  1. I Like the STW...but they are all good. I have had mixed results with the Weatherby Cartridges 7mm and below (probably due to freebore in the factory Weatherby Rifles). The Ultramag Line of cartridges are great. I personally own a custom 375 Ultra. What a "barn burner". But, if I was to go semi or full custom it would be the "Shooting Times Western" for me. This cartridge is here for a while (its high on the list for wild catters). I don't think the Ultra Mag line of cartridges will stay. Just an observation from a marketing perspective. I don't want to knock Weatherby though. I do posses a Weatherby Accumark chambered in 338-378 that is a tack driver. I have done nothing to this rifle. The trigger broke a clean 3.3 right out of the box. Will group an honest .750" at 100 yards (topped with a Leupold 3.5X14 LPS). I shot a Bull Elk in Montana last year that was standing aroud 350 yards accross a canyon looking right at me. When the bullet impacted the chest the Elk flipped over backwards!! Sorry for getting off the subject, but when someone is going to build a new one it brings back many a memories. What ever you decide, my hats off on your project. You just can't go wrong with your three selections.

  3. Nice set up! I've got a couple myself. Built a lower using a Colt Match Grade Receiver, Timney 2-stage. Then mated it to a American Spirit Arms 26" Bull Barrel. On a good day it will shoot .500 groups at 100. I like your set up better. I should pawn off my upper and get the same set up from Wilson. My other rig is an M-4 configuration with a heavy 16" barrel and a HALO sight (Bushmaster Lower) same trigger and 6 position Buttstock (4 rails weapons platform also holds a sure-fire light). Makes a great Ground Hog gun for my garden which is 65 meters from my back door. Thanks for the pics!!
  4. I still feel the Knight rifle ignition system is the King of the pack. I still feel the Knight Bolt system (they say D.I.S.C) is the finest of the lock up systems. Knight does not lack innovation. What they do lack is the ability to transfer thier products from marketing to advertising to customer. The .52 Knight Long Range Hunter is the finest production muzzleloader from front to back (was not marketed very well). Put a trigger scale on the rifle and you will start to know why. While I will say that the Encore System is a simple and well engineered system, I will pull my long range hunter from the gun safe everytime. My son is not complaining though, he gets to use the Encore.
  5. 9mm is a great choice If you really like the look and feel of a 1911 pistol, then the Kimber is as close as it comes to custom. Personally I like the Sig 226 if your looking for a Steel receiver. My next choice would be a H&K USP. Loaded with 115 +p+ Corbons, its a wonderful defense round.
  6. If your an offf da porch'er than you should opt for the 450 marlin guide gun. BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER!! I have one with a forward mounted scout scope system. I have not taken it to Canada yet, but it is a'waitn for a big bear! It will shoot 1" groups at a 100 with 350 gr ammo.

