  1. Wonder what drove him to that...
  2. Turkey hunting was very slow for me this year. Been out a bunch of times, but had the best time with my 14 year old on the youth hunt. He didn't shoot, but the jake put on a good show. I will have another crack at it Saturday. Hope everyone has safe hunt.

    New Arrows

Nice arrows. Those Turkey heads say feed me:D.
  4. The Hague Convention of 1899...No hollow point bullets or ammo where a soldier is less likely to survive. Imagine... a nice war:rolleyes:. I too have heard about he 5.56 being created to wound and deplete medical and manpower, also a soldier can carry more ammo of the 5.56 than the 7.62 I quote the article "The M855, Designed decades ago to puncture a Soviets soldiers helmet from hundreds of yards away and to have a more controllable round that the smaller stature soldiers could fire accurately as opposed to the M80 round 7.62X51/.308" US Special Ops in Tampa are buying some of the SCAR Heavy Carbines that shoots the .308 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SCAR The SCAR looks like a winner. Lets hope our boys get it soon.
  5. I just finished reading a (AP) article in my local paper regarding the ineffectiveness of the M855/5.56mm cartridge. Many soldiers are screaming for the 7.62/.308 round. Heavy bullets in urban environs are more effective is what is being said. The article states that the M855 rounds are not lethal enough to bring down an enemy decisively, and that puts troops at risk. In the Jan08 issue of Shooting Times mag, they did a Ours VS.Theirs, guns in Iraq article and all those interviewed wanted the .45 acp and the .308! One soldier said the 9mm is soo bad in combat only gets the enemies attention, so you can shoot him with the rifle:eek:. In 2006 the Army surveyed 2600 soldiers who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. One quarter of those soldiers who carried the M4 carbine (14.5"bbl= reduced velocities) or M16 (18"bbl) wanted larger caliber bullets. The M14 is in high demand and only Army snipers have them in the sandbox currently, but I don't think anytime soon the US Military will replace the M16. They are too heavily invested in it. The Army says "shot placement is the key". That might be true...But the .308 can do whatever the .223 can do bigger and better. I think .223 is a marginal deer caliber, but people take deer with them all the time( with different bullets). The .308 is better suited to stopping what you shoot at. What do you think?
  6. I find I am getting 2-3 days of hunting out of the pads. You know when its time to change them by the amount of bugs that bug you:D. The butane cartridges last about 1 to every 3 pads. No noise, but there is a flame that burns inside, so it is NOT a pocket item while its running. Let it cool before you put it away. Does it smell? I smell a odor when it runs. Does it spook deer? Don't know...Most of the bugs are dead when we get to deer hunt in NY so I don't use it. But I never leave for the turkey woods without the Thermo cell.
  7. Finds like that are VERY cool:). As hunters I think we feel a connection, when we find a tool, arrowhead or something that we ourselves would have owned had we been alive back then. You know you are on good hunting grounds if you are finding heads and spear tips.
  8. Hope it all works out...Prayers on the way.
  9. He is a good boy who has had a ton of tough breaks in his life...now he has this:( Lets hope he improves and recovers from his injury. Keep him in your prayers.
  10. Thanks for the comments. My 6 and 4 year old nephews came up to the hunting cabin this weekend with my Brother and they would not leave that beaver hide alone...They kept rubbing it on their face loving the softness of it. I could only imagine how soft Beaver coats (back in the day) must've felt. I am looking forward to this coming trapping season.

    Weekend Plans

My 3 sons and I will be going up to our house in Sullivan county to turkey hunt, ride off road, fish and maybe a little target shooting. I put a red dot sight on my M4. We'll BBQ all weekend long. Hopefully my brother will come up with his little boys. Hope everyone has a safe weekend and lets keep in our minds and prayers the Brave men and women who are defending our very way of life in America.
  12. The hide was actually $80 to tan and the other $20 was for s&h. I would love to tan my own stuff, but I have neither the time or space to do such. Soo...out the yin yang my money goes on hides like this:rolleyes:. This was also tanned out of season. It was in the freezer for a while and the wife was yelling to get it out:D. This is for decoration on the hunting cabin wall.
  13. Mine works well, but it takes a few minutes to get there. When the pads get white, change them to keep it effective. It has been very valuable this turkey season.
  14. Looks like you guys had a blast for sure. Cool pics. Almost makes me want to get a shoulder Howitzer to join up!
  15. You are just teeming with artistic expression Kathleen:D Great eye and a great pic. Thanks for sharing.
  16. That was a nice photo essay. Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of my boys.
  17. Come on...You live in wildlife paradise. This is a suburban backyard wood lot 40 miles north of NYC. Squirrelhunter91/Joe is my son and this is our backyard Kathleen. Not quite the Alaskan wilderness:D but it is OUR wilderness:p
  18. I spent the last 2 mornings running around our Catskill Mountain with little results. I did however had a Jake or 2 that decided to play with me for a while this morning. They never came in range and I did not see them at all...Heard them gobble close by, but I couldn't seal the deal Next weekend the family Hunting Army will be present All 3 boys will be coming up. We have a long weekend to look forward to. Hope someone on the team is doing better than me:rolleyes:.
  19. That is a nice skull collection Kathleen. Nice job on all of them. Ohhh and them little angels:) Soo cute! We are partial to skulls also here in this house:). Some we do, others we have sent out to have done.
  20. $100, return shipping included, 2 month turn around. Thanks for the comments.
  21. I guess Trapping falls in this thread... I trapped a nice 40-45lb beaver last December and I just got the hide back from www.Brandonwildlifestudio.com in Ft Towson ,OK Shiela out there took real nice care of the hide and did a marvelous job. They are highly recommended. This hide is going up on the wall of the hunting cabin:). Here is the pic of the finished product. Sooo soft!
  22. I too am surprised Cabelas would promote a moron like Treadwell . They need people to contact them and voice opposition to promoting that junk. Some of his footage was good, but at what risk?
  23. No problem Swampy...Wishing you and the Mrs the best. Prayers on the way.
