Re: *%^(*&^! DECALS! I have been asked by a Hunter ED instructor, who was asked by DEC to help gather info on CWD here in Rockland county WMU 3R. My pleasure to help. I am all for giving DEC ANY info they want, to make our hunts and the quality of our animals in this great state better. So what did I do yesterday... my share. I filled a doe tag in 3R. The does head and 3" of spine( what was requested) is headed for the collection spot for DEC to examine. I am glad DEC is looking ALL around the state to stomp out that dreaded disease. I think DEC is becoming a bit more progressive than they have been in the past. The special youth seasons and the saturday openers were a great way to start.

Re: NY Opener I was sucessful this morning. My son and I went out and had deer all around us most of the morning. I shot a nice size mature doe that had an injury of some sort to her right ankle. She was hardly putting any weight on it when she walked. She had the last laugh...she dropped in some really thick briars and it was a BE-ATCH dragging her to the point when I could get her in a cart and haul her off to the house easiliy. The big bucks we have been watching did not come in bow range. We watched them spar( lock horns), rub and scrape. It was a really great morning being with my son Joe and all. All 3 of my sons(14,13 and 10) assisted in the searching( blood trail lessons) dragging and hauling of the doe. I was getting goose bumps doing things like this with my 3 sons. Its what I have been dreaming about for soo long. Now it is slowly becoming a reality Good Luck to everyone else and hunt safe!

Re: Little Odd Buck Injuries to the rear of the buck result in a opposite side antler deformation. That buck would be on my list to remove from the herd. I myself have taken a non typical, that was walking on 3 legs and had a deformed rack. It is one of my most prized set of horns...( I call them horns 'cause they ain't falling off no more ) Take that buck... typical bucks are the norm. The non typ's are unique IMO. Good Luck either way!

Re: *%^(*&^! DECALS! The problem I have experienced with DECALS is understanding the computer when it says the town of kill. It does require alot of prompting and definitely could be made eaiser. Remember, DEC gave the decals contract the 1st year it came out, to a company that folded about 3 months after the NYS contract was given Worldcom..we all know their history, many went to jail for mismangement(ie.Bernie Ebbers) Worldcom was on the rocks when DEC was considering the switch...they did it anyway. So the current system of DECALS was set up by Worldcom and another company picked up the ball when Worldcom went chapter 11.

Re: NEED HELP FROM SAVAGE 99E OWNERS If the gun is drilled and tapped that severely reduces the guns value if it is a older Savage. Take a look around this site It has dates of manufacture and pics on mounting scopes without drilling and tapping. Savage99.com I found out mine was made in 1923. Good Luck!

Re: Antler restriction poll I like and support antler restrictions. They were just implemented in the DMU where I primarily gun hunt in region 3H in NYS,Sullivan county. Youth are exempt from the AR's. I hang out/help out at a local butcher up there in Sullivan county after the days hunt and I see approx 2-250 deer being brought in for butchering throughout the season. 80% are small forkhorns and basket racked 6's with a large quantity of spikes. That deer herd needs help up there. Matter of fact they have restricted the issuing of DMP tags to preference point holders only. The genes are there in the herd, but you cant shoot a big buck if you shoot the littles ones. Let the little ones walk... Besides...a mature doe(meat) is tougher trophy and a harder hunt than a hormone raging buck which is letting his little head do the thinking Where I bowhunt here in suburbia, 38 miles north of NYC. AR's are not needed the bucks get REAL old around here. No access to land to hunt'em on. I am not for forcing people to like what I like, but most of the time the decisions are based on the feedback of hunters and other sportsmen. I think DEC has had many letters on this subject and decided to go ahead with it. Tomorrow evening my son and I are attending a Deer Ecology/QDMA seminar at Gander mountain in Middletown,NY 7pm The quest for more deer knoledge continues!!!

Re: Any little tips or tricks we can offer new hun When your in your deer stand...take a deep breath, smell the air... and savor the moment...look around you and take it all in. Re: climbing stand? I like the Summit Braodhead Backpacker, it folds flat to carry has a open front for the bow hunter and is very sturdy in the 5 yeears I have been using mine. But what ever stand you choose, give a good hard look to the Summit stands, when you do I have a feeling you will be getting ine of those. Hunt safe and good Luck

Re: Favorite hunting based movie? Remember Omega Man with Charlton Heston? He was the last heathy guy in this city and the diseased people were hunting him. It was a 70's flick.

Re: Hunters View I have a Hunters view ladder stand out in the woods now for over 2 years. This fall will be its 3rd. It is sturdy and a good value for the money. Stay up on it with the rust if you get it...trouble spots, the welds and where the bolts were tightend, it will help control the corrosion if you leave it out all yaer like I do.

A friend forwarded this to me. I have never seen it before. I thought I'd share it...IN-CRED-DIBLE....all I have to say. I have no idea what I'd do in a situation like that... How could the camera man just film???? That guy could have gotten seriously hurt. Deer VS.Hunter

Re: Fletch stripping...what do you use? You gave me a great idea! I have a few serrated edge knives that I don't use anymore. I could turn them into fletch strippers I have a Gerber blade that I have in mind. Thanks!

Re: caged hunt\'s or in fenced area . AS much as we, as fair chase hunters may not like this kind of "hunting"; we have to support it as long as its legal. Hunters are coming few and far between. As far as the whole hunting expierience gos, yes a hunter does get robbed of those key ingedients to a hunt we all know. But many people dont have time to scout, hang stands ect. So they opt for the guaranteed hunt. It is not the way I like to hunt, but I will still support it and those people if it is legal. The kill is over is a second, the whole time scouting, choosing trees, sitting in them and soaking up the outdoors is what does it for me. The kill is the pinnacle, but the top is only a little piece of the big picture you get when you "can" hunt.

What do you guys use to strip your fletching? I know there is a fletching removal tool in Cabelas for like 29.99, is there something else one could use to NOT cut into the shaft with? I tried a razor, but it was a bit too sharp and started to shave some carbon. Outside of the tool, is there something else I could use? Any help appreciated.

Re: Cougar Attack How cruel nature can be... That IS one BRAVE little boy. Little ones don't usually have the chance larger people have against animals like that. Thank God that boy is OK.

Re: favorite/most memorable I'd have to say to date...my most favorite hunt is last springs turkey hunt with my son Joe aka(squirrellhunter91). We thought we were about to get skunked and was getting down on the hunt, then we heard these thunderous gobbles. He asked for my 3 1/2" 12ga and handed me his .20ga. Joe called that big ole tom in all by himself and when it was time...he sat it right down...That was my fav. Now my most memorable... was of course Joes 1st deer, a doe with a bow. Remember the story? Me tracking Joes wounded deer, that jumped into the stream behind the house, me having to wrestle it in the water, drown it, then cutting my finger, by putting the hole in her ear for the tag! Because I could not feel my hands from the previous swimming session, digital camera in my pocket while deer wrestlingin the stream, then going to the ER for 5 stitches and the nurse in the ER ready to call the police because I had alot blood on my clothes , deer blood. Yup...that was the most memorable for sure.

Re: Bucks with no velvet!! I see big bucks every night here in our yard and our neighbors yards. None of the bucks yet have lost their velvet. Last year, I saw a few bucks in velvet and in a matter of 3 days their antlers were clean white. I did not see them inbetween those 3 days with the velvet hanging and bloody, that wouldv'e been soo cool. Nothing yet, but patiently awaiting the white racks