    Virgina Tech Shootings

It will be interesting to see how this individual could possibly termanate 32 individuals with two semi auto pistols. It had to be well planned. Even in the 12-20 seconds it would take to switch magazines.......seems strange. I wonder if there was more than one shooter? Regardless, its a terrible tragedy that will need plenty of prayers and healing. Yes, the anti-gun boys will be going at it, but lets all try to be bigger. Remember the families and victims first. Its what we are all about.
  8. Re: shot the 300WSM today This is one of those times where everyone is right! I own a Browning short trac in 300WSM...it is a hunting machine! I can navigate the blow downs and fire breaks of western Montana with confidence. I have jumped many a bedded bulls and bucks. It has given me great sucess on my two best Mulies to date. But, I have a ton of 300 win mag brass and a good set of Redding dies. I recently decided to take my Weatherby Fibremark (270 Weatherby) and send it to Krieger to have a custom 27" (with fox river brake) cut rifled barrel installed. Custom bedding job also. Once I get it back, I'm sending it back out to have it dipped in realtree camo (whole gun excluding the bolt). This is my Canadian Whitetail/Caribou gun. Now for the 30-06 guy.....for about 70-90 bucks you can have the chamber of your rifle reamed to 30-06 Ackley Improved (40 degree shoulder most common). Shoot some factory loads to fireform the cases to the chamber, reload and WALAH! You just ballistically recreated the 300 H&H mag. When I load mine with AA3100 powder and use 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, I'm only about 40 fps slower than my 300WSM! It is also very accurate. There like the Ol' Jays potato chips.....ya just can't have only one!!!!
  9. Re: shot the 300WSM today Remember, the data you are looking at is for factory loads. I own both the 300WSM and Win Mag. You can load the Win mag to shoot a little faster (180 Grain .470 ballistic coefficient or better) while maintaining accuracy. It kind of boils down to this.....If you handload, you will lean toward the Win Mag. If your going to buy a new rifle and don't hand load you will probably lean toward the WSM. Either way your a winner!
  10. Re: reloading I own a Dillion Square Deal B a commerical 1050 Press. The square deal would be fine for what you are doing. Dillion Presses are some of the smoothest progressive presses on the market. Save yourself some money and buy cast lead bullets as well. Loading straight walled case pistol cartridges is a simple process....but everyone is right. Read up on the process and find a buddy who knows how. With a few simple pointers you will be cranking out loaded rounds in no time. http://dillonprecision.com/default.cfm
  11. Re: shot the 300WSM today Try the 180 grain Fail safes. I anchored two Mulies that are true trophies. One Mulie was 300+ pounds. Broke both legs and opened the whole bottom. The 300WSM is a great cartridge.
  12. Re: Accurate gun? The Weatherby Accumark or Fibermark series. They are actually component guns consisting of Creiterion or Kreiger barrels (same company-these barrels are cut rifled or button rifled, not hammer forged like Ruger or Remington) and Bell and Carlson or HS Precision aluminum bedding block stocks. the triggers are fully adjustable and are excellent. Any other gun that I have purchased, I have replaced the trigger with a timmney or rifle basix trigger. Not my Weatherby's. Yea, they cost 1600+ dollars BUT THEY ARE WORTH IT!
  13. Re: Why not an autoloader?? You guys are way to caught up in the function isssue [ QUOTE ] i dont like autoloaders or pumps the reason i dont like pumps dont like the style or looks for starters and there noise or all the ones ive ever handled are and for. Auto loaders always more room for era in function [/ QUOTE ] Remember, the United States Armed forces uses 98% Semi-full Auto Weapons. Since I carried one for over 6 years I can tell you that with proper maint. they are every bit as reliable as a bolt gun. I actually hunted in Montana with a guy that had a Weatherby Accumark 30-378 and it would not fire when he tried to shoot a mulie. He had not cleaned and oiled the bolt and water/rust had froze the spring into the cocked position. Ouch!!
  14. Re: Looking for a new scope ATN specializes in night vision. Depending on what your budget is, I would go Leupold first, Nikon second. The VariXIII series is great. I would opt for the Monarch Series is selecting a Nikon. 2.5x10 or 3x9 is the desired power for Deer Hunting. If you can afford it, I would opt for a 50mm objective instead of a 40mm. Gives you just a little more shooting light at dusk.
  15. Re: Why not an autoloader?? I will have to agree with you on what "hunting" accuracy means. My 742 woodsmaster would shoot 2" groups at 100. It would consistantly place 4 rounds in an 8" vital target at 200. More than enough for whitetail hunting up north. But my Browning short trak has an adjustable stock (comes with shims) so that you can adjust it for your fit. It shoulders so quick and sweet. I just love it as a stalking rifle. Shoots 350 yards all day long.
  16. Re: Why not an autoloader?? I have killed two Monster Mulies in Montana with my Browning short trac in 300 WSM. The rifle shoots like a dream. I have owned Rem 742, and 7400. They are not as accurate as a Browning semi. I can shoot 2.5" groups all day long at 200 yds with mine.
  17. Re: Getting a glock, now I can\'t decide on model. If your dead set on the 9mm, then the model 19 would be a hands down winner.
  18. Re: The Bullet in the Pipe... Guys, it really should not matter. If the cartridge has recieved the proper amount of roll crimp then it should hold time and time again (the cartridge actually headspaces on the case mouth). I could see this happening with some handloads as the brass could recieve to much of a bell and then crimped too light against the bullet. I carry Corbon loads in my Glock33, you would never have to worry about that with a pemium factory load like this.
  19. Re: New Black Rifle Owner I own several AR-15's and I'm also a FFL holder. Realtree members get a discount. PM my if anyone is interested in a "black rifle". After "Dumbo" made his comments, I want everyone to own one!
  20. Re: Ordering my AK Great choice! I have several AR-15's, but the AK is truley a combat worthy weapon. Probably the best home defense system there is. In the Military when we had to resort to a pistol......it was panic time. We learned to shoot and strip an AK in a hurry. Take your pistol.....kill a commie and take his weapon.

  25. Re: Springfield GI .45 1911 I catagorize the 1911 45: High end: Wilson Combat, Ed Brown Medium: Colt, Springfield, Smith Low end: Lamma I own a Wilson Combat CQB, Smith 1911PD, 2 Springfield Armory loaded models. One had been tricked out with a Nowak barrel and bushing. The Springfield is by far the best value for the buck. The reviews in guntest magazine have always been the "pick"
