but for next year, I want to be prepared.
  3. Well I'm back from VA. I shot a doe Wednesday night. The deer were all sorts of jammed up with the weather. We really didn't see any bucks worth shooting although the trail cams showed they were there at night. I may be headed back down there before the seasons end. Our gun opener starts tomorrow and I'm headed upstate in a few hours.
  4. Hey all.. sorry I haven't been around much lately. Work, school and hunting have me tied up pretty good. But this week I'm on vacation and leaving for Virginia tomorrow morning through Friday afternoon. As many of you know, Saturday is NY's opener for gun. I'll be back in NY to hunt til Monday with the bang stick. I have a feeling we're gonna be laying down a lot of venison over the next week including a bear or two. Bucks are running does but the weather just got cool for the all day movement but it seems we're right at that lockdown period. Thank God I won't be here for it. I will keep y'all posted while I'm down there.
  5. Well guess what... That big 7 made an appearance yesterday. Had him broadside at 18-45 yards for about an hour. Problem is, he broke both of his main beams and his right G2. So disappointing. I let him walk.
  6. I'm sitting in the tree right now. Looking to kill a buck now but the sign is very scarce this year. We had an EHD breakout this summer that claimed well over 200 deer in one town alone and with the lack of acorns this year, the deer are very hard to get on. Baiting is out of the equation so its a shear luck kind of year. There's a big 7 point running this property I'm on. Haven't seen him since early September. With any luck he'll make an appearance. I set my camera on the only scrape I've found this year. We'll see what kind of pics I get in a few days.
  7. Thanks guys. I was out again this morning and only saw a forkhorn and a button buck. Passed up the forkhorn at 33 yards and the button at 17 yards. I'll be out again tomorrow and Thurs afternoon, all day Friday and Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. I'm more so looking for a buck now but I think I'll be much more selective as the pre rut hasn't even cranked up yet around here. I do have a doe tag for our land upstate but I'm not sure if I want to save that for rifle season yet. Good luck to all of ya gettin out this weekend. Weather has gotten very hot here for some reason. Its in the low 70's right now and there's some rain in the forecast for tomorrow. We'll see if the rain cools things down a bit.
  8. Hey all!!! Chalk up a doe for me! Burned her yesterday morning at 27 yards. Hard quartering shot entered right in front of her right hind quarter and exited out right behind her left shoulder blade. Perfect placement and 5 points for us! I am impressed with the way the FMJ drove right through her with the G5 Striker leading the way. I'll take pics of the tag and everything tomorrow and get it entered.
  9. 10 days to go from tomorrow. I'm gettin itchy. Seeing plenty of good bucks and tons of does. Can't wait to get up in a tree. Oh and I have the first 3 days of bow season off.
  10. Ruth, if y'all are lookin to meet up at some point this season, I'm game to travel if theres a motel or something nearby. And if ya wanna hunt suburban Rockland County, just 40 min outside of NYC, I can put ya on some deer.
  11. Hey all! Good to see some familiar faces on this team. Ready to go October 15th here in NY's Southern Zone but I may be on a nuisance permit hunt as early as next week. Team name really doesn't matter to me. Good luck all!
  12. As soon as I get better pics I'll put em up. These are the first I've gotten of him.
  13. Here's a few pics of a buck I have no history with. I just gained permission to hunt this piece of land last year. I took 3 does and had a few shot opportunities at smaller bucks but elected to let them go as I am the only person hunting this piece, I knew they'd make it so long as they didn't get hit by a car. I pulled my card out of my trail cam this afternoon and on my digital camera it looked to be a good buck. When I got home and blew the pics up on the computer, I started to have a dilemma. I'm not quite sure how old this buck is. I can put him at 3 years old for sure but not entirely sold on 4 years old. 4 to me means he's ripe for picking and 3 means he gets at least another year. What say you folks? Is he just a 3 year old with good genetics that deserves another year or two or is he ready to receive a shaft through the lungs? I love, love, love his curled tines and his left G3. And heres another pic of a nice 2 year old with short tines. Hope he adds length with age:
  14. Messed up my back last week. Really haven't shot in about 2 weeks now. Air temp is 106 here with a heat index at nearly 120 degrees. I'll pass. Air conditioning sounds better to me. Bow doesnt start here til October 15th anyway.
  15. I have had a HSS pro series for about 4 seasons now and its very comfortable. No complaints besides the mesh gets caught easily on brush. I've been thinkin about tryin out that spyder system that the Drurys have been promoting lately.
