    Pine Wood Derby

Tomorrow is race day once again! This will be my sons last pine wood derby (till he has a son anyway). He wanted a hunting truck this year and this is what we came up with. The pinewood derby has been great over the years. He took 2nd four years ago with the Eagle car. The next year we made Bob and just like in the movie he moved rather slow. Last year the batmobile was the fastest car on the track. Wish us luck!
  4. Yes - do it, the fees are nothing compared to the savings over the long haul. Only way I'd say no is if you planned to sell in the next couple years. Can't see rates going much lower. My guess is they will go up in March when people start wanting to move as the weather gets nice.
  5. Thanks everyone! Had some freshly ground deer spaghetti for lunch today.
  6. Just like last year I harvested a doe on the morning of my birthday. However, this year today was the last day of the 2011 IL season. This is also the 41st deer I've harvested in my 41 years on this earth. It was a great way to start the day. This is the first snow we've had this winter and I love hunting in the snow. Saw about a dozen deer this morning! 20 degrees and very calm. It's all going to melt tomorrow as the high will be 55, but at least I got a snow hunt in this season. The Lord has been good to me this year. I filled 4 of my 6 tags - 2 does and 2 bucks. I'd say the truck I bought last March has been broken in.
  7. Wouldn't that be Mrs. Jordan? (if there is a Mrs. Jordan that is)

    new bowtech

No bow is worth a grand in my opinion, but I'll likely be shelling out that much in the next year when I retire my 2003 Bear TRX. When I do I'll compare and try out the leading contenders and buy the one that feels the best. Bow hunting is high on my priority list (after God and my kids). I'm Taking the kids to Disney in March, which will relieve the guilt associated with a 1000.00 bow. LOL
  10. Congratulations and good luck with taxi school! That is a magnificent buck - for anywhere except Ohio (LOL). You know... since Ohio is now listed as the top destination for outfitters and people that lease land in Illinois on the farms I used to hunt. 170 inchers around every tree from what I hear.
  11. Way I see it Michael is a good dad and does more for hunting than most. Just from the videos one can see he takes his son Mason hunting a lot. Sure - there is a lot more to being a dad than taking your kids hunting, but it sure is a good start. As far as his marriage / divorce I don't know enough about it to say anything and unless someone on here knows Michael personally and has spoken with him about it why make a comment at all???? As far as the wolf thing, pretty ridiculous even bringing it up in the first place. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I found on the internet shooting a wolf with a radio collar on is legal. Now if the issue is with "shooting a wolf" and not "legally shooting a wolf" then one would be posting in the wrong place. Gotta be tough being a big time celebrity with so many haters out there. Michael, if you ever happen upon this I'm in your corner brother! May God bless you with a long life and a long list of mature bucks, wolfs, and any other critter you pursue.
  12. I keep mine pretty simple. Sweat chopped yellow or red onion in olive oil Brown 2 pounds ground deer meat Place in pot with... 1 chili brick 4 serrano peppers - diced 2 cans chili beans 2 cans stewed or diced tomato 1 can tomato sauce 1 cup of water 1 tablespoon cummin 2 tablespoon chili powder (has cayenne pepper among other things) 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 tablespoons black pepper -bring to boil then simmer for 30 minutes I suppose most of you know about the scoville heat index, but if not it's here. I like to use it when shopping for peppers because the peppers I add depends on who's eating. I find the serrano to be enough to make it burn once, but not twice (LOL). 13. 1. Doing stuff with my kids: laser tag, bowling, movies, swimming, visiting National Parks, and Disney World / Universal Studios this March! 2. Hunting / Fishing (wish I had a trout stream near me for fly fishing) 3. Rock climbing 4. Playing the bagpipes 5. Simple taxidermy stuff / Texas mounts and turkey fans
  14. Put all my Christmas decorations up (including the tree) during fall break November 21-25 (I'm a teacher). I took everything down (including the tree) on December 26th.

  16. Late with this, but I purposfully wrap terrible. I could do better, but then everyone wouldn't know it was from me. No tag required. I practice each year to make my wrapping as screwed up as i can get it. It also prevents any paper waste. Just tape that scrap on.
  17. I have Leupold Ultra slam on my 300 ultra mag, Nikon buckmasters on my Remington Black powder, and a Cabela's Alpha series on my sons Traditions Black Powder. All three are great scopes and can't say I prefer one over the other. The Alpha series is on sale right now at Cabela's. Cabela's Alpha Series Riflescope, Riflescopes, Optics, Hunting : Cabela's
  18. Merry Christmas Mike! (Sorry, I missed it). I got the 2011 World Series DVD's from my kids. Well, they didn't know that they had got it for me, but that's what the card said (LOL). Pretty cool because I took them to game 6 in St. Louis. Best game ever! I may screw up as a father, but I'll always be able to pull that one out as a get out of jail free card.
  19. I guess it was October or November 2003. I was hunting about 40 acres (35 - in beans and a 5 acre woodline running next to a creek). I no longer hunt there. I had been bow hunting off and on since 1988 but had yet to harvest a deer with my bow. In 2003 I decided to get serious and bought the bow I still use today. The old Bear TRX (some of you may remember that bow from Monsterbucks 10). I saw this buck the night before and couldn't get a shot. The next day I set up a little differently and was able to get a shot off. As I recall my sights had come loose or I had bumped then or something, anyway the shot was way off! Hit him right under the jaw in the neck. He ran off about 40 yards and stopped to work the arrow out of his neck. He was not able to get it out and after a minute walked off. I waited about 30 minutes and got down to look for him. He was only another 50 yards dead near the creek. His right antler had grown real strange and he weighed over 200 pounds. I figure he was a 4.5 year old, but at the time didn't know much about aging, maturity, or even 10% of what I know now about bow hunting today. It got me hooked though and I've been fortunate enough to harvest a deer with my bow every year since 2003 with the exception of the 2005 season when I was super busy working on my PhD and didn't get to hunt much.
  20. Anyone that believes Obama must be crazy! "2603-1/8 by B&C" - no way that goes over 2600!
  21. I checked and we are in 2nd to last place! Ruth (turkeygirl) has a nine point, and I believe several does still need to go in. Not that it really matters (LOL). I'm done for the year and would like to say thanks to all on our team for playing. Each year I have a lot of fun with these contests and this year was no different. Happy Holiday's to all on team 4! A question

Will, it seems that tallone's friend is painting them as opposed to dipping. I assume each skull would be unique? I wouldn't think many people would send skulls in the mail for him to paint, but perhaps some local RT members might be interested. I have posted pictures of the work my taxidermist does in the taxi room and provide contact info for anyone interested.
  23. Being from IL seeing a bear in the wild was a first for me on my DIY Idaho bear hunt in the spring of 2010. He walked to within 30 yards of my blind and was looking in at me. I was reading as it was early and I did not expect a bear for another 2 hours. My heart was pumping as if a 180 inch whitetail was below me. Apparently the bear in the video wasn't a shooter. No way could I have waited as long as the camera man did to alert the bear to my presence. I would have been telling him to get as soon as he was at the bottom of the ladder.