  16. CRITICAL RED ALERT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has released their 5-year Management Plan for Whitetail Deer in NYS 2011-2015". This plan is a recipe for the dismantling of the archery-only hunting seasons as we know them today and it will have a dramatic effect on the quality of hunting during the firearm season as well. ALL sportspersons of this state need to spread the wordvia e-mail, twitter, face book, blogs, contacts with sporting groups, sports shops, legislators and any media at their disposal. YOU NEED TO ACT ASAP - MAKE IT GO VIRAL Proposed Tag/Permit Structure - FOR THE <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />ENTIRE STATE * eliminate all antlerless & either sex tags, therefore no tags will be issued with bow or muzzleloading licenses, * antlerless deer can ONLY be taken with deer management permits (DMPs) in selected areas, * the ONLY deer carcass tag that you will receive will be ONE buck tag with your big game hunting license. Once a buck is harvested its your only one and youre done. In areas with no DMPs, or a DMP is not secured via the lottery, hunters can only harvest one antlered (buck) deer. Therefore if a buck is taken during the early bow season, the regular season and muzzleloading licenses that were purchased are useless, * expand the antler restriction (3 antler points on one side) program in the Catskill region. Background Information * In 2002, in compensation for a license fee increase, bowhunters received two additional carcass tags, * In 2005, the DEC implemented regulations that took away up to 10 days and the last weekend of prime bowhunting time in November. This change allowed junior hunters to hunt on the 1st weekend of the regular season, * In 2009, another license fee was enacted, including the addition of a $10 application fee for DMPs, * Bowhuters have to buy two licenses in order to bow hunt (big game and archery), * Bowhunters are paying more license/permit fees in combination with ever decreasing hunting opportunities. Southern Zone Season Structure: * open the archery-only season on October 1st, * create a 3 day youth firearm season on the Columbus Day holiday weekend followed immediately by, * a 4 day muzzleloading/bow season for antlerless deer only (including bowhunters), * bow-only season continues through the 3rd Friday in November, * open the regular season on the 3rd Saturday in November for 23 days (current season structure), * a 9 day combined bow/muzzleloading season after the regular season (current season structure). If this DEC plan is implemented, bowhunters in 2012 will only have a 5 days of uninterrupted archery-only hunting season. After the deer drives start and the guns start going off, the deer will go running, including the mature bucks that will head to their safe hiding spots until the woods calm down in late December. The archery-only season you enjoy now will cease to exist. Northern Zone Season Structure: * open the archery-only season on September 27th, * 3 day youth firearms hunt on Columbus Day holiday weekend, * bow-only season thru the next to last Friday in October (gain 4 days with no additional weekend opportunity), * 7 day muzzleloading/bow season (moved back one week), * regular season opens on the last Saturday in October thru the 2nd Sunday in December (moved back one week), * 7 day muzzleloading with bow hunting included in season. Additional proposals: * The DEC can modify the bow and muzzleloading seasons as it sees fit, resulting in unpredictable season structures. * Make additional portions of the bow season, in selected areas, antlerless only (no bucks). * Allow for the use of crossbows in ALL the hunting seasons (legislation required). * Open a youth-only firearms hunt during the 1st weekend of the Suffolk County January firearms season. Regular Firearm Seasons - Other than moving back the northern zone season by one week, there are no changes to the season length or tag structure, including no requirements to take only antlerless deer in any portion of the seasons! 17. Theres so much more to this than just an Oct 1st opener. Like the introduction of a muzzleloading season smack dab in the middle of bow season. A Youth Gun weekend during bow season. They want to change the tagging system too. You'll get a buck tag and your two DMP's, if you don't get denied for the first DMP! Shoot your buck on opening day of bow and thats it. You're done. No buck during gun season either. We need to stand up for our rights as hunters in this state. Problem is, the politicians look at it as our privilege to hunt because it is not in the NYS Constitution that we have a right to hunt. I have to go to work now but will get back on tonight and post the details. If you're a member of New York Bowhunters, you know what I'm talking about.
  18. I shot the Fusion vanes in 2009. Loved em. They seemed to be quieter than the Blazers.
  19. I didn't try the 2 blade model but I shot two deer last year with the 3 blade version. I was less than thrilled with the blood trail. Both deer went down quickly, in less than 50 yards but the blood trail was virtually non existent. A drop here and there, nothing extraordinary.
  20. jcot.. those were my thoughts exactly. It was a VaporTrail string. The serving came undone multiple times and I just became fed up with it. Bow was 3 years old and I decided it was time to try something new. After 13 deer and countless others, it had served its purpose. But not to hijack the Goldtip thread, Goldtip arrows really are the toughest arrow you'll ever shoot. I've hit objects such as cement blocks, wood fences and even rocks and didnt have any break. All things that make my FMJ's shatter upon impact. I just like the idea of a heavy arrow and have heard great things about the FMJ's. Speed doesn't kill. Kinetic energy and shot placement do.
  21. I shot Goldtip XT Hunter 5575's for the last 3 years and they really are the toughest arrow you'll ever shoot. I shot them off my DXT at 27"/72#. Never had any issues with penetration til last year, but I changed the string and thats when I started having penetration issues. Since then, I've changed my bow and entire set up. Trying out the FMJ's this year. Have heard great things about them and I can't wait to put one through a critter.
  22. Hey all. Took a vacation from work this week and was blessed with thunderstorms and fog. Its supposed to clear up by thursday but tomorrow is supposed to be breezy and foggy. Anyone have any tips for hunting gobblers in the fog? I know they head for the fields in the rain but I'm torn between the hardwoods and the fields. Any help is much appreciated.
  23. Me? A Squirrelhunter? naaa lol Haven't gone out like I used to in a few years but this fall I plan on it.
  24. Bow looks great Ruth. Have you looked into a backtension release or a t handle? I dropped an inch in DL when I bought my Hoyt as well and what a difference it made. It really let me get into my back at full draw and hold much steadier. I bought a Carter SImple 1 and love it. It's a $180 release but well worth it. The problem I was having with standard wrist releases was that I couldn't wrap my finger around the trigger completely but now with the Carter all is well. Oh and a t handle or backtension release will straighten out your form. It forces you to maintain a T by shortening your draw a hair and helping you get into your back. Then its just a matter of push pull and the shot goes off.
